[Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

I spent this day compling Residual for N900. I wanted to see how would Grim Fandango run on my N900.

Here's a video and description:

You can download the binary and the source from

Do you have a video gameplay? Sounds great to play that on the N900.

What about "Brocken Sword"?

I know a number of people would be very excited to see that made into an installable package. In any case, i think this warrants its own thread.

This is brilliant. I just discovered residual the other day and was thinking of doing this myself. How does it run?

There's a debian folder in dists.

Re: [Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

Hmm, isn't the beginning of the game shown on the video just a FMV? And the real 3D starts after that?

Re: [Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

Tried gameplaying by fixing that small SDL bug.

Manny moves but is very, very slow. Loads got very high while playing. If you want to try it yourself, comment out residue\backends\platform\sdl\sdl.cpp line 477 SDL_WM_SetIcon and compile it. HW rendering would really improve gameplay.

Someone really should make this a project. I think that using work from ScummVM maemo port would help a lot. I don't have expertise to do this any futher since I'm not a app developer.

Isn't that doable with ScummVM rather than Residual?

Wow. I've never had the time to finish grim Fandango on the PC...Maybe i will finish it on the N900!

Now, could you think about making a package and placing it into extras-devel/testing? :D

Gameplay video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhOhmdMCJcY

Its playable but needs some bindings (no esc button so no saving, inventory exit, bindings...) I think I can do something about it.

Same here. I've played this a lot back in the days. I like these kind of adventure style games. Keep us posted on the progress!

Can anyone at least also be so nice as to post a little bit of information on how to get this game to run for this who aren't all familiar with the xterminal?

Ah, the best adventure game of all time (of course, I'm excluding Monkey Island and similar classics)... Re-played it last year for the n-th time... Viva La Revolución!

I'm going on my long awaited vacation in couple of weeks, I'll gladly jump in to help with it :)

holy.... Grim Fandango is my top favorite game when companies still knew how to make adventure games and when people still understood what is good game rather than just keep shooting and kiling people.

Very sad there are not more good adventure games now

Have a look at Telltale Games, they make episode-based games, they made the new Sam&Max in 3D, and "Tales of Monkey Island" (same engine), which are both great in my opinion.

I was playing Monkey Island on my old WM5 phone, just before I got my N900 and had to set it aside (Monkey Island). Now it would be great to resume playing it! :D

Re: [Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

You can play Monkey Island franchise just fine on the N900 - ScummVM works pretty much ok.

I've been playing Monkey Island absoultely fine through ScummVM... who'd have thought a rubber chicken would come in so useful eh?!

Bump for pure awesomeness that is grim fandango.

Re: [Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

I uploaded residualvm version 0.2.0 (development snapshot) to extras-devel.
Keybindings added for maemo:
ctrl+shift+m access menu
ctrl+z Skips cutscenes

The game runs a bit slow on my n900, but I think is playable.

Still no OpenGLES? Want some help with it when I finish with Armagetron (I'm currently trying to port that one)? :P

edit: and are you now developing or maintaining it or just uploaded kinipyon's sources to repository?

I'll see what I can do about OpenGLES, of course any help is welcome :). I downloaded the sources from residualvm site and ported to maemo (I discovered this thread later).

Re: [Maemo 5] Residual (Grim Fandango engine) [WIP]

It works very well, at least in my N900, the only problem I noticed it´s that the bottom of the screen it´s missed so when you speak with someone cannot read the last option..

It should be upload to extras-devel, I´m sure more people are willing to try this version and replay, or play for first time, that great game which Grim Fandango is.

Thanks for this port!

I've already uploaded residualvm to extras-devel, if you install that version, in fullscreen mode you can see the whole screen.
