Windows XP Embedded for ARM or Windows Mobile on the N900?

Has anyone yet attempted to dual boot Windows XP embedded for ARM or Windows Mobile on the N900?

I assume running Windows CE for arm architecture is possible, more suitable and it will be easier.

Re: Windows XP Embedded for ARM or Windows Mobile on the N900?

i believe it can be but the best solution is to release vmware for n900! not to have wm into primary OS, because it sucks but to secondary! With vmware we will have all our dreams come true, like Android, linux, windows, any os into vmware. No warnings for brick your phone or anything else dangerous that could be mess your phone. I think that the speed in vmware will be more faster than the testings we trying on dosbox for loading a useless win31 or win95 or even nt.. the only thing that i will be fine for me is to have a fedora based enviroment like secondary os and not primary..

i like a winmo emulation or port too... sure the os sucks right now but there are apps that are really great like google maps, slingbox, and skyfire ( i need the silverlight support )

The beauty of this device is its open source OS with an impressive hardware for the community to explore. Why would anyone want to cripple it by adding an OS for dummies is beyond me.

Why because the device might actually gain features that every other mobile phone in the world has natively? (USSD anyone??)

I would be against WM on this device though, I would just feel.. dirty.

Re: How about Windows Mobile on N900??

Windows CE is not such a crazy idea. It's of course crazier than trying to install any other Linux distro, but I believe it's in the "plausible" area. Of course, you'll need a WinCE license to begin with.

Re: How about Windows Mobile on N900??

Good luck with that.

Where exactly do you think you'll get the drivers for the GSM chipset? Or other drivers for N900 unique hardware? WM is outdated, drivers wise, and generally doesn't have drivers for phones it doesn't ship on. May as well try to install XP or Win7. (In fact, that may be easier.)

N900's "unique hardware" is somewhat documented, and thus you could develop the drivers given enough free time. The rest (including drivers and BSP) is provided by TI. Though you'll need quite a bit of good luck to get to them. The "worst" part (aka the GSM, bme, etc.) I have no idea.

Basically, you would be a bit less limited than when trying to port your average kernel (since, for a start, you'd have drivers for the OMAP3).

I think the possibility of running selected WM software on the n900 could be cool. Like Wine with WM support.. :) As the people say there are software that would be interesting but who want's the WM os on the N900, that's not why i bought the phone and frankly will i would never install such thing.

Xp on the device would be nice, WinMo, no thanks, but to be fair, maemo eats both in my eyes. Haha.

Well, forget about XP. WinCE is the only one that is remotely possible.

It would probably be easier to just port moonlight in order to get silverlight support.

Windows CE / XP embedded are similar. XP embedded was also written for ARM so in theory, blatt the N900 boot loader it might work... Still food for thought.

No, Windows CE and XP Embedded are completely different. The first is based on the Windows CE kernel, and has been ported to a myriad of architectures, while the latter is based on NT and has been ported only to a handful (an ARM port has never been released so far).

not at all interested in winmo. Steve Ballmer is a villain. Every year, Microsoft is more evil than before, its loosing innovation and passionate ppl *fast* and cant stop the spreading open source software, instead hungry to always goto press once in a while with threats to sue linux companies for ip infringements. Its so cheap! When they dont give a **** about you than why do you have to go to get there *software*? But again, some people will never understand.

linux is pure out of passion, support it!

I used to install EPOS tills, and they came with Windows XP Embedded installed, but came with Windows CE 5.0 CD keys... Go figure because I ain't got a clue where the relationship is there.

Indeed. MS want total power over everything, which is why I love Linux, and support it all the way, and to be fair I'm moving towards ditching windows all together sooner of later anyways!

The whole subject of the topic originally was to gauge interest and see if it could be done because we can as it were!

And those weren't x86? Note that Windows CE _is_ available for x86 and in fact I still have the VM lying around here.
