Who thinks up these names?

There's the ipad. Well, we all had a good laugh at the Apple-fans over that.

Now they get their own back as Maemo mutates into something perfectly described by General Antilles as "Something Fisher Price came up with"

But giving good things stupid names has a long and honorable history. It was over 20 years ago I first encountered Pshit lemonade. (No, I never had the courage to try it).

To help us get over the pain of being forced to change our name in an arranged marriage here are a few other things that got misnamed.

Oh, and apropos of absolutely nothing, just because I feel stressed, another pic.

I'm simple enough of mind that Finast bath tissue, diapers, and canned hams always amused me. "My baby only wears Finast diapers." Yeah.

This is finnish product so it's not in that way so funny, but some native english speakers find it funny.

Potato chips.

And oh god Kettle potato chips are so good. I wish that we had those little bags in grocery stores here in Finland.

I'll do reversal of that, i.e english name that's only funny for finnish speaker. Actually sort of scary funny. Somebody save the kids. :(

This almost brang tears when I first heard about it. (no, not really...)

The operating system that I've only recently discovered it's true name (ever since my first encounter with OS2007, i always thought it was may-moe, not my-moe) is now turning into MeeGo?!

I guess you have to break some compatibility before making a compilation...

Don't forget Google! Luckily names don't seem to matter that much ;)

But we've forgotten the most important issue! Should Meego be capitalized or not, and under what circumstances?? There was an elaborate rationale for when Maemo should be lower-case...

Yes indeed:
  • Maemo: software, Nokia division that develops software
  • maemo.org: website, community that uses website

That scheme only required four or five graduate-level courses to understand though. We're developing something much more complex for MeeGo, I assure you. And we're not going to tell you the secret handshake either.

It's cool to print Chinese characters on bottles of Asian flavoured sauces. But I once saw a bottle of sauce in a German supermarket that I'd rather not touch. Without much research they chose the character for Death...

There's no way that FlopCulture thing is real... I mean, maybe at Spencer's or something as a gag gift.

Don't forget Chevrolet's Nova ("doesn't go" in Spanish).

Seriously, though, why not Mablin or Maelin or Moblo or anything but Meego.

Hopefully Mego has already sent a C&D so Intel/Nokia can reconsider.

I wasn't too keen on Mo-Blo... the verb 'to blow' has far too many possible interpretations, none of them quite what we're aiming for.

On a related note, what's with the army or surrendering beasties with their hands up? Is that Maemo devs capitulating over Deb? Moblin community's response to seeting hoards ot maemo.org?

Wait.. this MeeGo reminds me of a certain character in the in the star wars prequels that everyone hated...

Scary!

in the middle of the map: church of ballwax (Pallivahan kirkko)

but it is near Turku so it isn't so shocking. reminds me of one turku- joke:
How do you know that Icelandic people have sex with all mammals living in the Sea? From people living in Turku.

Re: Who thinks up these names?

Can we do that? Pressure Intel/Nokia that the name MeeGo is too stereotypical of certain accents that we're worried of racism calls and its repercussions???

I don't get it.

Anyway, we (as in Turku) also have "Twice" (kakskerta) and "Blowjobville" (Suikkila) :D

""Happy End" was already ridiculous, but I'm missing words after seeing "La Grand Finale" as a brand name for cheap toilet paper."

The full label name was bu si niao (不死鸟), but on the bottleneck they just printed 死. I think it was Lidl. They had it in their flyers, too. 不死鸟 (undead bird, Phoenix) makes sense, but 死 alone means death.
