What's your Maemo device's killer app?

I just posted asking a question about whether anyone has Zim Desktop Wiki running on Maemo. That would be my killer app and would convince me to buy an N900.

Really I want to be convinced to overcome my innate miserliness in order to buy a very (to this geek) sexy product. So my question to you is: What is the killer app that you use on your Maemo device, and why?

I have several apps that i use frequently most noteable are the nes, snes, and gba emulators. I also enjoy the ability to open a termal on my phone and run any number of command line applications such as vim, ifconfig, find, grep, etc...

But like texrat stated above, the real killer app pf the n900 is the microb web browser. Full web experience, what you see on you desktop is what you see on your phone.

I think the screen is one of the 'killers' for me. The quality of viewing on a device so small is simply magnificent. That's about as sexy as it gets.

That. An awesome port of Xchat. Addition of CIFS support, a couple scripts, and I will have a wifi-based music sync that beats the hell out of any solution I've tried to date (now if only the media player didn't suck...)

Hear, hear. I am a fool for a gorgeous LCD. Anything else is just gravy. (Emulators are nice, too %^)

But on the other hand, I might not be totally impartial ;-)

Flipclock... sure I'm biased, but then, I didn't start it I just kind of took over development ;-) Objectively though... it lets me use my old N800 as a FULLY FUNCTIONAL beside alarm clock.

And of course ssh + xTerm is absolute killer for me too... more so since I discovered that you can ZOOM on XTerm the other day by accident!...

Currently living on the other side of the world - away from friends and family; the killer "app" is the full skype integration.
Once you have it - you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

The ability to stream live sport via subscription. No other mobile device can do this. Thanks to the n900 and mplayer.

I'm loving Conboy, Struggled like crazy with the one that comes with the phone.
I feel like my phone is finally coming together!
Just wish I could get on better with the media player and I would be a very happy bunny

why is everyone so impressed by the display? xD

never saw one of samsungs AMOLED-displays?^^
the n900's screen is great, no question about that, but not "killer feature"-great.

As stated the web browser, as it eliminates the need for many mobile apps, but for me, surprisingly, has been the native media player, and the "ibiza sonica" link that is pre-configured. I've been able to stream (something I recently found out that the Droid I used to have, is not able to do..natively) and record countless hours of house/tech music via my phone.

One of my killer apps is Easy Debian, which allows one to install just about any Linux application in a chroot environment, i.e. without messing around with Maemo and still being able to use all of the functionality of the N900. See e.g. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41605

I have just installed Zim under Easy Debian without any difficulty :) Thanks for drawing my attention to this app!

Re: What's your Maemo device's killer app?

Easy debian is powerrrrrful! i have jdownloader (java) downloading things all night :D Simple amazing. Im still trying to port that concept to dd-wrt, in my n900 is a reality.

but skype and the way that "conversations and contacts" merges several ways to get in touch with someone is simply revolutionary to me.

no other device give me that.

There is an app/function to record internet radio streams on-device?

Zim runs natively on the N900/N8x0.

Agreed. I did a side-by-side comparison with the nexus and the screen on the N900 blows it away!

As for my favorite app... having remote desktop control is very useful :)

Great! Hopefully it will soon appear in Extras!
For me, Easy Debian brings the full power of Linux to the N900. In particular, it allowed me to combine zim with Latex and run it with versioning control - things that probably will be stripped for the native app, no?

The web browser is OK, yes, but Easy Debian really got me hooked! And it's the latter which makes my colleagues having Androids really envious!

"Cool" is not an objective criteria by which applications can be quantitively measured.
Amazing applications would be Photoshop, a beautiful full 3D game, a fully functional PSX/N64 emulator, a fully functional integrated Media Player. Commandline apps are an automatic no-go

Easy Debian sounds good, but the resolution is too low to use it well. I'm also waiting till it hits stable quality before messing around with it

Sounds like a case of be careful what you wish for! I think if you got Photoshop on the N900, you would find it no more usable than The Gimp on Easy Debian. The resolution would still be too low.

To each his own, but I find the convenience of less and joe hard to beat. And frankly, there is no file manager better than Midnight Commander (mc).

Midnight Commander has the ugliest interface known to man.

Complex and nerd looking =/= intuitive
