Stop negativity- Most of u here are temporary

I hope that title fits in the space. lol.

I have been here since I got my phone a month ago. my last phone was an N80. I had it for almost 5 years. costed me $618. when it broke and I sold it, the parts got me $56 on ebay. I like to buy high end phones, then keep them for multiple years at a time, then spend half of a thousand dollars again on another, new device.

When you see how many people around you (mostly women) buy a $120 phone, then a year later renew their contract and spend $120 more because their last phone barely functions (women tend to mistreat their phones), you can see that this is a pretty smart investment idea, and 5 years of $120 is about the same as $500 in 5 years anyways.

Buying a phone to me, is something I need to think about carefully. like buying a car. I did my research, and realize this is the phone I want for the long haul. I couldn't have made a better decision.

As I scroll up and down these forums, I'm finding more and more complaining and whining about how this mobile internet device with cellular phone capabilities doesn't do all the things your last phone did. If you're going to whine, then do it to your friends, not on these forums. I get it, alot of you are disappointed, fine, then hurry up and resell your phone to people who are going to appreciate it.

Most of you here are whiners, who just bought the N900 because it was expensive. you're going to whine until the (insert the phone that you consider better than this one) comes out, then you're going to buy that one, sell this phone, and whine on the next forum you move on to. That's what you do. Also, when you are on your next forums you're going to make comments like "My N900 used to be able to (insert function here), I can't believe this one can't do this"

I am here to stay, and quite frankly, I can tell that previous n810/n800 owners seem to be here to stay too. I think I will just hold off on posting for a while until the 'whine heat' dies down, and I will feel that I am among people who truly care about this device.

If you yourself were offended by this thread, then you are exactly the person I am speaking to.

I could have just kept this all in, but I would like to know, do people here agree with me? or am I alone in thisway of thinking. notice how I am civil in my commenting, and my comments are coherent. Please try the same. I don't want this to turn into a flame war.

Civil, yeah... but you won't be completely popular by singling out women.

And my data set is admittedly limited, but out of the 4 people using cell phones in the house, here's how my family breaks down:

Me: rarely any problem losing or damaging phones
Wife: frequent trouble abusing her phones (purse seems to be culprit)
Son #1: constant problem losing, breaking and forgetting to charge phones
Son #2: occasional lost phones but impeccable care when he has them

;)

EDIT: out of that set, take a wild guess who pays for, finds and fixes phones.

Sorry but dont paint everyone with the same brush - the N900's issues need to be brought up in order for them to be sort out. Theres constructive criticism and just negativity.

The same can be said for some people just attacking anyone who says anything negative about the N900 - chill out.

My opinion,,,, sound like a fair remarks ;)

well, not all female don't take care of their phone, i have seen some of them really so darn techie than me and more careful when handling their phone, hahahahaha.

One thing for sure, my wife don't give a damn abt what phone I gave her. hahahahah :D

Re: Stop negativity- Most of u here are temporary

I'll try hard to overlook the sexism. I think your underlying motivation is probably good: you're right that there will always be people who get the newest thing only to complain at what it won't do. (I have yet to get the n900 to make me a cup of tea in bed in the morning).

But remember when you paint with a broad brush, you create boxes that actually don't fit real people. Almost everyone reading what you have said will find some reason it doesn't fit them (in my case, I'm female, and while I run devices into the ground its with work. I don't 'just break' them.)

The pleas for less unconstructive whining (note, that's not constructive suggestions and the like) is well made, though.

The N900 isn't perfect, but then again what device is? I am happy to see that problems are being addressed. Especially happy to see all the wonderful apps sprouting up in extras-devel :)

I disagree with the sexist comment.......
Although:
- My Mum
- My Girlfriend
- My Sister
- My Girlfriends Brother
- My Step-Dad
All Mistreat their phones, Its not down to sex that determines phones getting smashed........Just down to the individual.

What worries me is what your wife thinks of you brain sharing with some strange female. Maybe it's time you bought her a new phone.

She's just happy I quit using hers.

And I fixed her silly pink beat-up phone last night.

If the whiners should stop posting, the fanboys should too. Both add no value.

No no, fanboys drive up ad revenue.

So how do we turn unconstructive whiners into constructive, useful community members?

Dear Roger,

I've read your message and I'm very confused. I do not own an N900 but I do own an N800 and for some reason feel offended by your thread even though I suspect you are not speaking to me. It might be the sexist woman-hating or maybe the fact that you're telling new N900 owners to effectively bugger off instead of listening to them, even if they are a transient portion of the community. I can't tell which of the two is worse... That you're making the geek equivalent of a 'women drivers' slander or that you're telling new owners that their rantings and complaints are baseless and irrelevant instead of keeping an open mind toward the reasons and solutions for their complaint.

I, for one, am interested to hear what people like and dislike about their new N900 and I'd appreciate it if you allowed them to exercise their ability to express their joys and frustrations. I just as much enjoyed reading threads about the flaws as I liked the threads where people posted photos. They both swayed my opinions in both directions and gave me an appropriate appreciation of the N900.

In closing, I hope that you yourself take some of your own advice and mute your own need to complain about the PEOPLE, or else realize that the same people are complaining about a product and a brand.

Good day. :)

I was many things when I arrived here... but I don't think 'unconstructive' or 'whiner' are anywhere close. 'Totally Ignorant', 'Stupid', 'Asking the most basic (and sometimes brainless) questions' and maybe even 'Over-enthusiastic' might just cover it. Along with 'Excessive poster'.

Come to think of it, I haven't change much, have I1 :p

If people don't whine and complain, there will be no progress or improvements made.
It's part of human nature. We are never satisfied enough. It's a good thing really.

I'm sure you have gripes about the N900. It definitely has it's shortfalls. Some very big. No douting that. Constructive feedback or not, Nokia should listen to it all. Not every buyer is tech savvy. They shouldn't have to be to be able to enjoy the great web browser, multi-codec video player, built-in FM transmitter etc.

Nokia released a device. Which pretty much we ALL agree that it's not as robust and all around complete as some other current competitor devices. Even the OP said it's a mobile computer with cellphone capability. I say that to my friends also and I know what that implies. (It's not perfect, it's not for everyone, many won't like it)

If Nokia wants MORE people to stay with the Maemo and for a long time, it needs to be better and more accessible right from the start.

RIght now, if you don't come to the forums and know your way around computers, you only get to see and do about 20% of what N900 can do. (such as adding more repositories and getting access to about 400+ extra apps, using apt-get to get around failed installs or upgrades. manmually needing to edit files to even create your own folders in the launcher menu etc etc)

Heck, even the OVI store is BETA and it's been 3+ months since the N900 is released.

Anyways, even if I don't keep the N900 for a long time, my next phone will be a Maemo 6 device that's for certain.

I hope the next device is more complete.

I for one know i am here for the long haul , i have a 24 month contract on the phone !!!!

This board seems to me a fairly balanced placed , very helpful from what i have read , we need to stop it becoming too much one way or the other, like another board i was on recently where a phone named after a green tree growing fruit was treated like a GOD, and anyone who had problems was obviously mentally challenged..

My guess from what i have seen ( i work in the phone industry ) is people either don't know the device , the os (like me) or think it will be instantly capable of everything ..

just my 2p, i'll shut the door on my way out lol

I suddenly felt the need for a 'slap with a wet haddock' option next to 'thanks'.

Actually, that's quite on topic. Many of the unconstructive 'whiny' threads have the same effect on me. Please note - I am not refering to constructive, useful criticism. ;)

I disagree. There usually is a very good reason why people whine.
You cannot expect all great ideas to come from nice and constructive comments.

The fact that many of my tech savvy workmates still think iPhone/Android is a better device than the N900 is a great example.
Ooh, it's too fat, it's too heavy, music player sucks, video playback is choppy, video recording is choppy, everything is in landscape mode, email app is too simple etc etc.

It's all basic things people complain about the most.

Well, I'm only speaking from personal experience of course. I've seen that people who can effect improvements tend to tune out whiners because they offer little substance and a lot of noise. Therein lies the difference with and advantage of constructive criticism.

okay well you are all right, that was some rather sexist remarks. I aplogize profusely. And you're somewhat right, I'm actually just whining about whining. which is why as I said I'm gonna kick back from posting for a while.

The best answer for chronic complainers is no answer at all... This thread won't bring any useful results, maybe just getting more complainers to join their army...

Freedom of speech, buddy!! No need for a "peace and love" speech, but just ignore what doesn't matter to you.

Well said! This is just as large of a problem (if not larger) than 'whining'.

One man's 'whining' could be another man's 'passionately caring about something that does not act as advertised or bringing it to the attention of the community'

Attacking anyone who says anything negative about a device that both of you own is about as counter-productive as you can get..
