Unlikely reason, but do you have any applications installed from Extras-Devel or Extras-Testing application catalogues?
But anyway, sounds like a hardware issue to me currently...

I have same problem. Touchscreen won't respond, or responds sporadically, etc. Sent the N900 in to Nokia for warranty repairs. It came back working. I restored my previous settings from a backup, and now the touchscreen is working poorly or not at all. I can ssh into the phone, and have been un-installing apps to try to find the bad one. No luck so far. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot via ssh/root access are welcome.

I guess it should be possible to use x-term (ctrl+shift+x) to install VNC server, then make the backup remotely (haven't tried VNC on N900 myself though).

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

everyone with the screen problem-can you remember what you installed or did with the phone just before the screen started playing up?

no one wants to be specific as to why they wont just backup their contacts and send their phone in for a fix. is it because they have over 50+ of their own applications installed also? I wouldve just backed up my contacts in the knowledge that im going to be sent back a phone that actually works. If you dont want to lose or write down your installed frequently used programs, someone on here might know of a way to back up your entire phone, but then you might end up putting the screen annoyance onto a replacement new phone also (if that was offered under contract). if you have installed loads of programs, even if they arent from the testing catalogues, one of those might have caused the screen problem to occur in the first place. if this is the case theres always the chance that nokia might refuse to replace it. I try not to install too many-this is still a new phone, and many programs being released are in their early stages, even if they are not in the development/testing catalogues. there are bound to be loads of programs that may have conflicts with others or just the n900 that we just dont know of.

you should be able to back up your contacts easily by using the software cd that comes with the n900. I dont think it comes with the option of backing up installed programs, so writing down your mostly used applications might be the better option.. then send your phone in. if its a genuine screen hardware problem, sending it back may be the only thing you can do to get a fix.

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

My N900 developed a screen problem after a couple of months. The touchscreen became unresponsive especially in the top left hand corner. I sent the handset back, they said they had fixed it, but i think all they did was reflash the whole device. so i left the device empty ( with no apps on) for a while, and the problem came back. In the end, they replaced the handset with a new one, and this one has been fine ever since. Mine must have had a dodgy screen. Thought I would let you know what happened to me.

:mad:same unresponsive touchscreen troubled me. i did everything i could. uninstalled all doubtful applications, restore to factory setting twice. It all end up in vain. At last i just removed the protective screen and Bingo !! everything is fine afterwards. i just love this device so much that i just don't see any other alternative that can surpass it in terms of my priorities.;):)

Same issue and luckily fixed by removing the protective film. Very strange: the problem appeared suddenly while I was using the phone to watch a move in my TV and seems to be gone now, after three days struggling with it until I decided to remove the screen protector...

little_beat 2010-09-21 22:56

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Screen protector removal worked for me as well after I tried everything else. I guess the core issue here is that n900's own resistive film is very thin to achieve great response and that any protector is made of another material. Every time there is a temprature change any material changes its dimensions a bit. since the protector is thcker - it forces device's film to change them with it, which resilts in sporaodic touchscreen issues.
I stopped using screen protector and haven't had a single touchscreen issue since that.

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

I just suffered the touchscreen failure problem too, after 6 months of trouble free operation with a screen protector fitted.

Initially I blamed EasyDebian, as I'd just installed it and updated it with apt. However, even after leaving the battery out for 30 minutes and booting into NitDroid the touchscreen failed to work.

I was just preparing to reflash when I remembered this thread; peeling back three-quarters of the screen protector and smoothing it down again fixed it for me. The only problem I have now is several bits of dust behind the screen protector. :(

Thanks everybody for documenting your experiences here and saving me rolling back to a month old backup to no avail.

11ac9, if you're getting the click & vibe your touchscreen must be working to some extent. I suspect that the screen calibration is way off, so your clicks don't press where you're aiming. I'm surprised a reflash doesn't fix that.

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Hello Folks,

Its been 9 months since i have been using the Nokia n900. Since last 3 days I have experience the following problem.

Touch Screen is not responsive "most of the times". This was after the installation of Service Packs for "Flashlight and Podcast" Applications. It did work fine after the installation (I just sent an sms after this and went to sleep). However, next day the screen stopped working. Sometimes it does respond. But the response is erratic. It does not respond as required.

My efforts-
- Uninstalled all the additional apps, as i assumed the device was slow. No luck.
- Flashed the device, its back to the old look and feel. However, the screen is still behaves in an erratic manner.

Did anyone get this issue resolved by not sending the device to Nokia Support?

Any other suggestions?

Regards
Sweekruth

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

hmmm,

this is sounding a little familiar. i had a touch screen problem last week. it appeared that the whole top edge of the screen (where the window manager elements are) became unresponsive. I updated to PR1.3 and the issue went away (apart from a little blip later that evening).

My question is this, though: does flashing affect the warranty? do you need to be using the NSU to maintain the warranty?

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Hei,

got the same issue...touchscreen is broken.
Played Ur-Quan last night, then put the device away. It lost power over night. After plugging it into the wall to charge and then powering it on, the touchscreen didn't work. Or only worked in a very weird way, see below.

First i thought this may be a software problem (power-kernel and all that gear) and that maybe something went wrong software-side while the battery went flat and the device powered off.

So I tried reflashing the thing (both Fiasco and eMMC)...to no avail.

Since as i understand the flashing wipes everything in / and /home, it can't really be a software problem.

After flashing, i managed to start tscalibrate and it actually recognises the tapping, but sais: "Tap closer to point 1" or somesuch.

Also, i figured that sometimes if you hold one finger on the screen and then tap with another, it registers a touch, but only on the lower edge of the screen. This doesn't always work, though. And also the touch seems to be recognized in a certain screen area, only.

Likewise, if you hold one finger on the screen, and pull the 'touchlock' lever at the same time, it recognizes the touch. But, again, the touch is translated to the lower edge of the screen.

It seems to (sometimes) differentiate between the left and right half of the screen, but that's about as precise as it gets, if at all.

That's about all my findings...and i'm concluding that this is a hardware problem...probably not with the touchscreen itself, but either with the connector or with the controller.

I'm going to send it in under warranty, now.

mine has also become unresponsive but comes back to life if i swipe firmly with my thumb over the top right of the screen.

I have the same problem screen lights up however touch functions don't work. Would replacing the touchscreen digitizer help?

wyrfel 2010-12-02 07:59

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Ohh soo much fun....it was in service for a week. I got it back with basically the whole display window and frame replaced...(so they basically confirmed a warranty-covered hardware problem) and it worked...well...for half a day. ;-)

It's got two different issues now...
1) The touch screen often seems to miss the fact that i released the finger. It sometimes get's it 'ages later'. Bloody annoying...about as useful as it not working at all.

2) I seem to have never gotten the keyboard backlight activating in the dark ever since i got it back from service.

Due to some really strange behaviour of the touch screen i'm still wondering if this is a software issue or if it has to go back to the service again. However, it looks more and more like the latter.

What puzzles me the most is that both times (the first time where it stopped working almost completely and now after service) the malfunction started occurring around times where the phone ran out of charge and i powered it up again.

Bloody annoying.

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Uh oh. Just had a touch screen problem with mine today. Was working fine then I went on to look up how to get to a road that I couldn't find. Thought I'd try out the Geeps application and it just stopped working while I was using that. Thought 'ok it's having a dicky fit- I'll just restart and it will be back to normal', but after a reboot the touch screen just wont work. Sometimes It's like there is an invisible finger pressed on the screen somewhere, and if I put my finger on it then it kinda jumps around. I cannot get into the settings menu. I can sometimes manage to get a shortcut on the desktop pressed if I hold my fingers on the screen in a random position. The keyboard still works and the hardware buttons all still work. It's all very weird.
This is a replacement device too. Only had it about a month and a half since it got replaced due to the charging port falling out. I don't want to have to send it away for repair/replacement , and be without it AGAIN.
When I searched to see if this problem has occurred before to anyone, as well as this thread, I also found threads where people have had water /alcohol/ some other liquid spilled on it and then these kind of problems started. I haven't had it anywhere near any liquid, but I might try putting it in a 'rice bath' overnight, as this seems to have solved the problem sometimes in the water-damaged ones. Maybe the device I was sent by nokia as a replacement was a water-damage device that they thought they had fixed or something and the problem is just showing up now. Anyway- I will post up the results of that.

Another thing worth trying might be the screen calibrator thing, but getting that downloaded, and installed, then actually starting it will be a problem if the screen isn't working. I could try ctr-shift-x ( is trhat right?) and see if I can do it through x-terminal. Could anyone please put up the exact names of things I would need download ( the new screen calibrator thing) So I can just copy that in to x terminal please? It will be hard to find that kind of stuff without my n900.

bigears5000 2010-12-04 20:14

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

If the problem started when you were using geeps and you have only recently installed it, try uninstalling it. Just to see. Just an idea.

kyllerbuzcut 2010-12-05 01:05

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Thanks for the reply. I've got it wrapped up and in some rice at the moment and will see what it is like in the morning. I don't really think it's a liquid problem, but I suppose there is a long shot some moisture is in there from somewher, (from rain or something, even though I haven't had it out of my pocket in the rain), so am trying the solution for that first.
If nothing changes then I will have to get fiddly with the x terminal and perhaps try installing/un-installing some apps. I've had Geeps for a couple of weeks, but this was just the first time I actually got round to using it. I had also recently updated 2 things, which I can't remember now,in the morning.
It's still baffling how it happened. It's like there is an invisible finger pressing on the desktop somewhere, if I had to say where, it would be at the right of the screen, possibly 'off the screen' past the bottom right corner, if that makes any sense.

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Hi All

The touch screen on my N900 completely stopped responding yesterday afternoon.
I re-flashed it (both PR 1.2 and PR 1.3) but this didn't fix the problem.

I then took the phone apart and disconnected both the screen and touch screen ribbons.
I blew out all the dust and dirt and put it back together.

This seems to have fixed the problem as my touch screen is now nice and responsive again.
I suspect the ribbons either had a bad connection or some dirt got in there.

In hind-sight, I wish I'd done this before re-flashing my N900 as I lost all my files (couldn't press the "Mass Storage" button and hence couldn't back stuff up).
Hope this helps people. ; )

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

How easy/hard was it to take apart the screen? And would it be obvious to nokia once it was sent back that it had been opened?

akaoni 2010-12-05 22:12

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

It's not too hard, but the ribbons are quite fiddly. There's plenty of videos and articles on the web on how to do it. Just Google them.

I wouldn't recommend opening it if you're at all worried about voiding you warranty.

That said, a good start would be to minimise signs of damage. Make sure you use a good quality PH00 screwdriver with a proper handle and be careful with the screws so as not to damage them. Also, always use some thin plastic to pry things apart (special service tool, piece of plastic, guitar pic, etc.) as anything harder will scratch or damage things.

kyllerbuzcut 2010-12-06 18:46

Re: n900 touch screen problem!!!

Thanks- sounds like it might be easier to just send it in to get fixed/replaced. It's still in warranty and I haven't dropped it or spilled anything on it, so why not let nokia fix it. I just don't want the hassle of being without it again:(
Took it out of the rice earlier and it's still the same. Something inside it has gone. I wasn't 100% when I got this replacement in the first place. I knew it was a refurbished one, and that any of us that send things in to get replaced are just being given each others phones with minor fixes, so anything it had problems with before might come up again. It's really annoying that just when I was feeling happy with living with the slightly sliding keyboard ( it came like that- and it fixes the keyboard frame at the bottom whenever it pops out- might be some new "feature" I've not heard about)) - that it goes and breaks on me:(

UPDATE-

Turned it on this evening and ater initially thinking it was the same I swore at nokia and was about to go fill in the form to return it to be fixed. So, I wanted to try and get to x-terminal if I could and it just suddenly started working properly,
Weird huh?
The magical rice god has done it again. Thank you oh mighty one for accepting my technological offering and returning it anew.
