I bought my N900 a month ago. First think that made me feel I made the wrong decision was all the rumors about Maemo 6 and now.. Meego? :(

Lets hope N900 won't die this year..

Nokia needs some marketing assistance :(

Re: Maemo.org or Meego.org?

Are my "thanks" also ported to the new forum? Or this is step 4 of 5? *sigh*I wish my "thanks" were already in Qt 4.6.

(what a lame joke)

why are you buying (non-existing)future promises?!?!? if N900's price is something you wont pay from the device as it is right now, why?!?

Dunno how this is related to the topic but let's go again:
-Nokia stated that N900 is step "4 of 5". Or whatever that means, if you went ahead and bought yourself not much to cry here.
-Nokia mentioned since the beginning that N900 might not support M6 (now Meego)
-If you feel that you made the wrong decision with the announcement of M6 then your feeling is no different from the Meego announcement (they are the same thing as Ari pointed)

If with all of those details you even bought the device... Even with Nokia giving all of those "hints". Man, you should be a wiser consumer.

I dont care if n900 doesnt support M6/MeeGo. I love it! I rather be using Maemo 5 up untill the end of the year than symbian thats for sure!

Wait. Are you saying that Meego replaces maemo 6? So, won't we see a Maemo 6 device, but instead a meego device from Nokia?

On top of that, why RPM?

Nokia stated that the MeeGo announcement will not affect any Maemo 6 timeframes.

So does this reset Nokia to step 1 out of X ?... or is it still 4 out of 5?

It seems that these things still need to be decided, and it's part of our job to do so.

Re: Maemo.org or Meego.org?

To me, the big picture implication of all this ruckus is... well, remember all the criticism when the N900 was released and the responses to them? The responses (and I don't disagree with them) is that this was a new phone and it was just at the beginning, so cut it some slack!

I foresee ANOTHER period of adjustment and great excuses for problems. This has to be bad news in the short term at least for N900 users and worse news for N800 / N810 users.

For developers, it may be good or great news. Certainly there will be plenty of work to go around.

I secretly wonder (well, I guess it's not a secret now) whether Nokia is responding to its recent problems (see the stock market) by finding powerful friends, and may be daydreaming about merging, as an exit strategy, if necessary.

IDoes it have to be worse news for N800/N810 users? Maybe one of the possible results is that all of the Maemo 6 and future attention will go to Meego and some balance can be restored to this community for Maemo 4/5/Mer users.

Re: Maemo.org or Meego.org?

my vote still goes for maemo.org :D

dunno why...but the word maemo sounds very cute like a kid with speech impairment. while meego sounds like "amigo" or "may i go" or me ego = my ego...

can maemo just absorb moblin w/o changing the name???

I hope so, but will this community still be here? Under what name? I feel the rug moving under my feet... they can't very well have a site called maemo.org still, can they?

No, No, No!!

Damn... nobody told me when I was interested in the N900 that I'd have to update my bookmarks!

What is wrong with these people?!??! ;)

Yes, maemo.org can still keep its name. But fair to predict that many will move on and the community remaining here will be those interested in community supported Maemo 4 and 5.

I still use www.internettablettalk.com to get here on some of my computers.

Re: Maemo.org or Meego.org?

Part of the next Council's job will, with whatever community governance structure MeeGo forms, finding a way around some of these questions:
  • Does talk.maemo.org stay as a CNAME for talk.meego.com (possibly still run by Reggie with a new theme and forum structure)?
  • If not, who pays for the bills on maemo.org? Does it get adverts back?
  • What about maemo.org/downloads/ - strategically Intel and Nokia have app stores they want to push, but the TSG and CSG's will need to get involved in how the community distributes high-quality apps.
  • Similarly, what about the repos, autobuilders and QA for Maemo <= 5?
  • Does meego.com need karma? If so, is it based on the existing maemo.org stuff?
  • Is there a MeeGo Summit?
  • ...

Re: Maemo.org or Meego.org?

My votes:
* talk.maemo.org stays on for support of pre-MeeGo devices. Con: this makes tmo a graveyard. Pro: those of us who care about pre-MeeGo devices get what we want without dealing with MeeGo noise.
* If MeeGo.com has karma, everyone should start with a blank slate. It stinks for Maemo people to "lose" their karma, but if they don't they what will be done for Moblin migrants? Or will the Maemo folks just have way, way more karma starting out than the Moblin folks? :D
