N900 firmware flash on Vista

has any other maemolites had success flashing the N900's firmware on good-old Vista??

I downloaded the Flasher3.5 tool and the latest firmware RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin, put them in the same directory, booted the N900 in flash mode (by holding u and plugin in the usb) and ran the command

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -r

as instructed from the various guides available!!

But sod all happened, Vista asked me if i wanted to run the program, I said yes, then the terminal flashes and goes back to the command prompt.

I also tried running the flasher program in all the available compatibility modes to no avail, Im guessing ive done a real n00bish mistake.. :)

Did you run the command prompt as administrator? I think that's the key.

Thats right,

Click on windows ICON, type in cmd, once the terminal icon shows, right click it, choose run as administrator. I absolutely hate vista.

Read the advice here:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware

specifically this thread:

I had the same issue. Finally had to use Windows XP PC.

I've tried flashing in Vista without succeding. It couldn't recognize my N900 as a supported device. I think it's an issue with my usb-ports.

Anyhow, in the wiki it says to "boot with unsigned drivers" in 64-bit Vista. That might work, if youre running that version.

EDIT: Lol. Same time, same advice. Ps. I flashed with XP too.

really?????

I don't think I'll bother then, although making an Ubuntu Live CD sounds like a load of fun :)

Maybe when I've got more time and patience :)

should the last r in the command text be a capital (R)

Re: N900 firmware flash on Vista

Make sure to put .bin at the end of the firmware version name. Vista misses it off if you just copy and paste it into cmd.

all the guides ive read say its a sub r, the only capitol is the begning -F command..

this is really bugging me, not because I cant flash the N900 but because its just not working when it should :(

Only works on a 32-bit machine, it seems. I had to install the WindowsXP Mode for Win7-64 in order to make it work.

Kinda cool, actually.

Re: N900 firmware flash on Vista

ok, flash complete, i had to borrow someone xp machine for 10 minutes :)

the difference is amazing, i dont know whether its the new firmware or because ive gone from 203uk to global, but damm my N900 is zippier and all the hangs and problems i had before are no longer there, one was the video camera recording jumpy vids.

any uk users should flash with the global firmware

what suprised me the most was that i didnt loose any media, all my movies and music were still intact after the firmware flash, my backup sorted out my programs and tit-bits. so the whole procedure was preety darn smooth.

i likes :)
