SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

There's been a long, involved discussion over if this organization should be represented by some sort of character, in addition to the maemo.org logo (or in some cases in lieu of it) and if so, what that should be.

Before I construct any polls around narrowing down the choices, let's start at the top: do we even need a mascot, and why or why not?

Poll will run for 50 days. If you have strong feelings on this, by all means express them but note that "I like it" or "I don't like it" aren't likely to persuade or dissuade anyone. ;)

Current discussion: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28965

need something to distinguish from Nokia Maemo and community maemo. being the same name but just the lower cade and upper case is not helpful for general public who are in search for a place to complain nokia. there has been some thread where people thought this was a channel to complain nokia which it certainly isnt.

Absolutely correct, and I think a mascot can help. It would give us a unique identity.

I think the "not listening" mascot has already been taken though:

Can I appoint myself campaign manager for the ourobos lizard? I think a beastie would distinguish us from NokiaMaemo, and bring us into line with other Open Source communities. And it'd be Qt.

Sure, but let's get back to the philosophy of it all. ;)

for a start up a banner in both maemo.org and talk.maemo.org homepage saying this is not NokiaMaemo or some sort?
what about 5 penguins in a circle with all of them touching others fins. like 5 people holding hands and making a circle?

And here me thinking you were our mascot

Eh, let's speculate about specific mascots and other identity aids in their respective threads. This one is just for pros and cons of the concept itself.

50 days sounds excessive to me. I liked the comment I saw today from a Chinese premier: "Black cat, white cat, who cares? As long as it catches mice." From which I got the moral: Don't agonize over trivia, just go with what works.

Texrat 2010-02-08 07:32

Re: SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

I'm really in no great rush. The discussion that spawned this has gone on for quite some time (and lest ye correct me, as seems to be your mission in life, the sense of urgency expressed in the prior thread was pure tongue in cheek).

And the point of this thread is to get a sense of "what works", 50 days being what I felt a reasonable time to capture the eyeballs and thoughts of plenty of members.

Come on community, vote! If you don't care, at least select that option. ;)

Re: SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

Great things can come from having a mascot... but with a bad execution it can easily backfire too.

So, um, I guess what I'm saying is that it will highly depend on the implementation.

The "ae" wtitten ∞ "infinity like" is smooth enough in my opinion. If there's to be a mascot PLEASE don't let it be some annoying animal (penguin, pigeon, etc)

But btw, for all you non-latin language speakers out there:

"ae" is pronounced "e", the latin way like in the following words:
"buena", "metro", "metronome", message" - the reason I say this is because most Nokian (made by nokia with people from Nokia) did not spell this right.

Re: SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

Just be careful. It should not be a penguin or furry animal.
I vote Yes for a recognizable Logo with no letters as a "mascot". Remember not everyone that like something is a fanatic.

I agree with the no annoying animal part. I think a cool logo is enough.

Most Nokians probably pronounced it just right. Nokia is from Finland where people speak Finnish in which ae is not pronounced in the latin way. The person who came up with the name in the first place is Spanish, and the pronounciation in Spanish is very similar to the Finnish one. More about this here.

Maemo is not a Latin word, therefore Latin pronunciation really doesn't apply.

Hi all.

This might come a bit too late, but i can tell you how to pronunce "maemo". I came up with the name, so...

The origin is as stated: pwgen (a password generator utility which you can set to give you all character passwords) gave me an option, "maimo". I used 5 characters names for my machines, so i also restricted it to that. But I did not like the "i" so I changed it for an "e".

Maemo was the name of my desktop, and little by little it gathered importance in the project, as i made it the canonical repository for everybody involved. And became THE server. And the project. And the SDK. And the OS.

So now that the origin is clear, and me being Spanish and Finnish being pronounced almost exactly as Spanish...

"mah-Eh-mo"

mah as the beginning of my
eh as the "e" in "pet"
mo as in Monica, but only pronouncing the M and the O.

Hope you like it.

FYI: when this poll period is up, I'll create another one to weed out candidates. There are potentially so many that I believe there needs to be some clear criteria. For one, I think it's safe to rule out the joke submissions. I'm also inclined to only include submissions that have an actual design, rather than just text or reference photo. Thoughts?

You're assuming the 'yes' vote will win. ;) The nay-sayers are creeping up on the inside.

I'd create a poll using all the ones with proper design, if we get a clear majority. If it's borderline, maybe let it lie for a while.

Are you really using a poll on talk.maemo.org to decide on an official mascot for the whole of maemo.org? (Which'd then presumably be wanted in the heading of all the websites?)

Perhaps the poll needs some wider publication; or an explanation as to what the intent of the mascot is?

I could have sworn I also announced on maemo-community already. If not, easily rectified, and I was planning on periodic pings there anyway.

But no, THIS poll is not to decide that, Jaffa.

Yes, this poll is perhaps even more important than that. Whether or not to have one at all. . . .

Well, Maemo's ought to be a caterpillar or a tadpole -- some critter that suffers highly discontinuous transformations and essentially ends its existence before growing up.

Re: SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

i think we still need a maemo mascot just for the simple reason we can get him hidden in meego some where as a ever lasting legacy to maemo b/c its being left behind as we are moving on to meego

Re: SHOULD maemo.org have a mascot?

Well as it is announced that Harminton (SP?) is the offical Nokia branding for the instance of MeeGo that used to be Maemo 6

We do still have a separate product just with a MeeGo Harminton branding.

Seems that a good way to keep the Maemo history would be to create a Harmiton mascot that remembers the AE of Maemo.

I still think a personified character out of the AE would be cool.

I the current AE in the site logo could be changed into a hedgehog fairly easy,

Failing that a upper case A could form the body of a penguin with a lowercase e as the head.
