Joiku for n900 available :)

as an old n95-8gb user of joikuspot I am really happy that the guys have launched their beta application today.

Just saw it on facebook... downloading on this moment:

http://www.joiku.com/index.php?actio...product_id=605

The best... It is currently FREE - beta.. (!)

when you open it in the web broeser, it should open app manager and start installing the program.

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

This is great news - my friends at work were always impressed by my N96's ability to allow them to connect to the internet over wireless through my phone. Was great on work trips etc...

I wanted to show off my N900 but they weren't as impressed due to the lack of Joiku... next work week away, it can be business as usual!

Really easy to install - second link does the trick!

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

Feedback to the developers: please put the helpfile of the "Quide" (Guide?) not in /usr/share/joikuspot, but in /opt/share/joikuspot.
Also check the installation for possible optification (but as few data in /usr or root, most things should go into /opt)

beta version works, but is a bit unstable. DHCP server does not work to me either, i had to set up IP adress manually...

You should feed these comments back to them directly - I don't think they have an account over here!

Installed fine. Starts up fine. Connects to t-mobile internet fine.
Laptop connects fine to hotspot. Keeps rebooting my N900 when data transfer starts with my Vista 64bit laptop.

In the website said that it is a bug with some laptops, you must restart joikuspot and try again, more info here http://www.joiku.com/index.php?actio...product_id=605

Anyone looked at how this is implemented? Fully in user space? New kernel?

The bug is in the kernel module for the wifi, see this post, or the thread itself for another approach.

They have a simple kernel module, which seems to do just about nothing so the rest of NAT must be happening in userland.

People wishing to discuss how they did the messy bits are invited to join this thread.

It doesn't have WPA/WPA2 and it calls WEP, WEB ! haha :)

EDIT: and reboots as soon as my laptop connects...!

I am a little bit intimidated by all that Kernel discussion on that thread. I doesn't sound like anyone posted a howto yet.

Did anyone test it with a non-Windows Vista 64bit laptop?

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

Sadly it looks like they've elected to host their own repository instead of uploading it to either Extras or the Ovi Store. Unfortunate. . . .

"howto" is at the project homepage, this does involve running a custom kernel and doing stuff that definitely would deserve the boilerplate warning application manager gives to software not signed by nokia if it was installable via HAM at all.

I have not idea what people have been testing it with, AFAIRecall I'm the only one who has been posting any machine identifiers.

Extras does not allow binary only AFAIUnderstand, of course Ovi has no such limitiation. So indeed, why not there ?

EDIT: I was wrong, extras has non-free section too.

Currently it's in early beta, so there's no way they'd get it into the Ovi store (or should be no way). They may choose to do it differently when it reaches a final release (and when Nokia get the Ovi store working properly).

The S60 version of Joikuspot is available via the Ovi Store, so one can make a safe assumption that it will show up there once it's out of beta.

It says they have it there since there is no GUI for set up but now there is. Does that mean we don't have to do all the stuff in the setup?

Update: I just tried it with a Windows XP PC. It works.
So clearly a vista X64 issue. As usual M$# strikes again.

The howto steps are up-to-date, some of the surrounding texts are/were not. hotspot_frontend.py has dialogs to choose which gprs connection to use and what is the name of the network and a big start/stop button.

But really; there is a reason this is not even in extras-devel yet...

OTOH the custom kernel has a patch that should solve the reboot issue (whether the Joiku kernel module will work without recompilation [or even with recompile, they might have been sloppy and suppose noone changes network config in kernel...])

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

Ok. got over the 49--15 error. But now, no matter what connects to it. it reboots. shame :(

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

it works with safari, and yes it rebooted the first time and then it work. I guess it will only get better in a few days. Just report all the bugs to JoikuSpot. However can I browse from the N900 when sharing my connection I am getting "page load error"?

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

Well gave it the old college try 4 times. Rebooted shortly after connect each time. Will wait for a slightly less beta.

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

I installed it and yes it rebooted once but after that I had no problem hooking it up to a laptop. I did notice one thing. When you initially connect your laptop to joiku connection it looks connected but it really isn't. I had to disconnect and reconnect and boom it worked. Looks promising through a 3G connection. I could have used this when I went to a resort last month and they didnt have internet this would have done the trick on my laptop. I guess there are always future trips I now can look forward to. lol.

Installed fine, and works with my Eee pc 901 (windows XP).
No reboots so far.
It uses 100% CPU when connected, so battery won't last long.

Re: Joiku for n900 available :)

update: it works once using Safari, N900 shows connectiong and DHCP address but cannot surf the web on computer. I reinstall the application and the same thing...anyone else having the same issue with Safari? I also try connecting IPOD, same thing shows IP address on N900, but no surfing the web.
