[Maemo 5] Open Source MfE / Activesync Implementation?
Hey everyone,
The last remaining issue I'm having is connecting to exchange. All of my other problems have been solved, and for me, the n900 is an (otherwise) perfect device. So, the purpose of this post is twofold: 1. If any Nokia reps are reading this, is there still an ongoing effort to fix outstanding exchange connectivity issues? 2. If not, is there any way to get access to the activesync source (even under NDA if necessary)? I'd be willing to solve the issues and assign all copyrights for the fix to Nokia. To everyone else, if Nokia is unwilling/unable to sort out the remaining issues and cannot release the code, is anyone else interested in working on a full exchange sync reimplementation with me? It would be a huge project but I know a lot of n900 users are dropping like flies because of this issue, and we need all we can get! |
Re: Activesync fixes
This:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...&highlight=mfe is the 'official' Mail For Exchange discussion thread. Vitaly Repin is from Nokia and working on ActiveSync (Mfe). And the source isn't availible. |
Re: Activesync fixes
Ya, I'm on that thread too, but there's too much traffic and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. :)
I'm specifically asking if 1) bug fixing is still ongoing and 2) if not, would anyone like to join me in reimplementing. I didn't really get any response in the other thread. *edit* I want to make clear that I fully understand that Nokia might not be able to implement things like lying to the exchange server about device capabilities (due to contracts with MS)... a cleanroom implementation may be required. I hope this isn't the case though. |
Re: Activesync fixes
I didn't get an answer too. He's probably buzy. Imho there's a lot to fix. I would love to see it open-sourced too.

Re: Activesync fixes
I fill a similar role at my company and I'm sure he's swamped as well. :)
I presume they're still working on it... but I'd like to know either way, because if there's no possibility of it (ever) working for me, I need to start working on a solution. |
Re: Activesync fixes
An open source solution would have benifits well beyond the n900.
If you are willing please go for it. |

Thanks mooninite! That looks very interesting...

Re: Activesync fixes
The main issue for me has been that I can not even sync with my server due to non-provisioning. Unclear if Nokia N900 will ever have provisioning. I am holding a $600 brick

Re: Activesync fixes
there is also zarafa
they have source, so maybe you can get some clues there too |
Re: Activesync fixes
Agreed on the non-provisioning issue. Most IT policies will not allow non-provisional devices. I hope this gets resolved...

Please keep this thread focused upon open source alternatives to Nokia's MfE implementation. Doing otherwise will make this thread redundant and cause it to be merged into Vitaly's thread. |
Re: [Maemo 5] Open Source MfE / Activesync Implementation?
Agreed. I never intended this thread to turn political; I was merely seeking interest and info regarding an alternate sync implementation.
As it turns out, sync does work for me. It was a user error (they changed the exchange server hostname at the same time I got my n900, by pure coincidence). So I'll probably focus my effort elsewhere for now. I would still be interested in an OSS exchange sync plugin for Maemo, especially if the official agent does implement real provisioning support (allowing remote wipe and enforced device locking), as I don't want others to have that level of control over my device. |

Quite shocking if you consider the price of the phone, claiming exchnage server support but not being able to connect to most of them due to non-provisioning. vote for the Provide "provisioning support" for Exchange bug https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8452 maybe someone can fix it |
