n900 web browser is too slow

hi there

i dont know what the problem here is.

but this happened only recently, my web browser is soooooo slow, through wifi and hsdpa, it took 6 minutes to load google. i turned the phone off and on and it worked a bit better but still slow, cleared cache and everything. the cache size is 40mb.

shall i reflash the device? or is there an app that is affecting it?

kind regards

Six minutes to load Google is absolutely not normal. I have never seen that. I did improve my browser performance a little by changing the DNS servers for my connections to Google's DNS servers. Seemed to help lookup performance just a bit. YMMV

Cant say ive ever had this issue, what area are you in? What applications do you have on your phone. Google loads in less than 1-2 seconds for me with 3.5 g, and less than 10 seconds on Edge..... I think you may have a software issue

Where did you go to change your DNS options for the web browser?

It's not for the browser itself, its for a connection.

Settings -> Internet Connections -> Connections -> *connection you want to modify* -> Edit -> Next -> Next -> Advanced -> IP Addresses

Deselect "Auto-retrieve DNS" and set your addresses manually. Google's is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Keep in mind that there are other free DNS services as well that may perform even better than Google's for you. Or your existing servers may perform better. Or you may see no difference.

Today I installed the mozilla firefox and mozilla runtime updates. I must say that, even if it's still slow, firefox browser has improved a lot. It loads faster and never crashes. Anyway the default browser is still better.. ;D

Have you tried to delete browser history first. There is a known bug there.

I found the connection can be a bit slow when I have a confirmed but weak signal or when I have loads of stuff open on the dashboard.

I just timed making a connection to WLAN at home and connecting to google news and total time was 15 secs at 2,5g

Re: n900 web browser is too slow

My web browser has sometimes been slow no matter what connection I use, and was wondering but just thought that's how it is sometimes and stayed content on it working after the first page loaded up. Now that I cleared my history and set up more space for the browser to use, it sped up a lot. So I guess I'll just clear history more often.
Thanks for the tip!

I would guess this is dns related. Switching to google's dns servers helped me, but then the settings don't always seem to be applied. I ended up just sticking it straight into resolv.conf.

thether it to your pc and surf on your pc and see if it's slow also. If it is then you know it's dns server or connection or both. If it's not then you know it's software related on your phone.

The other thing i noticed is that after downloading the 2g/3g status bar app and opening it and choosing 3g instead of dual or 2g I stopped seeing t-mobile automatically switch me over to 1 bar of edge making everything slow to almost not opening.

I think if you let your carrier drop you down to the slowest speed during peak hours they will do it but if you force it to stay on 3g it bypasses that.

I personally would not recommend OpenDNS, it does far too much fiddling rather than just plain DNS lookups. I have often had issues with it claiming sites are not available when in fact they are.
