Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

Hey all,

I have successfully installed the new firmware today, and I just tried playing Flash video (on youtube) for the first time on this new firmware and it seems extremely laggy and also made my N900 get pretty warm after watching 2 videos (about 8 mins total).. (Due to high CPU use?)

Anyone have the same issue as me?

Anyone have noticed a new issue with this new firmware update?

The reason for me creating this thread is because I want to see if others are experiencing the same problem as I am experiencing so we can take action accordingly (open a new bug?)

Thanks in advance,

P.S.: I have ran into the "Internal error in 'Web' Closing application" a couple of times this morning after I updated but now it seems fine.

P.P.S: The battery also drained pretty fast after I watched the videos (again due to high CPU usage?)

P.P.S(1): I never had any issues playing a flash video before this update.. Definately didn't experience the things that I mentioned up there..

YouTube works very great on my device with the new Firmware.....

Maybe something else was causing the lag on your N900

 That's weird.. Well is there some other solution other than reflashing?? I really don't feel like reflashing the firmware then re-download all the apps that I have right now! :(

That was my second guess, so the new firmware breaks a program that has to do with MicroB somehow?

Go to X-Term and do before test

killall gst-video-thumbnailerd

The sluggish video may be because of bugs 8165 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165) or 7147 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7147)

Vote for it for faster fix.

EDIT: do before test too:

kill `ps | grep mafw-gst-renderer | grep -v grep | cut -f2 -d' '`

(space between two quotes).

Mine was really sluggish after the firmware install. I shutdown and turned phone back on and it was normal after that.

But what's weird is that I never experienced any problem before this last firmware update.. So when I had the firmware 2.2009.51-1 I had 0 problems with flash videos (at least not in youtube)..

Hmmm, I am going to restart my N900 right now and will try it out again.. My phone got restarted before, but maybe restarting it again will do the trick? Not sure.. *Trying right now*

EDIT: Nope unfortunately it's still the same thing.. And my N900 is getting warm pretty fast when watching a flash video... Like it's been now 2 minutes since I started the video and the N900 (going from being cool) is now warmer than usual...

You put a lot of files into N900 since last FW update, right?

True, but what I meant is that even with those files I put on the N900 (on the firmware 2.2009.51-1, with those files) it ran fine.. I didn't experience those problems..

egoshin 2010-02-17 02:31

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

If that doesn't fix - you may need to reflash N900. Last update somebody had a similar problem and it turned out some missed control script in /etc after some installed-and-removed application which got out of control and restart and restart again. It may be the same with flash.

Oh, one more thing - try to remove flash directory from user home. (I don't remember which one... put it later)

EDIT: rm -fr /home/user/.adobe /home/user/.macromedia

EDIT2: rm -fr /home/user/.fmp_pause_thumbnail (and reboot)

Do you mean /home/user/.adobe/Flash_Player?

EDIT: Never mind I just saw your edited post.

EDIT2: Did what you told me and now I rebooted the phone, going to test the flash video out in a min.

EDIT3: That seems to fix the problem! Thanks! :)

Don't worry - I clearly see that bugs in your description. Actually, I suspect the same problem in both bugs - memory leak in SGX accelerator library + poorly designed video stack control but rules are rules and it were filled separately.

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

ok i couldn't install the firmware right away so i had to make room.

first i had to download rootsh

then in xterm i put each of these lines in one at a time

i think i had to type Root first for them to work

mv /usr/share/tutorial-applet /home/opt
ln -s /home/opt/tutorial-applet /usr/share/tutorial-applet

those didn't do anything because it couldn't find it or something

then i did the following

mv /usr/share/microb-engine /home/opt
ln -s /home/opt/microb-engine /usr/share/microb-engine

the first line i think moved it and the second one let me know that it exists?

anyways that let me install the firmware update....however

i ended up with a full cpu load the entire time, i had to reboot 3 times and it finally is normal.

BUT, my problem is that my web browser doesn't work at all.

anyone know why and how to fix it?

EDIT: It just ramped up full CPU again when i connected to WIFI...when i disconnect it still stays at full

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

ok i have some more information about my problem, i downloaded HTOP and it shows 2 identical processes far as i can tell anyway, it doesn't really show the whole name.

but here is what it shows

/usr/sbin/browser
/usr/sbin/browser

i think they keep disappearing and reapearing, one of them shows 100% usage and the other is around 60% if that makes any sense lol

and this is with everything closed, so yah

and this is draining my battery QUICK, i have a full battery about an hour ago and now im less than half

Move microb directory back and reboot:

rm /usr/share/microb-engine
mv /home/opt/microb-engine /usr/share/microb-engine

EDIT: but it may not help if update installed something to /usr/share/microb-engine ... you may need reflash.

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

The official Media Player, which is the only Media Player I use for now has been completely made useless following the latest update.

Any file I may choose, video or audio, stored locally or over DLNA, will not play.

Once I choose a file the pause button appears, just as if I had pressed play, but nothing happens. It stays at 00:00 and when I try the other buttons (ff/rw) it says "unable to perform action".

In effect I am left with no manner of listening/viewing my files and it's quite frustrating.

I guess I can wait for the next big update but that's not really a solution.

PS:MediaBox plays files fine (Save XVid, ever since PR1.1, I think the codecs were messed up?)

Does using gstreamer on the commandline work to watch the videos?

Sorry, I have never used cmd on Linux. I don't know the switches and syntax so please be more specific in your instructions so I can try it out.

Problems in connecting to wifi access points??

Yestarday I wasn't able to connect to my home-wifi, since sometimes it doesn't work (problems with the dhcp server) I've thought it wouldn't be important.

However, today at work I'm unable to connect to the wifi of the department, and I have troubles to connect to 3G (you need to insist).

Does anyone else experienced these "problems"??

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

This is clearly a problem with the Media Player application, for me at least. I seem to have no issue browsing or using Wifi otherwise.

barc0de, have you had Subtitle support installed? Uninstalling this app causes problem like yours. I had to install it again to fix mediaplayer.

Re: Firmware 3.2010.02-08 new issues?

Yes, I did have subtitle support installed.

I uninstalled it in an effort to open space up in rootfs, no idea what files are optified really.

Where does the subtitle support reside? in rootfs or somewhere else?

What happens when PR1.2 comes around? Will the Subtitle Support (or lack thereof) be an issue or do the files get completely replaced?

PS: Indeed, playback has resumed back to normal following the re-installation of Subtitles Support. The question remains as to what to do in preparation for PR1.2

There's a thread about Subtitle support: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37410 Unfortunately the author of this application doesn't seem to replay recently. Subtitle support is like a trap for me: does not work properly, but I can't uninstall it.

i had wifi issues. i have a dir-655 router and my n900 didnt work in a wpa2 only mode. i to set up the wpa2 cipher to aes instead of tkip or aes/tkip. there seemed to be issues with my wifi on n900 until i changed to settings on the router. if that is not doable then add the access point from the settings menu and dont check wpa2 only mode. hope i help.

Now it is fixed, or it appears. I've uninstalled some programs, the only one that could have any implication, the macchanger program. After all nothing changed, but with a reboot now I'm able to connect. Perhaps a simple reboot would have been enough ... we'll never know muahahaha xD

Thanks, and God save the n900!

i think i got a situation here also after updating, when i try to browse the web on my phone after a few minutes it gets warm and suddenly reboots.. when i try to access "top" on the terminal i can see that i have only around 3500kb of free memory.. but the cpu usage is less than 5percent, rootfs has around 65mb of free mem.. so i dont know whats happpening.. reboots only happens when i try to browse the web.. any body knows how to fix this?

Well, yesterday i did the firmware update... Last night went to bed with a full charge and guessing that the battery lasted about 5-6 hours, As i got an emergency call from work and they state it went right to voicmail in the early morning... Definantly the update as i reformated my phone just monday and have no apps installed.. exept for personal ip and bounce... Any one else notice the battery perfmance..... UPDATE.. Well today its fine.. I am guessing there was a rogue process from the update eating up the Bat.. Lesson learned after a firm update check the processes and make sure nothing is eating up your processor.... I need to get used to my phone as a computer hehee.

I had some problem with subtitles support in past and I decided to remove it. Author actually wrote somewhere that after removal of very first version of subtitle support it is needed to force reinstallation of gstream renderer package. I did it and checked that all remnants of subtitle support were deleted.

So, I suggest you to run in root shell (X-Term) the following -

apt-get install --reinstall mafw-gst-renderer

AFTER upgrade to PR1.1.1

Try this - http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=531241&postcount=5

That bugs cause the uncontrollable growth of gst-video-thumbnailred which processes in background your video files and after it grows to 120MBytes the kernel starts swapping it and so, an so...

EDIT: radiowc, actually it has sense for you to do the same. Frozen screen after call - it is a clear sign of bug 6605 https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6605 which is with very high probability has the same reason as bugs 8165 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165) or 7147 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7147) - growth in memory one or both video renderers.
