[Announce] Hellenic (Greek) localization for Maemo5 Fremantle

On my last visit back home a couple of friends "complained" for the lack of a Greek translation for Maemo. I promptly responded: "The beauty/power of open source is that WE can correct that!!" and everybody looked at me even more puzzled!! :D

Thanks to firstfan, it is easy to add the Greek language (or any other language) using his project n900-locales-extras, since he has taken the responsibility for packaging locales for different languages.
I have already asked him and he has generated all the files needed to be translated.

Now, if you feel like helping, here is how:

First you need to create an account at www.transifex.net (if you don't have one already)
There is a nice video to show you how the translations are done - It's really simple.

Then, hop at: http://www.transifex.net/projects/p/...ns/c/main/l/el choose a component and start translating.

Other useful links:

Conversation (in Greek) for the translation work is done here

Nice, I try to figure out how to request him to add additional language to his package. Yes nice to have it in our own language ..

Hi chealyte,

Just go to http://code.google.com/p/n900-extra-...ns/issues/list
and add a new issue were you ask the files for your language to be created.

While I applaud the translation effort I'm a little worried about licensing of these strings - the en_US seems to be based off msgunfmt and dragged out from the currently (closed source?) Nokia strings?

In my licensing-cautious head, this strikes me as making them a bit tainted..

(That said, there seems to be indications the string licensing situation may improve which I'm immensely looking forward to)

Yes you are right and thanks for raising such a major issue.

I "know" that Nokia will not exercise their rights on this effort. The pity though, is that it will not support it and the work by their supporters and contributors will need to be double to achive this and moreover they will need to repeat it at every major version of Maemo.

If anyone knows an issue, brainstorm or similar to vote/follow please provide a link.

Thanks for installing it. Please feel free to report any mistakes or improvements you might find.

Anapospastos (you can thank him on the second post) is also one of the main contributors.

New release in extras-devel.

- Several corrections on fuzzy translated strings
- New addressbook format to show both Latin and Greek contacts.

For developers/translators

You can get the effect shown in the screenshot translate the addr_li_alpha_* ids in the following way:
Code:

msgid "addr_li_alpha_1"
msgstr "ΑΒΓ|ABC"

msgid "addr_li_alpha_11"
msgstr "ΑΒΓABC"

Happy testing :)

Announcing the fifth release of the package.

We managed to reach 94% of what is needed and at the same time spreading localisations in applications like mymenu and cell-modem-ui.

Off-topic: marking also my 500 post! :)

Geia xara,

Thanks for the offer. If you feel like using it, we'll appreciate reports with suggestions, errors, etc. See the first post for the link on the discussion in Greek if you prefer that.

Re: [Announce] Hellenic (Greek) localization for Maemo5 Fremantle

Delayed announcement of a new release.

Code:

file                  was -> now
-----------------------------------
modest                87% -> 88%
osso-cities            0%
osso-imageviewer-ui    84% -> 91%
osso-games            64% -> 89%
osso-applet-accounts  68% -> 93%
gtk20                  90% -> 95%
osso-location-ui      69% -> 89%

Now at 98% of total, see first post for more details.

Re: [Announce] Hellenic (Greek) localization for Maemo5 Fremantle

Thanks for this Saturn. Looks great!

I have a question, not sure if you can answer it. I have a bunch of old Greek MP3s with Greek ID3 tags etc.

These do not appear with greek characters on in the Media Player. They are rather shown as gibberish. Any idea why is this happening and whether it is possible to solve this without changing all the names?

Saturn 2010-05-17 16:23

Re: [Announce] Hellenic (Greek) localization for Maemo5 Fremantle

New release with name n900-locales-extras-elgr 20100516-r1442 that provides all new strings to be required by the upcoming PR1.2 firmware.

Completeness has dropped back to 97% even though many new translations have been added. :)
In any case, big thanks to Firstfan for adding all the new strings.

BTW, some new strings in the MfE and system-lock components looks like if people are working in providing the provisioning feature of the Exchange server. I'm sure I've read somewhere that it won't come in fremantle version.

Not sure how I missed this one. great job guys and a big thank you. One thing I noticed and correct me if I'm wrong: Shouldn't the web icon be translated in the menu as diaduktio instead of istos? Or is that considered the translation for internet?

Great job and effort nonetheless. Thank you!

Is this just for display purposes or does it have the functionality as well? Can I apply just this to my English localized N900 without tampering anything with else?

This whole package is a Greek translation for the UI. If you install it and want your menu, options etc to be displayed in Greek go to settings, language & region and select Greek as the display language. The update that saturn mentioned and you quoted is the use of the Greek alphabet when you select the option "select contact" from your phone menu.

Hope that helps.

If that suits you, you can replace only this file from the Greek translation to the English and you'll get only this feature.

Other people had this request when I got this idea and it has been tested to be working nicely.

Hope it helps.

Hey Saturn, do you mind looking at this post and putting your 2 cents into this? Can this be the cause of the problem or not as other users reported the same thing. Thanks buddy.

Re: [Announce] Hellenic (Greek) localization for Maemo5 Fremantle

Yes this has been reported also in other places by dimkit

For those using localisation files (for example http://maemo.org/packages/view/n900-...s-extras-elgr/) Ovi returns a message (in the local language) that it is unavailable for the device even though the specific language is available by Ovi.

The problem is definitely from the Ovi store setup and gets triggered when a different language is used in the device. The store (https://store.ovi.mobi) displays just fine the language if it is chosen online at the account settings > language, but it breaks completely when the same language is chosen in the device.

What's more, it completely ridiculous the difficulty in reporting such an issue to nokia.

Everything is working fine again Saturn. The funny part is that they were doing work on the ovi store and it was cause of the greek ui. The even funnier part was that Nokia replied to me and asked me to reset my phone. Go figure............. Thanks again buddy and keep up the great work! Na'sai kala!
