N800 video playback stopping
I have several movies that I converted with the Media Converter that played just fine on my 770, but the exact files halt anywhere between 10-20 minutes of playback on my N800. Anyone else experiencing this? They're playing from my internal 4GB card.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
Hi thoughtfix
Yes I have the same problem. The Video playback freezes after at least 10 minutes of playback. I have yet to play anything of at least 40 minutes duration without a single video freeze. Sometimes it will unfreeze if I wait a minute or so. Other times I have to restart the N800 to be able to play any video content at all after a freeze. I once found that the N800 was trying to establish a bluetooth connection to my mobile at the same time that a freeze occurred. Not sure if this is related. The AVI's I have were sourced from some 1Gb+ AVI's that I downsized using MediaConverter 1.2 Beta(Running on Ubuntu) with the following settings, - Medium Quality - Optimize for full screen - 2 passes - Enhance Color - Audio Gain The AVI's are loaded on a 2G SD card located in the internal slot. |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
same issue thoughtfix. video encoded using Nokia's Media Converter as well as aflegg's(?) 770-encode.pl.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
Sounds like someone needs to raise a bug... :)

Re: N800 video playback stopping
That's a good idea, Millhouse... but I am going to see if I can find some other files that DON'T stop to see if it's an issue with Media Converter and not necessarily the tablet. But then, if it worked on the 770 and not on the N800 ... hmm.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
HA! I took an episode of Family Guy, freshly re-coded it, and played it back on both side by side. The first thing I noticed was how much richer the color is on the N800. The second thing I noticed was the N800 halting video after only 3 minutes.
I noticed that my 770 was freshly flashed but my N800 had a few things running. I took a stab in the dark and was correct: After disabling the load applet, I was able to watch up to the 13th minute before it died. I disconnected WiFi and closed my browser which had Gmail open, then opened the media player and started again. It started halting at the 3rd minute. I recoded it using "Action movie" and turned off 2 passes. While doing so, my tablet up and rebooted. (why oh why is there no syslogd in there) Anyway, while doing so I searched bugzilla for any bugs in Media Player on the N800. I found none, so I started writing a new one while encoding finished. Once that was done, I started playing the video through. It halted at 10 minutes, but when I hi the "zoom" button, it started playing again. Still - it's a bug! I submitted it. Here's the bug. Add any details if you can replicate it. |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
Same deal. Videos that played fine on 770 no longer play completely on n800.
This includes videos encoded by Nokia's Media Converter & 770-encode.pl and played via the Media Player or Media Streamer |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
is it related to http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=4317

Re: N800 video playback stopping
Possibly, but I had already added the n800best settings to 770-encode.pl and am still having issues with playback stopping.
|
Re: N800 video playback stopping
ssam: also if they've regressed video performance that's a bug, even if you can now get better performance out of it with different settings.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I am having the same problems with an episode of Friends that I converted using DVD Catalyst (in the Nokia 770 option, 320x200 or whatever it is, as well as a higher 480x320 resolution I tried). It freezes after only 5-6 seconds!!! Any progress on this bug? A bit disappointing if I can't convert DVDs for viewing on the n800!

Re: N800 video playback stopping
Just thought I'd add that the files all play when streamed onto the n800 via orb... is that strange... I don't know much about all this!

Re: N800 video playback stopping
Somehow a former co-worker of mine manages to watch entire movies on his N800 with Media Player, no problem. I wish I had his contact info to find out what he's doing...

Bug is still not assigned. Don't forget to vote it up!

See bug #944. Edit: Ferenc just upped the N800 vote limit to 1000 (same as 770). Thanks Ferenc! :) |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
I have the same issue also. I just download the Media Converter couple days ago. The conversion went flowlessly, but not the play back from the N800. A few things I should mention here. I encoded using the second best option, w/ 2 passes. And it play smoothly. I ssh into the unit, and run top while playing it. It appear w/ that setting, the system only use about 50-60% CPU at fullscreen. as I guessed, the CPU isn't the problem here. Also I notice that, playing video FS can make problem worse as it freeze more often. BTW, most of my converted video are music video. Mostly are under 10minutes anyway, but yeah it still freeze.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I tried Media Converter 1.3 last night and am still getting some freezing... and it does recover eventually but not well.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I don't believe how BAD the video aspect of the n800 is. I LOVE the n800 - don't be mistaken. However, I think you need to make some sort of offering to the gods and spin around twice if you want to be able to actually view video on this thing.
Can someone - who claims to be watching movies (videos) on the N800 please describe in detail what format, codec, resolution, bitrate, etc. should be used to get it to work. Also if the tools used in the process can be identified, this may enable fools like myself who have wasted hours to see no more then 8 seconds of video - actually watch video on the coolest new tool. Thanks |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
I have used the following players also have frozen when playing video:
Nokia's media player: (Hangs on playback) __ The video from all the following sources hangs on play-back: __ Video transcribed with Media Converter PPC. __ Video transcribed from DVD via HandBrake to the following specs: (Resolution 400x240 at a video bitrate of about 600Kbps at same as source fps with MP3 audio at 48000Hz sampling frequency, 128K bit rate, in stereo) The Mplayer media player (Hangs on playback) (as an aside, this player plays the same videos I play on my 770, no transcribing needed) The Canola media player(Hangs on playback) I can't imagine at what level this problem originates, also the Nokia supplied video does not seem to hang. I may transcode it to see if it breaks after it has been processed. |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
I've noticed that easiest way to recover from the freeze is press fullscreen button once, then it recovers, then back again to get to fullscreen mode.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
The hanging is fixed in the latest MPlayer, at least for me. Playback is smooth, except that tearing is much more visible in mplayer :(

I had the same problem, and tech support for DVD Catalyst was unable to fix it (although he was very nice and tried to help by offering several solutions). Upgrading to Nokia's latest OS did not help. I'm trying to use Media Converter 1.3, but I can't figure out how you get the TV program on DVD into a format that can be recognized when dragged into the "Select Files For Conversion" field. Has anyone figured out how to do this efficiently? |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
Has anyone tried MediaStudio 4.0 for Nokia? It claims to rapidly convert DVD's to the Nokia 800.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I believe the problem where videos would hang in Media Player is now fixed in the latest 3.2007.10-7 firmware.

Unfortunately, I have installed the latest firmware, and am still having the same problems. |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
I'm fairly sure I've seen posts suggesting that videso were no longer hanging, however if you still experience videso hanging with the new firmware then you should add a comment to bug #991 which deals with this problem. :(

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I'll be getting my n800 this week- has this problem been fixed for most people with the new firmware?
|
Re: N800 video playback stopping
The latest firmware shines in video playback.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
"Shines" is a bit too strong a word, IMHO.
The built-in video player gets awfully confused when you switch from fullscreen to windowed playback, which is essential when you want to fast forward through some commercials or something. It carries on trying to play it and, more often than not, hangs. It'd be better off pausing the video for a second. Still, at least it doesn't pause in the middle: it's a step up, at least. |
Re: N800 video playback stopping
I use DVD Ripper for Mac. Select Creative Zen, and set zoom to medium. I've put a couple DVDs successfully onto n800 with this. More experimentation needed though.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
My video converted with Media Converter OS X Universal allowed the vid to play for a couple of minutes but then started playing 2x or 3x speed. I instead used ffmpegX to convert the same video and used the built-in AVI DIVX mencoder profile. I only changed the resolution to 400 x 224 on the video tab and it worked like a champ during play back for the first ten minutes or so then went into the fast forward thing again. This file is less than 200 MB.

Re: N800 video playback stopping
I have two movies over 1 hr each. The first one would go to slow motion after 1 hr mark and it seems the N800 halts. The second movie does not have the same symptom though. The two movies were converted by Nokia video converter from avi to mp4.
Strange !!! |
