Why I keep my N810

I'm not the most active maemo-contributor in any way but I do keep my N810 around and a few times, in different situations it has 'saved me'. Even though...it's a dead OS.

My N810 use is currently, approximately;

25%: SMS and transcribed voicemails through Dialcentral
This is the app that has 'saved' me the most.

10% Quick notes on...Quicknote.
Love this app (but I liked it more before those slide bars appeared and stole a lot of screen-realestate).

10% The occasional podcast through Gpodder and Panucci
I use my Zune but sometimes I get a podcast onto it 'just because'.

10% Note-taking on YellowNotes
Still one of my most favorite apps

10% Tracking appointments in Seqretary
Still lacking a lot of features this is still the best schedule app I found.

10% Skype calls
Not bad when in a bind.

10% The occasional game through VGBA
Final Fantasy II and Mana Sword at the moment

5% The occasional movie through MPlayer

5% Email checking through Macuco
I'd use it more if it wasn't so slow and only allowed for one gmail account.

5% Alarmclock with Flipclock
The app has a pretty big footprint and have failed me a few times so I normally just use my phone.

Even though I'm "awaiting Mer" I can't help but to wonder how/if it would change my usage.

How are you other, legacy-device users using yours?

Re: Why I keep my N810

I dusted my N810 for the sole purpose of testing my Pandora Radio app/GUI because someone else requested I port it for them.

I now carry it with me to tether to my G1 phone to listen to Pandora.. because I like my app & pianobar better than Pandora's :D.

That's all I really use it for though.

Re: Why I keep my N810

Don't have a N900 - only an N810 and an N800. really want a N900, but don't like the smaller screen, and no navigation, and the fact theat the wife would kill me if I dropped 500 notes on one! Cannot help feeling that it's just a faster N810, and suffers from the same half-hearted, and half finished feel that earlier versions have.

The N810 is my main device, and is used for the following..

MP3 playing with Canola as the whole library random mode is so easy, and with mplayer as the back end it supports A2DP nicely, so I can use my stereo bluetooth headphones. Oh yea, podcasts and internet radio as well.

Web browsing, microb.

Email ( modest - default using gmail via IMAP)

Twitter - Mauku

Xterm - for SSHing to my Mythtv server

Mplayer - for playback of transcoded recordings from Mythtv, and DVD rips.

Built in chat for Gtalk, MSN and now facebook chat.

OMweather for weather (what else!)

Maemo Mapper for moving Gmaps displaying live traffic information

Wayfinder, for when I need Sat Nav

Flipclock - for when I need a large time display

OSM2GO for mapping my local area to add to Openstreetmap.

Re: Why I keep my N810

I do love my n810!
And I really sad about the degradation of Internet tablets - I mean n900 (It my opinion.) I hope Nokia will create something between 770 and n810 for us.

40% is for Web access for me. (Tear with some improvements)
10% is for IM (jubber) and VOIP (Skype) (Thelepathy, Pidgin, Skype)
30% is for reading (Fbreader)
10% is for listening music and watching a movies (or youtube) between the lessons in the university (Youamp, @scene, Mplayer)
10% is for other fings, like games or music (Theremin), office (working with .doc, .xml etc) (Abiword, gnumeric) or GPS navigation (I love the GPS so much, it works very good and saved me so many times) (maemo mapper + minigpsd)

Unfortunately its not so good like my Palm TX. Palm much better like PDA, but n810 is an Internet tablet, not PDA. I am using both of it.

Re: Why I keep my N810

I use my N810 every day. It's my primary PIM device using GPE aps and Notecase which are file compatible on my Ubuntu systems. If you will my use approach is as a pocket computer with Internet access. I very much like the USB Interface that allows me to be Host or Device. The lack of a proper USB alone is enough to keep me away from an N900. I will be using the N810 for a long time.

Re: Why I keep my N810

I have both the N800 and the N810 and plan to use them for awhile. Use mine mostly for listening to Old Time Radio shows on an application I developed called otrplayer. Also track my car mileage on my Car Mileage Calculator (mileage). Other than that do some web access but run out of memory fast on some sites. Also use to read my email on the go. Use mplayer to capture mp3 streams that I wish to record to listen to at a later time.

Re: Why I keep my N810

The N810 is a better book reader than the N900, no question about it, because of the larger screen. I have been reading Kindle books on the N810 because I like the color screen.

Also, the N810 allows you to play Audible books, and the N900 doesn't. That is a big plus.

Re: Why I keep my N810

fbreader, internet, email, seqretary, gvoice w/gizmo, streaming tv & radio, rss feedreader, map, maemo mapper, gps, trustme, etc.
- it's indispensable to me.
i wish i could get regular earbuds to work with the built - in mic for phonecalls like others supposedly can.
Kroll - abiword really works for you in diablo? which version?

Re: Why I keep my N810

I was just thinking about this earlier today.

I use my N810 almost everyday but I don't use Modest e-mail. I do use Tear or MicroB, I do use DialCentral like a champion, I don't tether it to my iPhone (although I've used Maemo PAN without a prob in the past) but... I use it when I don't feel like lugging my laptop around.

And honestly, it works just fine.

Notes with Xournal - handwritten all the way, IM's via RTComm, web surfing the majority of the web (all but Hulu) and it works just like I want it to. Heck, I even admin two websites with it.

I keep mine because it does what I want it to do. Play music, play a few movies, allows me to read some comic book cbr's via Evince, and is the right size.

GPS, meh. I had to use it one time while camping, got a lock in under 2 minutes. First damn time it's ever done that, and I couldn't be happier. I don't expect that normally, but sure enough, it came through when I needed it.

I actually still love the N810. It became a piece of equipment that I use quite often... that's why I keep mine.

Awesome thread.

Dude, I almost named my son Marvel (joking)... but yep, comic book geek since before I could read.

Still reading them, no longer collecting.

Re: Why I keep my N810

I've started rifling through every app that I've never tried before and ran into cbr reader.

I even subscribed to my first RSS feed to Comics Land yesterday.

The only comic I have so far is The Darkness - Shadows and Flames.

Pretty cool stuff to be able to view it on the tablet. :)

Any suggestions for someone like me who is just now finding out about this?

Re: Why I keep my N810

My N810 is with me and used most days.

Mainly:
MicroB web browsing
E-Mail
OMweather
Solitaire
Seqretary as a backup to papyrus on my e62

Occasionally:
Mplayer for movies/mp3's
fbreader
USB Control for access to misc files on USB Sticks

I WiFi connect regularly via a cradlepoint portable hotspot and a usb cellular modem it's great in the office (off the corporate network) or on the road.

Re: Why I keep my N810

As far as comics go, my tastes have matured as I have. I tend to like certain style of books. I love the Darkness, actually... just purchased the Compendium for it last week in fact.

Lately, I've been surprised by Marvel's Dark Avengers, Secret Warriors and now Siege. They're mixing in my absolute favorite villain, Dr. Doom into the mix in a way that... well, surprises me. That and the reboot of Iron Man - literally, a reboot of his brain - has my attention too, and that ties into the Siege line very well. I'm surprised that I returned to a Marvel book, so I started looking at the others... Punisher MAX, part of the more adult MAX line is running their Kingpin story anew. And the way it's written is creative and great. That's another reboot actually.

On the DC side, Blackest Night had my attention for a while; but it's starting to get too spread out, so stick with the Green Lantern part(s). This came after the amazing Sinestro Corps arc which was, for all intents and purposes a redefinition of that portion of the DC side.

On Vertigo, I JUST finished the entire 100 Bullets series. I collected that for almost 10 years, and honestly... it was a good ride. Very adult, I somehow gravitated to the bad guy of the series, Lono and it's pretty bad ***. The ending though... I'm still thinking about that one.

If you liked The Darkness, the 3 part series of The Darkness & Pitt both was a good series, ended abruptly.

I have some other picks, but they tend to be rather dark. And by dark, I mean dark & a tad bit demented. Not because it reflects me at all, I just like sardonic wit and adult writing styles. The Boys is a deep satire, even to itself actually. Irredeemable and it's spin-off Incorruptible are both written by Mark Waid. The Boys is written by Garth Ennis - I love his writing style and when he's let loose, he's dark and witty.

Scalped is a bit darker, but the story really is worked well, reminds me of Azzarello's work on 100 Bullets.

I'm all over I guess. Matters on what you like. I'm a Batman fan, but only tend to pick him up when the story is good - Batman: Widening Gyre & Batman: Hush are examples of GREAT story, great pacing, and Batman as I see him... dark, dry wit and showing how he's the world's best detective first and foremost.

After that, I've been a secret Green Lantern fan always, but also a huge Dr. Doom & Darkseid fan - love the bad guys.

Hope that helps. I got many more man.

I use my N810 everyday and won't be letting it collect dust anytime soon. I just wish there was more CPU power and bus power; every time I consider an N900, I just have to remind myself of the small screen size.

Was thinking of getting the n900 until i saw it in a shop last week - way too small - i`ll make do with using my mobile phone via bluetooth as modem and will be keeping my n810.

Re: Why I keep my N810

I don't use it much, but I do use it every day, reading rss feeds in the morning and some light browsing with tear from time to time.
Anything else is too taxing on the battery (I have a couple of cheap ebay batteries that last around 1 hour each, the original battery doesn't last for more than 10 minutes).
Edit: oh, and I also use maemo mapper to track the position when I take a ferry. I just have to choose a location with a nearby 220v socket :p

Re: Why I keep my N810

In no particular order:

listening to internet radio
Skype
recipes
notes
web browsing (mainly webmail, facebook, blogging, and twitter, using microb)
marking sites on the map/gps
downloading/playing videos (esp for my grandson to watch in the car, restaurants, whatever)
reading ebooks
SMS (via google voice)
alarm clock
podcasts
rss feeds
camera (grandson makes cute faces when he's watching himself!)
mp3 player
photo album/shower-offer :)
keeping track of weather
Bible (fits in my pocket for church better than my big one)/reference materials
games to kill time

"N8" as I call him, is my constant companion and I am using him constantly all day and often during the night...can't imagine what I'd do without him. Blogged about him last summer (http://chiachatter.blogspot.com/2009...ove-story.html) but I use him for even more stuff now. Hope he never wears out, and have no intention of getting the 900.

Re: Why I keep my N810

Have a N800 but not used anymore due to the screen constant rolling. So I got a N810 WiMAX, nice replacement. I use it for:

Internet Radio (while on the road I can keep up with home news) with the stereo speakers it allows me to listen while not having to carry it around with a headset while in my hotel room.

Log in to my vpn dd-wrt router (while on the road/hotels/airports) with openvpn where I can securely stream my music (flac) from Ampache, surf the net and make voip calls.

DialCentral... what can I say about it, a Swiss Knife of communication tool.

Boingo Mobile unlimited for $8.00 a month world wide makes caring my N810 on the road a no brainier, and Clearwire 4g is icing on the cake!

Hope Nokia comes out with a tablet the same screen size or larger (N900 is screen too small).

Re: Why I keep my N810

Like N8than (the name for my N810) for navigation on the highways with MaemoMapper...when I have internet access to get the maps needed for the area I am in - which is rare.
It holds all my passwords for all my account with Passwiord Safe.
Using MyTube to view videos on YouTube of Yamaha PSR-E413 electronic keyboards (my latest investment) and Christian videos.
Aisleriot Solitaire for a quiet card game. Barrage when I want something noisy and want to blow something up.
Firefox browser for surfing the web. Pidgin Internet Messenger to access all my IM accounts with one program. And of course, use Skype and also to keep tabs on my Google Voice.
Chiaowl is my better half and when her battery goes dead out on the road, I let her use my battery to keep doing what she does...more than I do...while her battery charges in my unit....only so much I can do while driving. Thought about selling it. Thought about just giving it away. Glad I didn't do either Chiaowl may have to send hers in for repair...N8than can keep her company while the repairs are being done. :-)

Does no one else (aside from Kroll) use it for office software? It think running OpenOffice at very good speeds is one of the killer features of the N810. It's saved me a bunch of time when I was on the road and needed type out a word doc or edit a spreadsheet.

BTW, nice thread tags. ;)

Same as Hordeman :
Open Office works fine, thanks to Qole's amazing work !
I find it very usefull.

I really love using FBReader too ... because the device is really pocketable at have a very good screen for indoor AND outdor use.
I find reading on the n810 better than on real paper !

Music listening at work, without headphones is very good too, thanks to the built-in speakers and the very good player : Canola.

Re: Why I keep my N810

Why wouldn't I keep it? Really, it still works great, still runs the apps it ran before, more actually... It's awesome.
  • It wakes me up in the morning (FlipClock)
  • It flashes if I have mail (built-in mail client IMAPed to Gmail).
  • It lets me browse the web (built-in browser) sans adverts (lmhosts file) for news and my morning Dilbert (just prepping for work).
  • It's my journal, reminder system, todo list, and quicky note taker (quick-clip with some custom Perl scripts).
  • It tells me if I should carry my umbrella (omweather).
  • It's my speedometer if I drive the van (speedometer via GPS), because the one in the van is broke and I'm too lazy to fix it.
  • It's my ODBCII interface if I drive the car (carman), because I'm too cheap to pay someone else to fix it.
  • It's my lunchtime entertainment (panucci) with downloads from OTR, or (mplayer) videos.
  • It's my calendar (mCalendar - synced to Google).
  • It's my GPS when travelling (maemo-mapper, though I keep map as a backup for when I'm out of a cached area).
  • It's my Japanese language flashcard prompter (FullRecall - though I might switch to something new).
  • It lets me doodle out project designs (Xournal).
  • It's my book reader (FBreader) - and it seems that reading in portrait with red letters on black is easier on the eyes than a regular book.
  • It keeps my secret stuff (notecase).
  • It lets me try out programming ideas in Perl (geany with a custom keyboard map to get the Perlisms).
  • It lets me add up numbers on occasion (built-in calculator).
  • It lets me show off my travel pictures when visiting (media player - which I find better for slide-shows than canola).
  • It lets me keep up with the podcasts (canola).
  • It lets me search the web (often with a custom search plugin to skweezer).
  • It lets me search my Google notebook (another custom search plugin).
  • It lets me check my cellphone answering service (gizmo, because skype wouldn't do the touch-tone calling tree), because I'm too cheap to use my pay-as-you-go cellphone.
  • It lets me SSH into my home Linux computer and fix things when I've mucked the X11 settings (ssh from the terminal).
  • It lets me remote-desktop into my work server and fix things without having to get to a desktop system (pyrdesktop through vpnc).
  • And, of course, there's Numpty Physics... just because.

And, geewizz buddy, why would I need 100,000 more apps? I'll keep my N810 until the battery dies... oh wait, I have spares. Okay, I'll keep it until my kid laughs at me when I pull it out (and he's not born yet).

David...

Re: Why I keep my N810

I love my N800 and use it daily as well. I am a device geek and search at least weekly for the latest and greatest. Until I can find a device in the N800 form factor with a 2GB processor and 2GB of RAM, it's still the best thing going. I've got Open Office (thanks Qole!) a bluetooth keyboard paired, just paired a mouse (thanks Jolouis!), and all the other radio and mplayer functions that others have mentioned. Maemo mapper is fantastic, and thanks to the community I can update my repository links anytime Google might change them. Love OM Weather too. I've moved my boot to an SDHC card, and now have no problems with memory or storage. The only negatives are not on the N800 side - I can no longer bluetooth my blackberry for a cellular network connection (thanks Sprint :( - and if anyone knows a way around that please let me know), and I ran into a .pdf DRM issue with some materials I needed for a class (no Linux support at all). The N900 is already obsolete, and for me offered nothing except 200mhz more processing power - which doesn't get you much. I welcome any enhancements that allow me to make the most out of the 400mhz that I do have. I'll use my N800 as a near laptop replacement until I can get an N800 with more power!

Re: Why I keep my N810

Okay, geez. I use my N810 almost constantly. It is very very rarely out of reach. I use FuelPad to track my gas mileage, read many books using FBReader, games including Angband and Xword, use leafpad and xournal for notes. Sequetary for a calendar/scheduler, audio and video through MediaBox. The device never leaves my side...

Speed is the same as my home wi-fi and no limitations, blocked ports, or contract. Wi-Fi Access in more than 70 countries around the world (airports, hotels, coffee shops, etc).

You can use the boingo client to setup your account. After the setup, anytime your N8xx picks up Boingo wi-fi signal it will log on. It is a no-brainier as far as setting it up and using it. http://mobile.boingo.com/

The N810 does everything and goes everywhere! And I'm not paying for a cellular data plan to use it!

I use it every day and I won't reiterate all the apps others have said. I will add that my young children enjoy Numpty Physics, TuxPaint, Xournal & Sketch, Boxar, Theremin. My toddler even likes the last two.

I also appreciate all the community efforts to expand the devices' capabilities & Nokia's cooperation with these efforts.

Flash notification on built-in email client

Well, basically, all I did was go into the stock mail client, Accounts, New - and put the values in that Gmail says to use (Settings, Forwarding and Pop/IMAP, IMAP). I won't say it's point and click simple, but all you need to do is follow the directions.

Overall, it works well. Incoming mail will flash the LED (which is actually a good use for it), then put an envelope on the, what, task bar? Screen left, no idea what it's called. A tap on that and the email comes up, or a tap on the X and it goes away.

For basic mail, the default client seems good enough. It doesn't do much for multi-media, but text is fine. For some odd reason, it won't take a capital 'M' from the hw keyboard, on screen is fine. No idea why - works everywhere else, and yes I've mucked with the keyboard settings. But, I'm not a big emailer from the N810, so that's not a big deal. It's just really handy to just glance at the N810 to see if I have mail, see who it's from, and maybe enter a quick response. For anything bigger, I go to my desktop and fire up the gmail client.

The only annoying part is if I get an email at 4am and it starts flashing. The N810 is my bedside alarm clock, in Flip-clock (python version) night mode. That flashing light is BRIGHT, lights up the whole room - basically demands you shut down Flip-clock, clear the notification, and restart Flip-clock before going back to sleep.

David...

you can clear the e-mail notification by either minimizing flip clock or if the on screen mail icon is showing, just press it and x out the message. No need to shut down flipclock

yeah... I tried that... I'm still using the old Python version of Flip-Clock. Every once in a while, I go back and skim the Flip Clock forum topic to see how many people are complaining about stability of the new C version. Right now, I'll stick with the instability I know over the unknown :) Hey, I'm still using an N810 - so what do you expect? I stick with what I know ;) So, no minimizing for me. That's one thing I know fer sher. Exit and then restart, or you don't wake up on time  And I hate waking up, and like, wondering why it's so light, and then, you-know, why is there a 9 where the 8 should be... is that really a 9  Oh... Also, the N810 allows you to play Audible books, and the N900 doesn't. That is a big plus.

How do you read Kindle books? I've recently dusted off my N810 to do such tasks as E-reading and Kindle would be a killer app for me.

How have you been getting the Kindle books to work on the N810? I thought they were DRM-entangled...
