Am I the only one who'd love to have meego.org, not .com?
I know this has to be very low on everyone's priority list these days... but I have to admit that honestly, while others fight deb/rpm-wars, the one thing that really bugs me about MeeGo is its .com domain.
With Maemo, it was very nice to have both maemo.nokia.com for the part that was directed by corporate interests and maemo.org for the community stuff. It made sense to have it this way. It's a signal. It shows who you are. MeeGo's signal is .com. I wish we had meego.org. That's not gonna happen, though, is it? Somebody either doesn't understand what TLDs say - or the TLD was chosen on purpose to say just that. |

I agree and don't undertsand the choice at all, unless there was a squatter on meego.org. Altough with Intel's and Nokia's combined resources even that problem would totally trivial.

Create a poll. I'll vote.

Hey, could this be a reason to ditch the 'Meego' handle as well, then. That's a win-win!

everyone from the not-maemo-world is now focussed on meego... I like it with lower letter but don't like it as MeeGo... |

I just hope we'll have a meego.org eventually. We shouldn't go com. (Oh.. Can't we register weego.org for the community? guess not.) |
Re: Am I the only one who'd love to have meego.org, not .com?
it bothers me too.
before deciding on a name, they should have made sure the domains are available and buy them. especially when taking into consideration that meego is an openly developed project a .org should have been a priority when deciding on the name. i'll take this opportunity to mention that over the past few months i became very devoted to the maemo brand (almost tattooed it on my forehead 8-) i'll have real hard time letting it go, and moving from maemo.org to any other website. i know quim already opened another thread on the subject (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=44977), but i'd like to suggest: maybe meego.com will be the more commercial site (like maemo.nokia.com) and maemo.org will be the community part behind meego? that way we could all stay here.. at home. maybe later the theme / logo can be change to say "maemo / meego" to suggest support for devices still running maemo. this idea may be stupid or problematic, but i thought, why not raise it. |

I don't care. As long as the OS is free and open the domain shouldn't matter.

They had a problem with http://ubuntu.org (Anecdote: the owners are related to Barcelona and they asked me whether it was worth contacting them. At the time it was a big deal. Didn't seem to stop the project's success, though. Nowadays (and since a long time) nobody cares. I've been bothered about the .com in meego.com about 5 minutes. That is the time I recommend you to spend on this. :) |

MeeGo is a (truly terrible) neologism made by focusgroups and marketeers who apparently forgot to check the web-address situtation. That's my five minutes spent on the matter. |
Re: Am I the only one who'd love to have meego.org, not .com?
I believe a shift to a .com site is actually for the better.
Maemo - and soon MeeGo - is not a community-developed, open sourced OS created to provide a free alternative to larger, commercial products and that intend to further enhance it with community developed applications. Maemo - and soon MeeGo - is a corporate developed OS created to, initially sell Nokia tablets and phones, and soon a number of commerical products. The OS is enhanced by free (I don't know if the OVI store apps are free or not now and/or in the future) applications developed by a community. I personally think that a .com would had been applicable for maemo and certainly will be for meego. |
