Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

Is this possible?
I don't mean tethering i mean can i use my n900 to connect to my router and then ether via bluetooth or usb supply a computer with out network capability internet

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

that doesn't make much sense? - sounds like you are saying you want to tether it - but.... not using the n900's internet, by using a routers - passing through the n900.....

So a kinda wireless access repeater (But repeating on cable?!)

Lol i really can't personally think of any reason for that?!

I think the op is talking about a feature that some ADSL Modem Routers support. When the landline signal fails the router treats the USB port as the WAN. The end result is that equipemnt connected on the LAN side have an alternatte route to the outside world.

so not so much mobile internet - but more $500 spare router? :D :D (I'd go with the spare working 3g dongles, routers, or even a second internet connection is probably cheaper ;)

I am sorry if i was not very clear well i had a wifi usb dongle for my pc and that conected to my router but my sister broke it so i have been useing my n900 to thether to my pc over the 3g network but i only have a 1gb data usage and i wanted to know if there is a way or if it could ever happen that i can use my n900 as a dongle to conect to my router caues i would rather not get charged for going over my limit or buy a new dongle and i know this so sounds silly as a new dongle is only around £20 but if i can use m phone for free then i would do that

You could probably just use the sim card that was in the dongle in your N900 if you wanted to use that data plan. Pain is that you then loose the N900 for normal functions as normally the voice service is disabled on these accounts.

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

The usb dongle he's talking about is a wifi network card, just over usb instead of integrated to the motherboard. He wants to connect to his home network over wifi using the n900 as essentially a wifi controller for his desktop.

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

SIM cards have nothing to do with this.

Just rer-read and you're right - sorry peeps!

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

I would guess that it is the same as for tethering but connect the N900 to your local WiFi first. Might need some scripting if the N900 doesn't use existing connections and reverts to cell apn.

I'm in a similar situation. The N900 connects fine to the wifi network but is there any way to connect my pc to the wifi network via the N900?

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

In the discussion below I assume that your laptop is also running Linux. If you are running Window your are on your own.

The solution is two step.

1. Setup IP over USB between the N900 and your laptop.
2. Make your N900 route traffic from your laptop to WiFi.

I have been trying to do something similar, make the N900 use the wired ethernet connection of a desktop at a site without wifi access, but still without success.

I managed to do the step 1 above as follows:

On n900:

ifup usb0
route del -net 0.0.0.0 gw 192.168.2.14

On Linux desktop:

/sbin/ip address add 192.168.2.14/24 dev usb0
/sbin/ip link set dev usb0 up
/sbin/route add -host 192.168.2.15 dev usb0

You should now be able to do a couple of "route commands" to instruct the desktop (or the n900 in your case) to forward ip traffic coming over the USB cable. But as I said I haven't got it to work.

Thanks! It's a work PC I'm trying to get it to work on (with a frustratingly flakey internet connection that they don't seem to be able to sort out but with a different WiFi network available that seems to be fine).

I'm afraid that means it's running Windows XP.

Re: Use N900 as a Wireless dongle

Theoretically its possible, but I am not sure the N900 has the correct software to configure it to tunnel data in this way. Getting the N900 to use a PC for Internet access it most certainly can do, doing the opposite is quite different however.

Also bear in mind Wifi adapters are only £10.99 and possibly pick one up even cheaper on eBay.

If this is a work network, then the services available over the Wi-Fi network might not be the same as the ones you can get over the wired network. E.g. the Wi-Fi network might not let you log on directly to servers or use network printers. So you're probably better off trying to get them to fix your wired connection.

You might be able to via bluetooth DUN? Not a good method I know, but if your desperate...

That's true but if I can do it with a device I already have in my pocket (whilst charging it as well) and without spending any money, that would be nice.

I hadn't considered that! Although shouldn't it be fine if it's connected to the wired network (for printers and the exchange server etc.) and the WiFi network (for internet access) simultaneously?

Then I'd have to buy a bluetooth dongle :) I would probably be just as well buying a WiFi one I think.... nice idea though.

It will depend on how your network is setup, so you'll need to ask your IT people.

I like the idea, sometimes i do actually know people who end up in this situation,

But i couldn't even get tethering to work over the sim card haha.!

I also tried getting PC suite to use the N900 as a modem. You can only do it via the SIM and that didn't work for me either.

Ovi Suite tells me that the N900 is not supported.
