Have a good bluetooth keyboard? Share!

Hey guys,

My N900 is the 3rd device I want a bluetooth keyboard for, after my PS3 and HTPC.

I have been shopping for awhile but all the bluetooth keyboards I find are either:

1) overpriced
2) built as cheaply as possible
3) for mac

The last (pricey) wireless keyboard I had never worked because the batteries could bounce around inside the battery compartment. I was constantly stuffing in tin foil and cotton to make a good connection.

This one: http://tinyurl.com/ydjr5s4 has a good price and I have held it in the store and it feels solid. But it looks fruity... yuck.

So the question is: Has anyone found a nice bluetooth keyboard at the same price point (~$50), with solid build quality?

Also it would be great if it was built by a company I have heard of, but that might be wishful thinking.

Stowaway Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard was great with my N95 8gb. Not sure how well it plays with Maemo though.

edit - or are you just looking for a full-size (non-portable) one?

I use this one with my HTPC: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/104608

Works fabulously. They do a Bluetooth version as well but I couldn't comment on how well that functions.

I'm pretty happy with the iGo/Thinkoutside Stowaway Sierra. But they stopped making them, so they're very very hard to find by now.

I've only used it with my N800, where it worked flawlessly. At some point I want to use it with my N900 too, but I'll wait until the current missing support problem is fully sorted out.

The build quality of the keyboard could have been better, the screws are threaded into plastic and some of them tend to break loose. But nothing disastrous.

I used the stowaway sierra with my handspring visor prob 10 years ago. It worked well.

I should specify that now I am looking for a non-portable, desktop keyboard that uses bluetooth for my living room. Logitech makes many but I'm not looking to spend $180 on a keyboard.

@BillyTheFish, I didnt see the bluetooth version of the 2.4ghz you suggested. Do you have a link?

I have a Logitech Dinovo Mini, it is a really good bluetooth keyboard in my opinion. I purchased it because it was easy to connect to my pc and my ps3, and hopefully maybe one day it will connect to my n900.

its a bit pricey, but sometimes you can get it for a good deal on sale.

the ThinkOutside / iGo foldable aluminum has been very reliable for me across many devices during the last 6 or so years... until the N900 (for now)

besides - I loved my iGo Stowaway.

Are you planning on using it with your N900? I haven't set mine up yet (are there even drivers?) but it could be useful for touch-typing and when hooking up to a larger screen...

I'm afraid that BT Keyboards are not currently / officially supported with the N900. I know what you are going to say, 'why not'?

Well it hasn't been deemed essential by Nokia as yet but some guys have managed to get some success although not always 100% of the time.

We are trying to do something about it by registering our support for what we see as a bug. You can read more about it here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ight=bluetooth

Please register and vote with the instructions that Oli has provided as well. The more people request this then the more chance that something will be done about it.

The Apple wireless keyboard works well for me and I use it on Windows. I haven't tried it on the N900 and only paired it with the PS3 once IIRC.

I'm interested in hearing about a nice foldable Bluetooth keyboard working with the N900 too, seemed like the Stowaways are all out of production and can go for a fair bit on eBay?

Took this picture a few days after getting the N900. They were long and excruciating, lots of hair pulling trying, and then...

Took this picture today. I sold the E90 because it made little to no economic sense to keep it. While sitting at my desk and checking this community for the latest news on getting the BT keyboard to work with the N900, an old friend's faint voice (UK accent) greeted me from one of the drawers. Quickly I took the batteries out of a flashlight and...

Excellent Billy! The guys on the other thread are actually trying to figure out a solution in the meantime so subscribe to that thread as well if you want to keep up to date.

I still like my little Irxon minikeyboard ... it works with my pair of 770 tablets just beautifully.

Are you saying you have it successfully working with the N900?
I have had that keyboard for years with my ol' Treo 700p, and just picked up the N900 last week. I have been trying to get that keyboard to work with no luck. It pairs fine, but I don't seem to get any actual interaction. If you have it working, could you point how how you set it up?
Thanks!

Does anyone have this keyboard by any chance? The description says it's SPP, but one of the comments describes it as a HID keyboard (and working fine with a SmartQ 7), so I'm wondering what it really supports.

I think (looks same) I have the same one bought from TigerDirect few months ago. After I type the pairing key on the keyboard, the phone indicates it has paired but nothing shows up when I type. Did you have to do anything special other than pair with n900?

Re: Have a good bluetooth keyboard? Share!

No. There's nothing special you have to do. So long as the phone supports a standard bluetooth keyboard link, it's fine. The only reason it might not support the keyboard is if it doesn't have the right drivers to translate the input. But if it paired, it means it accepted the keyboard. The trick after that is to ensure your phone is setup to receive and interpret the data from it. The keyboard itself uses standard bluetooth keyboard protocols, so any device that supports bluetooth keyboards will accept it.
