Skype videocalls on N900
 

Hi.
I wanted to ask is it possible to make video calls from my skype account on N900 to another skype account? If yes how can I do that?

No, not presently. Maybe in future or maybe in third-party software.

As far as I know only Fring allows you to do so. They pulled it from the store a while back BUT it's back again!

I think they have it exclusively for the time being. I saw it today in my app manager *you might need to enable extra repositories)

I see, than I will need fring for video calls.

One more thing. Is it possible to just turn on secondary (front) camera?

im not sure with the skype.. but i already tried the gtalk.. and it works fine...

How can you have video calls from the phone anyway? :S I mean won't you have to connect the headset and hold the phone in your hands during the conversation? Isn't that a bit difficult? ;/

The N900 has a hands-free function which works very good. You don't necessarily need a headset then, but e.g. in public transport, you probably don't want the other party to blare out of the speakers of your phone. :D

But what about plugging the tv out into the nokia, placing it below the tv and being able to have a video call with your family if they're thousands of miles away in your lounge? The mic may not be great though... Still would be awesome.

Can you even think of another way to do videocalls with a mobile? I'm pretty sure there isn't one.

you can do it over sip as well if you specify h263 only for both ends on an asterisk box.

Hit the camera button during a GTalk call. Has to be supported by the other end as well though.

That's good news! I didn't know that was possible, I wonder if that means I can do a SIP call to another N900 and get video calling too? If anyone has tried this then I'd love to know.

not sure, i don't have 2 n900s to test with :) Send me a pm with your sip address and some way to know if you are online and we can try it if you want

The N900 front camera works fantastic with Gtalk. Your friend can sign up to Gtalk for free and so are the calls. If you need to do video with your N900, this is the way to go.

The call and video experience was nothing short of spectacular.

Google Talk video calls work if the web client initiates the video call (must install extra google software for it to work) but you can't initiate a video call from the N900

There's an app called "Mirror" that will activate the secondary camera in stand alone mode.
