Re: Im Just Confused i have a few questions sorry im a noob
A better title would get you a better response ;)
This has and will be asked 100s of times. If you are the type to get that concerned, then the N900 may not be the device for you. Had mine since start of December and love it. Had a few hitches after the latest PR1.1 release, but re-flashing the device sorted that. The reflash was easy to do and the back up restored my phone perfectly. There are some rough edges but the browsing experience alone is enough to make up for those IMHO. I wanted a phone, with keyboard, good camera, memory card slot, decent operating system (not MS!), WIFI, GPS and VOIP. After doing a lot or research the N900 was the only choice for me. If I had waited 6 months then maybe a different decision, but you can wait forever if that is the case :( As for android vs Maemo, there are plenty of reviews so read them! It's horses for courses as far as I am concerened. All the current crop of smart phones have thier plus and minus point. It's a case of matching them with your requirments. |
Re: Im Just Confused i have a few questions sorry im a noob
The problems... are rather concentrated on this site because this is a group of tinkerers that have dived rather deep into the phone and operating system. Casual users - I know a few of them with the N900 - have had no problems really and are enjoying the phone.
Biggest problem you'll run into were the early adopters that installed applications and it filled up areas of the filesystem before the updates were applied. Now... I would recommend doing more research first. It's not a perfect platform, there is a possibility (it's unknown at the moment) that Maemo 6 will not be an update for the N900. Do more research, ask more questions... and good luck. |

Re: Im Just Confused i have a few questions sorry im a noob
I love the n900 and wouldn't change it for any other phone... but
I don't think it's completely stable, there's still a few little bugs in it, probably no worse than any other phone though! I haven't used the new versions of Andriod but personally I don't think you can go wrong with the open nature of Maemo... |

Re: Im Just Confused i have a few questions sorry im a noob
if i was head honcho at nokia i would stop selling the n900 cos it is just too damn good,
id keep every single one of them all for myself! i vowed never to buy a nokia product again after the last 7 months of owning a n97, but im so glad i changed my mind! personally the only good thing about android is the cool name (android) the phone and os looks pretty crap to me, but ive never tried one so take no notice of my opinions, this is just how i made my decision. until a uk network starts offering them on ontract and we all get to play with a nexusone, no one can really say if there good or bad, but i am so relieved that i chose n900 and it still makes me say 'wow' every morning |

Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
The n900 changed my mind for me. I was NEVER going to buy another Nokia phone after my horrible experience with my N97. The N900 is what the N97 was promised to be. With all the apps in extras, testing, and devs, I can see where the device is going and I like what I see. Just make sure you know what your needs are and do the research.
Oh and the thrill alone of going to an AT&T store and at least 10 people(including iphone users) ask to check out your phone is always a plus! |

That said, the Droid was a little more feature rich than the 900...not sure if it will change, however as far as browsing, built-in Skype/SIP calling, what I think is a better calendar, and connectivity platform, I prefer the 900. In a nutshell, the 900 does all the basics well, and does them "basically" (i.e. no frills). Android is not without its issues however...native email client is still having problems from what I can tell (e.g. messages not delivered, duplicates, etc). One thing Android has going obviously, is its widespread acceptance, and more 3rd party software support. But again, I'd rather have a phone I can take to Europe, gets better reception, and has TV-Out vs a few more apps that I may/may not use. |
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
Get the N900 I have had no problems at all, had the wifi freeze once but other than that I probably haven't restarted the phone more than once every couple of weeks which for something as complicated as this shows that it is very stable. I have had the browser get upset twice I think but it tends to close itself down and works when you open it again. Downloading free software couldn't be easier and over the air updates are fantastic. Haven't had to plug it into a computer yet apart from to move over some Divx and MP3.

Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
The tv-out feature was part of my buying decision.
I had looked at Android phones but the above point swayed me as well as Google "knows everything about you". iPhone has more entertaining apps(?) but I think the n900 is more practical and more useful. I used the n900 to write this post and still a joy to use. Oh the iPhone is overseen by a "dictatorship" and MS Windows mobile is seriously out-dated. |
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
As a phone its working well for me, except when I confuse myself by forgetting that I have my Bluetooth headset turned on and trying to answer it normally. The Skype integration is very well done.
For everything else, it has worked well given the amount of alpha (extras-devel) and beta (extras-testing) software I've put on it. |

I don't think it's as unstable as some of the posts here might lead you to believe but I don't think it's as stable as some of its competitors either. Maemo 6 will offer something more or different than Maemo 5 but the question is, again, do you need Maemo 6's capabilities or can you do what you want to do in Maemo 5 or another OS. Plus, Maemo 6 will introduce its own problems when it is first released. Android is not better than Maemo nor is Maemo better than Android, they are meant for different audiences. Maemo has fewer apps but they are generally free and open source software. Android has more apps but not all are free or open. If that matters to you it would be an argument for Maemo and if it doesn't an argument for Android. As far as capabilities, the Android OS has more money behind it and more developers, especially commercial developers, writing for it. OTOH Maemo is easier to root and imposes less overhead on the CPU so it has the potential to run apps faster. If you do decide on Android, I would look for a phone with a 2.x version available. |
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
Don't buy it yet, well maybe you could buy it on 2010-Q2+ hopefully full functionality.
Also don't buy it because there are many things unfinished, bugs, no video call, call recording etc. Of course there is a high potential on this, still, nice mini-laptop. but it is matter of time to take advantage of each part of its circuit. Regards. |
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
I just bought a Nokia 5800 xpress music for my girl and guess?
and talking about functionality it works better than a n900. I dont care about linux, super pro processor, super big RAM, virtual ram, etc. People just need things working at 100% and 5800 does :) |
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
If you can, and don't have a reason to get the N900, wait for the next version of maemo 6.
|
Re: Tentative N900 buyer with some concerns
1st release of maemo 6 will be the same tale as of maemo 5 1st release. Don't you think?
better wait an stable release of maemo5, maybe PR1.2 or PR2.0^^ |
