Email problem driving me crazy: can't send email
I received my N900 from Vodafone last week, and am gradually falling in love with it, and its overtaking my N95 in my affection, which I thought wasnt possible!
BUT..... I just cannot get emails to send I've read every thread possible, have spent ages on the phone to vodafone, and have been into the Vodafone store. Vodafone are sending me a new sim card as they think this could be the problem, but the Vodafone store tried this yesterday. The only difference after they played with it is where you have the option to edit smtp settings I now have 2 boxes for contract WAP where I previously had 1 and one for my Be Box - home wireless. Today vodafone said that they have had some problems with their send.vodafone.net, and to keep trying, but I find this hard to believe. I have tried 2 different email accounts, both receive, neither will send. They start to send, then say failed. Its imperative I can send emails for my job ! I've tried Hotmail, and my work email is through 1and1.co.uk Yahoo doesnt even set up at all, but I'm not too worried as easy enough to get from website, but my work email webmail takes forever to load and is a huge page. any ideas anyone? Please be gentle and explain simply, although I'm quite teccy a lot of it goes over my head! |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
on 3G and on wifi same problem? Wonder that wifi has probably nothing to do with vodafones connection.
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
I have 1and1 working just fine using Imap on vodafone
outgoing email server is auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
I havent tried, I'm wireless at the moment. I will try with it turned off - I sort of thought that was why I needed to set smtp for wap and wifi and tick for all connections
I'm having another go now, should I tick secure authentication and secure connection, its defaulted at none currently, should I change it? |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
sorry, I meant tick 'use connection specific smtp servers'
should I tick this, or just leave it? I'm sure on my 95 it was send.vodafone and it worked through wap or wifi, but maybe I;m wrong |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Hi Mike,
I set it us as pop, maybe this is a problem, I will try it.....so you use auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk, not vodafone setiings? |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Quote:
secure authentication is not checked. just for ref incoming server is imap.1and1.co.uk port 143 outgoing port is 25 |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
still n luck and actually worse now as I have no incoming mail, will go back and try again and do pop and auth.smtp ......
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
looks like the pop and imap are okay. I use 1and1.co.uk
may be worth checking the settings they have on the site. usually the username will be "name@domain.com" for both incoming and outgoing authentication |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
I might not have a solution, but a problem as well so you might want to check if you have the same setup.
I have 3 IMAP accounts configured and ICan access and send mails from my office wireless. I also can send and receive mails over wifi at other places. Only at home it does not work. As soon as I switch too 2g or 3g it works. The strange thing is that I can use the same account on a Samsung jet 8000 witthout problem over wireless. Only my N900 does absolutely nothing when IClick on send and receive. It is not like it is trying to conect and is throwing an error - no - it is doing absolutely nothing. IAm using a D-Link DSL 2740B what are you using and does the mail work over 2g or at other locations with wifi? RegardsMarkus |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Thanks Ozen
If nothing else I have learnt that there's a few 1and 1 users! I have reverted to pop, and have incoming again. I've checked their settings and Mike is right, its auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk When I try and send I'm now getting a message saying unable to connect to smtp server.....and that is with wi fi switched off with wifi on it just says failed Maybe there's a clue there somewhere as to what's going on? |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
works on mine with wifi
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
maybe we could swap phones?
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Hello, I use streamline for my business email and I have to ensure that when using 3G, i use for outgoing email: send.vodafone.net
Then i need that setting for different smtp for different connections as I have to use my streamline one for when i use my home WiFi or in your case: smtp.1and1.com. any use? :) |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Wes ok, I'm going to try that......
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
dont suppose uv used mail for exchange and pc suite sync have you. ive read about people with problems sending but not recieving emails after syncing both. some kind of conflict. cant offer any idvice though sorry but could that be your problem?
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
fingers crossed. i checked the VF settings and the 1and1 settings in terms of smtp addresses so i hope it helps. but to be honest, i spend a while sorting mine. i say a while, it was onlt a few hours but far longer than my n95! but, now it all works, i find the email so much easier than the n95!

Re: email problem driving me crazy
I set specific connections, send.vodafone.net for wap, and auth.smtp.1and 1.co.uk for wifi......
still failed I think I'm going to go to bed before I throw a beautiful phone out the window! |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
unfortunately mail for exchange doesnt work on n900, and dont even get me started on pc suite!
I tried using that recently and it told me to update to Ovi and after god knows how long downloading it, said its not compatible I should have kept my 3310, never had any such problems! |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
i hear u dude, syncronization is the n900s biggest downpoint at the mo.hope u resolve ur problem though may the force be with u
|
Re: email problem driving me crazy
although failed means username or pw wrong would it be easy to borrow a router from some to test at home? or reset router and try? just an idea.
do same settings work with pc? |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
Hiya, I know this doesn't exactly fit your problem, but I just wanted to voice that I've had a similar issue (likely a different problem) and throw this story out there in case it helps anyone else.
When I first got the n900 I tried to set it up using exchange from gmail. This resulted in email coming in, but nothing going out. I thought, "OK, no problem, I'll just add gmail as an IMAP account and use that for sending". This did not work, still the same problem trying to send email, even though I was trying to send from the IMAP account. I took it one step further and disabled email sync on the exchange account, so then I was just syncing calendar events from gmail and using an IMAP connection for sending and receiving email. STILL wouldn't send! I tried using both IMAP to gmail and Nokia Messaging with my gmail account, and no emails would send until I deleted the exchange account. How I finally got it working: I used nueva sync to check my gmail calendar, but set it up on nueva sync that my account used an email address different from the one I intended to send email from. (Nueva sync checks XXXX@gmail.com for calendar events, but on the N900 the exchange account name is YYYY@gmail.com) I combine this with a Nokia Messaging connectiont to my gmail account. (XXXX@gmail.com) In this way I've got MOSTLY-reliable push email, and google calendar sync. It was a frustrating problem, and I'm still not sure what the exact cause was. J |

Re: email problem driving me crazy
L's & G's
one solution that i have tried (i didn't have a problem setting up, but rather connection msn & yahoo) i used ovi mail which i was using on N97 with all my accounts now for my main email, setting it up wasn't an issue but it took a while for it to retrieve all the emails (including my anti-christ junk folder.....i hate that folder :D) so if you are not paranoid about hackers jumping ovi database and seeing your pictures when you already were silly on a drinking rage of a night go and see if you can get an ovi account then you can link all your accounts to it from the website then once you set it up either wi-fi or gprs you'll have to cross your fingers and wait for all your emails popping out to life |

We need some more information here, but first I would suggest that you change the thread title to be more specific like "Cant send emails via oneandone in UK". That way you get less unhelpful stuff on this thread. so more info -what contract do you have with Vfone? -How are you setting up your email on the N900 (as you keep refering to wap etc, this makes me concerned that you are not using the wizard correctly)? - Does surfing using wifi work (you need to get email working with wifi first before you mess with vfone)? -what kind of account do you have with 1and1. They offer both exchange hosted and standard webmail with pop and imap.? -what email client are you using on your laptop? -what are the server settings on your laptop (maybe some authentication/security issues as this is your work email) And here is how I have setup mine using Imap4 -Create new account->wizard comes up->tap next -do NOT select service provider leave as "other" -create account name like "one and one" ->next this next bit is important as oneandone use email as user name user name=mike@your domain.co.uk password=your password email-address=same as user name ->Next -change account type to imap4 incoming server= imap.1and1.co.uk secure authentication=unchecked secure connection =none ->Next outgoing server =auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk secure authentication =unchecked secure connection=none use connection specific SMTP servers =unchecked ->Next ->advanced settings port (above outgoing sever) =143 port (above use connection specific SMTP servers) =25 ->save finish It should now be able to find the imap server. now you need to set up you email behaviout go to the email screen that shows your email accounts ->press top window bar that says "email" ->settings default account=choose your pref new message format=choose your pref updating autmatically=checked update when connected=any connection update interval=choose your pref Good luck, and if you have no joy provide above info and we can see if we can trouble shoot some more.Otherwise its over to your IT department. |
Re: email problem driving me crazy
well, its sort of fixed...... and I feel quite embarrassed! Actually - change that to very embarrassed
while out and about today I thought I would try and send, and it worked.... then I noticed a different symbol by the battery status, clicked on it and it said contract WAP so when I got home I tried again, emails wont send unless I disconnect wifi and set it to WAP thats fine..... at least I have a solution and can send BUT my next question is how to get it to send when connected to wi fi I'm with Be Broadband, does that mean I need their smtp settings ? Or should I just quit while I'm ahead and leave it as is? thanks so much for everyones responses, and maybe I can help others in future by asking if they have a wap symbol by the battery notification...... |
Re: email problem driving me crazy

Re: email problem driving me crazy
As you can see, because 1AND1 rely on auth to prove who you are you should be able to conenct to the internet by any means (VODA/BE) and get it to work. If voda is set up to allow only users who are dialled up to vodafone, you have to switch to vodafone internet to send mail through their server..
Quote:
SMTP is simple mail transport protocol. It accepts a mail for delivery, and if the user is not local, the SMTP server connects to another SMTP server and passes your mail to that server. That server might not be the destination server either, so it will in turn, connect to its upstream server and pass the mail on.. Eventually it will find its way to the destination. We thus run into a problem of security and identity. Suppose you are on a LAN at work, with its own SMTP. It is chained that all traffic not for one of your colleagues must be sent to the ISP's SMTP. In turn, that SMTP will connect to the destination. You want to write to a hotmail buddy; you connect to your work's SMTP, send the mail, disconnect, the work's SMTP connects to the ISP SMTP, sends and disconnects, the ISP SMTP connects to hotmail, sends and disconnects. The hotmail SMTP delivers to the local user Why didnt you just connect straight to hotmail's SMTP, claim you were from work, and cut out all the middlemen? Because the hotmail SMTP cannot be sure who you are, because you arent registered as a mail exchanging authority in global DNS (the whitepages whos-who phone book of the internet). It will think youre a spammer and reject you. So, when youre on wifi, youre on Be broadband, youre conceptually part of Be's LAN and they put your traffic out on the internet. If they route your connection attempt out to vodafone's SMTP it might just reject you immediately because youre not a registered mail exchanger, or it might let you get as far as "send the following mail to mymate@hotmail.com" at which point it will say "hang on, youre coming in from a foreign (Be) network I know nothing about, youre not one of MY users, and you want me to relay mail to someone else? Go away, spammer" Ergo, you have to prove who you are.. You either do this by authenticating.. I.e. you connect in from Be, but before you make the mailer send mail you say "hi, i'm actually cortina@vodafone.net and I can prove it because here's the username and password for the account" OR You connect to the internet via VODAFONE, and then become part of VODAFONE's LAN, i.e. youre inside the "walled garden" so youre trusted automatically In summary: Either, you have to use the mail server relevant to the comapny providing you with internet service, or you have to authenticate or you have to do both And mail servers can be configured to require one or the other or both.. So maybe if you connect into vodafone smtp from BE, you will NEVER be allowed to send mail even if you auth because thats how the server has been set up. Or you might have to auth even if you connect using vodafone.. Ideally the administrator of the mail server can tell you this, but the "connection specific smtp servers" options relates to this notion of being inside the walled garden and using the relevant smtp for that garden. Some companies like 1AND1 dont provide internet access, so you cannot become part of their walled garden (you cannot dial up to 1AND1 and get internet through them) so you'll have to authenticate with their servers A server may be set to require auth so it knows for sure who you are, instead of relying on the trust that you claimed to be cortina@vodafone.net (you could be someone else, deliberately signing cortina up to spam viagra lists) See http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html for more info on what your access point settings should be, and what the mail server settings are for vodafone IMAP and POP3 are mail collection protocols and are nothing to do with sending mail. Sending mail is always handled by SMTP. IMAP and POP3 typically require authentication regardless of whether youre in the garden or not, for security and identity reasons |
Re: Email problem driving me crazy: can't send email
nice lecture cjard but we are no further forward, email on my e90 and 6303 just happen, i don't understand what nokia are doing here.... i am running 4 emails, 10 plus wlans (excluding public)and subscribe to tmobile..
to my bodge job for getting around SMTP (sendind mail) problems for first email account: set up new account, next; selected service provider- nokia massaging next; enter email add. and pw all should be done for further email accounts set up new account, next; selected service provider- nokia massaging next; enter email add. and pw next choose 'create seperate mailbox' all sould be sorted... if u look in advanced email setting u will find that there is nothing in the 'smtp' box. do not enter or try to change, otherwise u will have to start again... occationally u may be told that there is an error in your setting, "ignore" or u will have to start again... however mail is not updated in the mail server... COME ON NOKIA GET IT TOGETHER... |
