Backup EVERYTHING??
Hi im looking for a way to backup everything.. including apps... I dont think the normal backup software does it...
Is there a way to backup/copy the partition which stores applications (is it rootfs?) and restore/paste it later on? or even on a different N900.. thx |
Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
the normal backup saves a list of installed apps - not the apps themselves.
so if you restore the backup you have to download all those apps again - but this is done automatically :) i can't imagine any other solution for doing a backup of all apps. edit: ok... you may be able to save all deb-files out of the archives-folder. but you'll have to update these apps anyways. so the backup-tool is (in my opinion) the best way. ^^ |

As for alternatives - you can use rsync to backup the entire system. Restoring it could be problematic though, as just overwriting all the files could cause issues with files that are in use. |

in app-manager you can click on the top bar and there will be a new point named "restore programs". if you click it, the list of apps you've saved will be downloaded and installed again. can't remember but i think there is the possibilty to "apply to all" or being ask for each program before installing. |
Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
thanks... is it possible to restore the backup in another N900??
because i noticed it wont let the user browse for the backup file... is there a specific directory where it saves it? and ONLY looks there for a backup? |
Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
the folder is named "backups" in your "MyDocs" :)

Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
what about my custom boot video, or status bar icons and things..would those be backed up? I know the theme itself will be backed up, but the icon files are not located in the theme folder so Im not sure

Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
i don't think these files are backed up.
many users who had problems after doing mods restored their backups and i think they only had the default icons afterwards. |
Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
Yea thats what I thought. I made a backup file the other day and it was 20mb, why is it such a big file if it doesnt save the actual apps? When I made a backup a month ago, it was only 4mb

Re: Backup EVERYTHING??
my backups also were at about 4 MB. now it is 32 MB. ^^
as my pidgin logs (stored as html) are about 20 MB i would think a big part of these 32 MB are the conversations i made the last few weeks. but it's looking quite too much for only some sms i wrote. *G* edit: looked at it with my ubuntu laptop: applications.zip -> 1,2 KB bookmarks.zip -> 203 KB comm_and_cal.zip -> 660,5 KB settings.zip -> 6,9 MB backup.metadata -> 682 Bytes unzipped: applications -> ~260 KB (/var/lib/hildon-application-manager/ -> catalogues.backup and packages.backup) bookmarks -> 192 KB (/home/user/.bookmarks) comm_and_cal -> 1,4 MB (something in /home/user/, /tmp/.rtcom-accounts/ and /var/cache and lib) settings -> ~30 MB (maaaaany things of /home/user ^^, /etc/osso-af-init, /temp/.maesync and /var/lib a few things) so it's very compressed :) edit: settings (the ~30 MB) contain: /etc -> 780 KB /tmp -> nothing ^^ /var -> 35 KB /home/user -> about 30 MB whereof 3,3 MB are settings (".$name") and the rest .purple (~27 MB whereof 20 MB are my pidgin logs) |
