Ovi Store sells DRM-protected audio files that N900 can't even play

How nice. The Ovi Store for the N900 offers me so.called "Podcasts" (which, I assume, are just audio books) in a price range from €0,90 to €7,--

They are all in German, so I assume this is a local thing that affects only people in Germany/Austria/Switzerland.

I tried the cheapest, assuming it would be the same thing as with paid applications... you can pay if you're nice, but you could also get them for free if you wanted. I chose to pay.

This time, it's the other way round: You pay, but can't play. What you get is a file with the file extension '*.dm", so I assume it's digitally restricted. Of course, my N900 doesn't know what to do with it and can't play it.

I'm very pleased that Nokia chose to offer me these files even though they know they don't work on the N900.

Can't they get anything right with Ovi?

On its own this would just be funny, but the lack of attention to detail is stunning sometimes. It's also weird how new Symbian phones often get new bugs in existing functionality. What do they do, rewrite everything every time?

The cheapest is a two chapter demo for free. You didn't have to pay to realize that they don't work. :P

I'm not gonna fight the windmills for 90 cents. Also, as Ovi is such a hostile environment and so keen on scaring customers away, I don't feel the urge to help them get better through channels other than the "report issue"-button. There's no "Ovi community" I feel part of, you see...

My intention is to warn other potential victims here.

Oh, OVI certainly is the future. Just not Nokia's ...

It'd be kinda cool if someone with a wellvisited blog or similar would try to purchase one of these drm encumbered files to discover they don't work.

Not just to expose Nokia/Ovi snafu, but also to highlight the evils of drm.

Supposedly a completely new, built-from-scratch, Ovi Store is supposed to be launched this year, probably along with Symbian^3 and 4 devices; and Maemo 6 is supposed to be DRM compatible.

Speaking purely as an end user, patience wears thin... Nokia better steps up in their act this year.

Isn't it the content provider / developer who chooses the devices on which the app/item/whatever shows up?
I mean, Ovi is a mess yes, but it's the developer who makes the mistake in the first place by choosing N900 as a compatible device.
Of course Nokia could start doing what Apple does and check everything, but personally I would kind of hate it.

Just to let you know:

Nokia reacted to the complaint i filed via "report issue": They added two more DRM-protected files. You can now buy a €14,99 audio book from the store that will not play. Get it while it's hot!

There are sitting Nokia employes at OVI that sold rubber boots the past 20 years, am I right?

NOKIA: What about in-service training?

This is exactly the reason why I've never bought DRM'd material & will continue in that manner.

They're selling videos for sending as MMS now. :)

I'm afraid I reported it with a rather sacrastic ticking off suggesting they get an n900 and try stuff before selling it. ;)

Re: Ovi Store sells DRM-protected audio files that N900 can't even play

Maybe it comes with an MMS plugin for the N900? :p

RevdKathy 2010-02-03 19:54

Re: Ovi Store sells DRM-protected audio files that N900 can't even play

How does Ovi store do its star ratings? Because the MMS video has 8 reviews - every single one of which is critical - and three gold stars.

Now, since it's not usable via mms on n900, I think it's a safe bet that those stars are not from n900 customers. So are we being fobbed with ratings from symbian users?

Re: Ovi Store sells DRM-protected audio files that N900 can't even play

As far as I noticed, ovi store items that are available on more than 1 platform share the same comments/ratings between all of the platforms. But I could be wrong.
