Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Hi,

we all know the default media player lacks an EQ.

I have a pair of westone UM2 headphones. They were pricey. They are really clear but the bass is on the weak side. I fact, the stock n900 headphones are sounding better than them right now.

I need a music player with an EQ. I have tried Canola and Media Box but so far nothing..

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Sennheiser IE8 here, and yes default player sounds really tinny even with them and im in no way a basshead.

You just have to wait a little for proper EQ to emerge or buy a cheap Fiio E5 portable amp for 20$ either way the amp will make your westones sound a lot more like they should.

The Fiio E5 is very small so nothing you will notice in your pocket, will give better mids and cleaner treble and it even got a bass boost that work without sounding bloated.

Thanks,

I just found one on ebay for reasonably cheap. I'll give it a try.

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

I listen with a pair of Yuin PK1s, and I have no audio quality issues.

A band equalizer is something of a misfeature. Are you sure the problem isn't with your source?

I don't think the UM2s are particularly high-impedence, so you shouldn't need an amp.

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Equalizer is a compulsary part of music playing if you are an audiphile.
Every earphone/headphone sounds different. So you need to match it.

I hope that PR 1.2 or PR 1.3 (I hope) will enable equalizer support for the media player or other music players to use it.

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

It's a matter of opinion, however I think that if you feel the need for an equalizer and your source is near-reference, then either there is a problem with your equipment, or you don't agree with the way the artist mixed the track.

An equalizer would be a nice feature, but it would really need to be implemented as an optional output filter, to avoid degrading performance.

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Actually have you guys given the Nokia headphones that came with the device a go? I spent $200 on a pair of Sony Headphones last year that I *thought* were awesome. I chucked in the ones that came with the device, and there's no comparison they're awesome. The bass is nice and clear, as are the mids and the tops are nice as well.

they're just... really clean sounding. haven't heard more from my songs with any headphones I've owned. I think it's something to do with how far they go in your ears.

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

You must be new to IEMs? (in ear monitors)

A good pair of IEMs ($100+) will provide you with more detail than most $400+ headphones.
You should definitely try RE0 or Fischer Audio Eternas for the biggest bang for buck. (and quality close to the best you'll ever hear)

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fischer-Audio-Et...item19ba2631b0

those the ones dude? looks good... could you compare them to errr to the buds that came with the n900?

I was thinking about getting some sennheiser closed-back big studio 250's but they're too big to carry around. When I said sony headphones before I had these (mine were black, therefore much cooler) http://www.crunchgear.com/2007/05/17...arbuds-review/

and I swapped them for the ones that came with the n900. I was shattered but I like them so far.

I think I'll get some of these audio eternas if you sell them to me one more time :P

Yeah. They are the ones. They are cheap (under $100), looks simple and are practically unknown to everyone. (It's a Russian company)

But they sound amazing after some break-in. Here's the review from the oracle. (Well, maybe he's not the oracle but close enough. lol)
Look at the sound quality score it got. Compare it to the most expensive IEMs. (Triple-Fi 10 etc) Eterna was his more recent review also!
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/r...a-love-450772/

I am also one of those who try out every earphone I can get my hands on. I've had $200+ Shures, UltimateEars etc. But really, RE0 sound awesome. Bit lacking in bass but the highs. Oh my the highs. The detail. The Eternas are more all around. My friend (also an IEM-phile) prefers the Eternas over RE0 as well. I currently use an even cheaper and lesser sound quality SoundMagic PL-50 just due to its miniscule size and comfort during commuting.

See his complete roundup here:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/m...ogress-450407/

These passive noice cancelling IEMSs are great. Small, discrete, comfortable (if you get the right fit), no need for loud volume to hear finer detail and does not disturb others around you. Even in a library. :D

UPDATE: I just tried the IEM earphones that came with my N900 for the first time. This sounds like a typical cheap pair of earphones. Bass is way too bloated and muffled, mids and treble is drowned by it. Sound stage is very cramped also. Treble is there but details are lost. Mid is too far back. It's not the worst, but it's no where near even the entry level decent IEMs. But seriously, many people are used to this kind of sound. So to many, this actually might sound good. Even though it's not...... Personally, I would not be using this earphone ever again.

I wish it was but I don't believe it was ever ported. :(

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

As for me I would love a eq for using bluetooth audio on my car receiver. I use a Sony Bluetooth car receiver and I have the N900 connected to it on auto pilot which is really, really nice. As soon as I step close to the car it connects. Anyway the sound over the receiver is lacking considerablable and car receiver won't let you make any changes from the receiver, all the changes must be made on the phone itself. Only thing you can do with the receiver is turn up the volume. So a eq would help out a lot as the sound is hollow. I use Nokia Bluetooth headsets as well and they are perfect. They support audio as well as telephone calling and the bass is perfect. But the car receiver is the problem. Maybe I just need to buy a better car receiver. Too bad Nokia doesn't make car receiver's, haha.. Or do they, hmmmm. The car receiver is nice as it cuts off music when receiving a phone call and has a built in mic so entire phone conversation is using the car receiver's speakers and mic so phone is never touch but only to answer the call and hang it up, but I just let the other party hanbg up and the phone will hang up by itself and than resume the audio. Very nice as I play the internet radio this way as well as the music on my N900. But the internet radio doesn't sound too bad but the music on my phone just sounds hollow.
Also is their a program to auto answer your phone cals. That way I wouldn't have to touch the phone at all while driving. It would be completely handsfree for real. But at moment I have to touch it to answer a call.
Anyone else using bluetooth car receiver's??? When I had the Nokia N97 it had a built in eq so I had no problem with my car receiver. Problems, problems and problems...

I did not know about this... Thank you....

I just installed it. Installed all its dependancies also. No issues.
But I have no idea how to set up the equalizer. Is it done via some file? Hmm.

Ok. I'm now following the release notes. Need to edit gconf. Got it.

I'll have a play a bit later. =)

What do you mean you can't install it? I just downloaded the file from garage, used dpkg -i filename.deb to install, then used apt-get -f install to correct and install the dependancies. All installed fine without issues. I haven't tried modifying the eq but the media player still plays music just fine so I know it didn't make it any worse yet. =P

lol. just realized. Thanks. :p

UPDATE:
- OMG. This is a godsend. Just what N900 was most lacking in the music player department.
- The equalizer works great. Definitely makes a noticeable difference.
- Makes my cheap Soundmagic PL-50 IEMs come to life in the higher frequencies.
- Maybe the Control Panel Eq gui can look a bit nicer? The icon needs to be changed also.
- Anyways, this is a must for any N900 music listeners imo. Very happy today. :D

My media player is gone. How to get it back.I've used these commands--

sudo gainroot
dpkg -i mafw-gst-eq-renderer_0.1.2009.47-1-1mgr_armel.deb
apt-get remove mafw-gst-renderer

Have you rebooted after it?

BTW, for those who got errors during install, run the following: (does no harm)
apt-get -f install

oh. and shouldn't something like this have it's own [Announcement] thread???

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Yes I've rebooted

"dpkg -i mafw-gst-eq-renderer_0.1.2009.47-1-1mgr_armel.deb"

this command gave me a error

"apt-get remove mafw-gst-renderer"

this command removed the mediaplayer

Then I tried this
dpkg -i MyDocs/.documents/mafw-gst-eq-renderer_0.1.2009.47-1-1mgr_armel.deb

and it was sucessful
the I rebooted
No media player

Okay. Seems the remove command should not have been run while all dependancies weren't installed properly for the mafw-gst-eq-renderer. (hence the error during initial install) For you to go back to the beginning, reinstall the default mafw-gst components via following:

apt-get install mafw-gst-renderer mp-fremantle-generic-pr

How I did it: (the right steps)
1. dpkg -i mafw-gst-eq-renderer_0.1.2009.47-1-1mgr_armel.deb
2. apt-get -f install
3. apt-get remove mafw-gst-renderer
4. reboot

Re: Are there any Music Players with an Equalizer?

Install MediaBox :D (seriously, it's much better than the regular media player)

So does this only affect the default maemo 5 media player or does it EQ everything in maemo 5 including 3rd party media players and whatnot?

Obviously, it's failing to find mp-fremantle-generic-pr package.

Make sure you are connected to internet on your N900.
Then run:

apt-get update
apt-get install mp-fremantle-generic-pr

If that fails, just download it and install it via dpkg from below link:

Do I need to register there before downloading? If possible give the direct link to the .deb file

Hmm. It seems that package is not on the repositories anymore.
I think the only way you can get it back is if you relfash your N900.
Unless someone has the mp-fremantle-generic-pr.deb handy.
