Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

Hey everyone,

i rebooted my N900 5 minutes ago and on the NOKIA logo screen there was written "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s" in the green font like when you have R&D enabled. The n900 shut down during the boot as i turned it back on again everything worked fine.

Do i have to worry about my phone or has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks

CrckMc

Re: System Malfunction Shutdown it 10s! WTF?

I've not seen that, no. I wouldn't worry about it unless it reoccurs though.

Re: System Malfunction Shutdown it 10s! WTF?

That seems to come from /sbin/preinit if /sbin/getbootstate returns "MALF" (well, any unexpected value really but that's the only one I can see with strings(1) that isn't handled). Beyond that, without source, your guess is as good as mine...

Re: System Malfunction Shutdown it 10s! WTF?

Just had this today.
Played a lot in extras-devel, played with the hosts file in \etc.

It seemed to be connected with the charging process...

Everyhting works fine anyway :)

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! And boot loop fix.

I had this problem the other day. I was getting angry with the fact i could no longer download any appplications due to having a full rootfs so i decided i was gonna try and clean it up manualy. i gained root *Woops* then did rm -f /usr/lib/* . seemed to have worked ok then i tryed to boot some applications they started to load but then disapeared. i then paniced thought opps why did i have to do that and restarted at this point i was faced with the dreaded
System Malfunction!
device shutdown in 10s!.

it would then reboot repeatedly until battary ran out.

SOLUTION!!!!!-!!!WOOT WOOT !!!

1.Find somebody with either the same phone n900 or the nokia x5800 or go buy an external charger to charge your battery for your phone.

i didnt belive these next 2 statements untill i tryed it.

Your n900 is unable to charge your battery in this state!!

You are unable to flash your phone with less then over half a battery!!!

2. Once you have charged your battery remove it and sit it on your side.

Prepare your computer for a re-flashing the n900.

3.You must install flasher 3.5. There are tutorials for installing this to windows linux and mac on this site.
3.1.Download and install the latest version of Flasher e.g.
maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2.exe

4.Download the firmware for your n900 save this in a memorable place.

Connecting your phone to computer.

5.With the battery still removed hook your computer up to the n900 using the usb data cable.

Running flasher "haha" 3.5

6. Run the flashing application on computer. Like i said befor i will post the exact details when i get home

This application will stop and say its waiting to find the device that you want to flash.

Back to the phone
7.now with your phone all ready plugged into the computer open the keyboard and hold the "u" button and insert the battery while holding the "u" button. keep holding the u button untill you can see a very faint usb sign in the top right of the screen. This will put the phone into flashing mode aka R&D mode.

Warning you can not enter R&D mode with little battery must be full or nearly full.

The computer should then recognize your n900 and start to do stuff wait for this to finish. on my computer it only took 1 minuet 30 seconds ruffley. but be patiant dont rush it dont stop half way through dont unplugg make sure it has completly stoped before unplugging.

reboot the n900 walla :p

You may find that your sim card is no longer recognised  do not panic this is just because you need to update your n900 :D. Do this by either connecting to wireless lan at your home and using the app manager update accross the internet or plugging the phone into the computer and using the nokia suite to update it over the internet. The latter i have not tested.

i hope this will help every one and could maybe become a basis for a flashing tutorial on this site. as i had to find all this infprmation all over the place.

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

i feel the wiki is to technical for an average joe user. you must spoon feed the average joe but not to much if you see what i mean. also alot of hints and tips from my experiance i think would help if they were added to that wiki. also my post isnt quite finished as i am still at work.

good work on the wiki tho just got to remember not every one is here from a technical background.

after reading more into that wiki i realise my tutorial isnt realy for just reflashing the n900 its more for fixing it from the system malfunction state. this isnt possible by just following the wiki as system malfunction stops you turning on and off your device and stops you charging your device this should be stated some were. i have also included areas that i got confused in while using that wiki. if you read my post u will notice there is information in there that isnt directly stated within the wiki.

sorry for the long post im not very good at english.

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

I just had this occur to me and I figure its because I ran the battery out this afternoon without a proper shutdown. This was like the previous shutdown's message. A full charge and a subsequent reboot fixed it issue for me.

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

I had this problem last week.
When you're running out of battery-life don't(!) reboot your phone, or else it'll say that it's malfunctioning.

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

Have this happening right now after dropping it (and I was planning on ordering an otterbox this week)

When turning it on it just gets to the Nokia screen and vibrates in a loop till the shutdown message appears.

Unfortunately I'm away for work and don't have my usb to micro cable with me. Will have to wait till I'm back home friday night.

I'm trying to flash it right now (on an XP machine) and once I hit enter at the cmd prompt it says

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

I had this green message one time. Restarted, and works normally (including subsequent restarts) from there on. The battery is always not less than 3/4. What could the reason be? I gain root sometimes, but I delete nothing, only install some packages and try out my strange theme for Hildon.

Hi,
Only replying as no one else has yet, but you may have to reflash the firmware.
I'm no expert, and have not done this myself, but it should leave the data on the external memory, ie /MyDocs untouched.
Just dont reflash the eMMC as well, as this WILL wipe /MyDocs.
This is assuming thats the only place where your important data is.
Regs,
Maruzko

I saw this too on the boot screen after forced reboot during web-browsing when its overclocked to 950.

It doesnt seem to harm the device in any way nevertheless

Re: "malfunction device shutdown in 10s" cause?

This and other problems such as loop rebooting as far as the nokia splash screen I have experienced trying to remove al deep os rooted software such as power kernel, kismet, extra codecs, etc... as a matter of preparing for online upgrade to pr1.3.
Leaving out battery for a couple of minutes and flashing modus got accepted.
The ful pr1.3 rootfs image got rid of the mess.

have you overclocked?

plus zillion other questions for background information that might reveal something useful.

Ok I got it :)

Code:

100% (185728 of 0 kB, avg. 185728 kB/s)
Finishing flashing... done
CMT flashed successfully

Well I charged the battery for more hours yesterday and connected the n900 with my PC. I started the CMD and run
Code:

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
No USB Device found, waiting......... now I inserted the battery into the mobile device, voila!

Re: Boot Message: "System Malfunction Shutdown in 10s"! What is this?

try it through an ubuntu live cd or usb stick, windows always does this.
you can try pulling the usb from the pc and trying a different port. I found one that always works, since then I've not had one error.

The latter i have not tested.

i hope this will help every one and could maybe become a basis for a flashing tutorial on this site. as i had to find all this infprmation all over the place.

is this safe please help me.

A live cd is a bootable cd/dvd with an operating system on the disk.
That means you can simply stuff the dvd/cd into you computer and boot Linux or windows from it without actually installing it.

Anyway, back ontopic: where did you get the idea to RM -RF /usr/lib?
