Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

Hi,

A few questions:

-What differences are there?

-Is it just that the FW will take longer to be released?

-Can I not change the product code like I did on my n96?

-Will this void my warranty?

Thanks

1. Maybe a logo printed on the phone, possible different firmware.

2. Dont see why you couldn't change the code?

3. Pretty sure messing around with product codes voids the warranty as is with any phone. I beleive Nokia can track this even if you change it back to the original.

People informed me that if i went to vodafone to get it, it would be branded, and that if I went to carphone warehouse, it would be unbranded. See below:-

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

Also, how can I tell if a phone is branded, apart from any printed logos on the phone itself? if I go into a store and see look at an n900 and it doesn't have 'vodafone' printed somehwere on it, does that definately mean its unbranded?

I've never heard about branded N900's...
I don't think that there are any.
In the end it's Linux...

If you go into the store as to test your simcard maybe? Chances are you will get one a lot cheaper from Amazon than in store if that option is a possibility for you.

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

There are branded Vodafone UK n900s. They have Vodafone 360 preinstalled, a different firmware number from the UK unbranded ones, and there was some question about whether skype had been quietly disabled (You'd need to ask someone who has one about that to be sure). I would also assume they have the voda-logo somewhere on the casing.

My understanding is that the recent firmware upgrade was a few days late for the voda ones, but that, encouragingly, it did arrive. Which is a vaste improvement on previous arrangements where some upgrades have been completely blocked by carriers. Again, you'd need to check with a Voda-owner to be certain.

You can certainly flash with unbranded firmware if you have branded. The jury is currently out on what that would do to your warranty, since you'd be using the tools provided by nokia for doing it. We have yet to have a test case. ;)

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

Thanks. I think I can get my upgrade a bit earlier if I get in through vodafone, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. I'll call them on my tea-break and see.

Has anyone got any pictures/videos of these Vodafone-branded N900s? I'd be interested to see how off-putting the logo is, and see what the 360 software is.

I have a vodafone N900, They are NOT branded what so ever and skype works too over 3G and wifi. there is no branding on the phone what so ever the only difference is the product code ends 205 and not 203 (203 is uk 205 is uk Voda) this means that Voda know its theres basically. How ever when they first came out we could not update our phones due to the fact when u tried to update our product codes where not looked at by nokia but nokia and voda solved this problem within a few days. So now i just get everything as normal like you guys do. So just to confirm there is no Vodafone 360 (not sure who made that one up) there is no logo (not even when u turn the phone on) no voda software not even a shortcut in sight to your voicemail etc. Nokia would not allow it. Skype works fine and everything is 100% the same appart from the product code ( that you can change if you want using the flasher) but you again noting by changing it.

Jay (very happy vodafone supplied customer with phone direct from voda)

P.S voda will do the N900 for £30 a month with unlimited text, data, landline and voda to voda calls and 750 cross network mins ;-) if you push them hard enough + free insurance and vodafone passport hehehe

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

well im hoping that nokia have just stored that code now and we get the updates direct from nokia as voda dont need to touch the firmware on these as no branding can be done

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

Wrong,

Vodafone N900 Product Code is 0595421
Unbranded UK Variant is 0593611

Would need to diff the packages 203 vs 205 to see the differences

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

it still remains that there is no difference in the software or the hardware on these handsets, i have but them side by side and there is no difference. the firmware is the same it seems that only the updates where a few days later

My code ends in 421, only got the device yesterday and I cant add an internet connection other than wlan, and can only edit the name of the contract wap, so cant add contract internet..... could this be the reason?

Cheers

Im with voda and my code ends with 203.
No logos, Nothing that would point to that this device is vodaphone ( Even the network text ive changed . )

Then again, I did get the phone through CPW not vodafone directly.

Im really annoyed at this, I went for the 900 as an exhange from the HTC HD2 due to firmware upgrade issues, seems that vodafone are still messing with this phone too.....

Just to be clear, what version of firmware is your n900 running? Is there any branding/vodafone logo's on your device? What makes you think your connection issues are at all related to any possible branding?

My product code ends in 421, and the firmware was updated yesterday via the vodafone site, which in turn put me to the nokia update site.
So the firmware has been updated to the latest, but somehow (via the product code i expect) setting up contract internet is not available...

although there are no visible signs of branding, as with the HD2, the serial/code numbers are logged with the manufacturer as to prevent certain applications and or services running......

you need your provider to send you proper settings. Ask them how to do it. Has nothing to do with firmware afaik. My provider insisted of sending me wap settings instead of intenet, but I modified them myself to get them to work properly after looking up the problem on teh interwebs. (This is saunalahti in finland tho, so voda might do things different)

I meant to ask a few more details about this. This seems like a very good deal. How long is your contract? Were you upgrading? If so how long have you been a vodafone customer? What did you do/say to get them to offer such a good deal. Vodafone are callin me in a couple of days to upgrade and I want to get the best deal possible!

Thanks

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

its a 24 month contract, i was upgrading i have been with vodafone 5+ years and have two contracts with them (mine and mr MRS) i basically said to them £40 is way to much + spoke to the business department. if you push voda hard enough they will budge on there plans.

Also there is no restrictions in software etc and if you really are fussed you can reflash the phone. But at the moment there is no difference between the voda supplied handsets and nokia direct.

Re: Difference in unbranded and branded n900's

In terms of settings, on 3
a) the basics just seemed to work anyway
b) After a few minutes I had a text message from the network which carried network settings. This wasn't requested it was automatic (presumably network detected a new device being used with that SIM)

All very easy and painless.

On data note that voda T&Cs seem to exclude voip explicity, but since they're shipping devices with this as a standard feature I think they;d struggle to enforce? (I don't think they do anyway?)

Would be interested to find this out. Would mainly use VOIP in my house over wi-fi anyway tho.
