[Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

The N900 touchscreen is great. But it's annoying to swipe about 20 times in long websites to reach the top of a page. We need a good solution for this issue! :)

Vote here: Brainstorm

I've added my first 2 Ideas for possible solutions:

The first is a fast workaround with only 2 Buttons.

Quote:

When we swipe from the left to the right in the screen, then we've got a Button to toogle the mouse coursor. We can put there 2 Buttons more to scroll direct to the top or the bottom of a webpage.

This is not a solution to reach a certain point. But the most often use case is to reach the top of the page (the menu). This workaround would help a lot.

The second needs a little cange in the UI system. But in my opionion the effort is small when you compare what we could get. A big scrollbar on the right that appears when we need it, and disappears when we want to enjoy our display. :)

Quote:

Look at the animation when you swipe from the right in the screen. The Websitehistory scrolls from the left in the screen. It's more logical to change here the user interface. We should swipe from the left to the screen to get the history.

Then we can get the coursor toggle Button when we swipe from the right to the screen. There is enought space for a big and fast scrollbar. Please Vote!

I like both gestures. What does the arrow do?

It's just the arrow we've got at the moment when we swipe from the left to the screen. We can use it at example to mark text instead of moving the screen around. :)

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

I vote for both too. The arrow is like a mouse cursor. You can for example paint text with it.

Arrow gesture is too picky after all. You should get it visible by sliding from any part of left edge. Adding "home" and "end" -buttons shouldn't be a problem.

How about swipe to get the "backward and forthward" button. I don't care about the scroll up and down button...i don't have a problem with the default scrolling at all!

i too would really like this it takes forever to scroll up long sites

btw that side mouse can also be put into manipulation mode by clicking it again making a red cross appear for selecting text. but i also worked out today that mode is really useful for moving round the map on google maps or flashearth.com!

So... If you like it, please vote vor it.

Only 2 Votes (one from me) for the Brainstorm and so may "yes I want it" here at talk in such a short time?

Please, go to the Brainstorm site, login and vote for the Brainstorm. And in some Days again for your preferred solution. :)

If you can't login, you have to create a Account for Brainstorm!
You can't use your account from maemo talk. Currently you need a seperate account.

But, I guess, thats not the problem. You get with this simple second accound a voice at Brainstorm!
Here at this talk thread, no Nokia employee will hear your voice. With luck, they read it. ;) But what perhaps could count in the future (when want to select a solution) are the votes. :D

Okay, the selection is not only taken by the count of the votes. Thats only a number. But, they have a look at it! :)

No wonder why there aren't any votes, it should not be this hard to use a forum.:mad:

By the way, the cursor icon on the right is useless.

Same function (scroll bar from right side) should be also added to contacts.

It's simple: The Brainstorm part is not a part of the forum. But they're working on it. :)

Hmm... could you explain why?

When it doesn't appear from the left, we need it from the right. In my understanding it is very usefull. (mark text at expample)

The quick flick should be proportional to page length. A slow flick should move a consistent amount regardless of page length.

Simple as it is. :)

The finetuning could be hard to do. But this should work in the whole UI.

The only thing I worry about is that the user can't get a feeling how fast a quick flick will scroll.

But, you're right. It could help. :)
Would you add it as a solution, please?

I use a lot of long websites. At example: I got here 40 Posts per Page. (so I can see more at the same time without reloading) - But srolling back to the Menu is sometimes really hard.

There is a plugin for Firefox mobile for speed scrolling. It wouldn't work in microb since it is activated by a button on one of the side panes, but it might be worth having a look at it...

It doesn't always appear from the left? It should...

In the case Solution #2 is elected. :)

I like solution 2 as well. It will be much more precise, and you have a general idea of where you are scrolling too; just like on a desktop.

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

in my opinion solution1 is useless if solution2 is present. The cursor button is really useful especially when accompanied by a status bar that reveals the objects (links) under the cursor.

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

When the page is long, any page not necessary in Web Browser, I miss the old traditional way to scroll before everyone crying for kinetic scroll.
In Windows Mobile or SybmainV5, the scroll bar works very well for long page. Can't we have both kinetic scroll and scroll bar?

By the way, why there are two solutions, but only one vote?

In the beginning of a Brainstorm you have to Vote for the Brainstorm itself. In this Time you can Add more and more possible Solutions. After a while a Brainstrom migrate to the next state.

Then you can Vote for your prefered Solution. :)

Hi,

great idea, I just voted,

one question : why not to consider a third choice, swipe from the left, and the scroll bar appears in the right ?

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

This missing feature is very annoying for me especially on this website. I voted for the first solution, but I wish there was a more elegant solution...

Yes, this is correct. But it's very similar to the Solution #2. Should we really add a alternative solution or add the posibility to Solution #2 and let the people at Nokia decide?

Just Vote for the second Solution if you want a more elegant possibility! :D

I've got not a better Idea without adding more buttons somewhere to the device. :(

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

I was thinking the other day how we could turn the scrolling of a set length page into a race. I use both thumbs that run up the page.

I would like to suggest a solution that is proportional to the speed and length of the movement on the screen. Anyone used Opera on S60v5?

Helmuth 2010-02-12 10:31

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

Solution #3 added by Peter Oliver.

This solution would only work on keyboards with seperate [up] and [down] keys. On the most european versions this is only with [shift]+[left] or [shift]+[right] possible to emulate [home] and [end] buttons.
It works only on some devices. Don't forget, we have different Keyboard Layouts. I added a Comment to this Solution.

S***!

There are just too many development ideas. --> It is almost impossible to get everything work perfectly, just the way I'd want it to work in the near future. >_<

Or I'm just starting to feel like it. :(

I like your ideas Helmuth, hope they pass through, although there are some other plans for swipe from right in other brainstorms. This is just basicly a better idea than changing arrow to last page/keeping swipe as it is.

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

I would like the scroll to be like the scroll we have i thumbnail view in the image viewer.
A little swipe and it scrolls slowly, and a bigger swipe and it scrolls faster.
Tapping the screen stops the scroll.

The thumbnail view is a perfect example of how it should be.
The way it is now it has no kinetic energy.

Anyone wanna add kinetic scrolling as partial solution #4?

Hmm... it has kinetic scrolling. But without enought power. Correct.

So should I add a solution #4 to ajust the actual kinetic scrolling?

What about Post #12 from texrat. The kinetic scrolling should depend on the page lenght.

A good idea or not?

Tesno 2010-02-15 10:01

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

Behavior of the sensitivity should not be affected by web page. After all you don't exactly know the lenght of the page beforehand and your brain definitely assumes the same finger gesture to have same outcome.

Not. As we have no idea how long the page is before we start scrolling so it would be difficult to get used to something that would be so inconsistant.

When I am just moving around on a screen I tend to use small gestures. When I am reading threads I use long slow gestures. When I want to scroll long pages I want to be able to use long fast gestures. This is the feature that is missing.

I would also like to see the scroll bar down the right hand side of the screen but based on the little dot we see now. It could be displayed on the screen for a little longer and allow us to grab hold of it to scroll before disappearing.

I would also like the spacebar scrolling to be switched off as it can be really annoying when trying to type replies.

spoonbuddy 2010-02-15 12:14

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

Or, if easier, what about a four way arrow that you could switch on / slide in from the left, to appear in the middle of the screen. The further you move it away from the centre of the screen the faster it scrolls in the direction moved.

I'd still prefer a better implementation of kinetic scrolling.

Re: [Sandbox] MicroB WebBrowser: possibility to scroll fast in long websites

What about modifying the kinetic scrolling this way:

Scroll slow on the left side of the screen and fast (with even more kinetic power) on the right side of the screen?

Just a thought without judging. What do you think about this Idea?

Too complicated for me. Am I the only one who uses N900 with one (right) hand? :)

I have played a LOT of video games in my life though, my thumbs may be highly over-developed. :D

Spacebar issue is bugging me too. There should be much, much, MUCH more options to choose controls with always that "do nothing" -alternative.

in case of #2 cursor can stay on left and below the scrollbar two transparent arrows for back and forward

Why not use the accelerometer for webbrowsing on big websites.. Especially in portrait mode that would be awesome :)
