Nokia is under pressure from Silicon Valley

"Nokia's chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo concedes the Finnish company is under pressure.

"There is no doubt the center of mobile innovation has shifted from Europe to Silicon Valley. We are working to tap into this innovation," Kallasvuo told analysts earlier this month. He said Nokia had installed more than 3,300 employees in North America to redress the balance.

When Kallasvuo took over as CEO in 2006, he announced that a top priority for Nokia would be to improve its performance in the U.S. market, but success has been elusive. Sales volumes in North America plunged more than 7 percent in the last quarter from a year earlier to 3.8 million devices, which does little for the company's image in the region."

So for you "Silicon Valley" = "iPhone"?

Anyway, good luck with this discussion. Moving it to General.

would seem he / she buys only apple and thus sillicon valley must mean apple. no idea what the other business's are doing there inthe apple state.

Re: NOKIA concedes iphone superior............

The overall article is not disputable, but some details are:

Quote:

Innovation is where Nokia has faltered, experts say. After much hype, its N-Gage online game flopped. And it's been slow to catch on to market trends, from folding "clamshell" handsets to phones with sliding tops and touch screens. It was forced to quickly ship models with those features to markets.
N-Gage was first a gaming hardware platform, then a software platform, not a single game.

And Nokia did not lag with sliders. I think most of us know who made the "Matrix phone".

You'd think an analyst would get his details right, given that info is just a click away...

yeah installed imployees. Employees are like software or applications. Due to Nokia is short in applications for N900, its installed more than 3000 more employees to Maemo5 to boosting the amount of installable item in Ovi Store and Repos. lol

This is hillarious!

And I owned a 7710 (a touchscreen Symbian phone) - before the 770 tablet was released.

But, I've lived in Silicon Valley, there is a lot of innovation there (here - I still live only a little north of the valley proper).

Apple is part of it, but they are not the whole. And there's a reasonably large Nokia facility right off the 101 highway which runs between San Francisco and San Jose (and beyond).

And, a large Evil Empire (sorry, Microsoft :)) campus in Mountain View.

Kinda picky Texrat, N-Gage was a flop, and the "matrix" phone, wasn't a slider in terms of today's sliders. yes, it had a slidy bit, but not a slider form factor.

You sir are dumb.. And in fact everyone like you is dumb.. How many times do people have to say that the N900 is NOT Nokia's flagship phone.. Sadly, the N97 is their flagship phone!!!

Still doesn't explain why Nokia should treat the s60 owners any better..

And you call me picky. A slider is a slider. ;)

And yes N-gage flopped in every incarnation, but the writer should still get details straight.

He would have said Cupertino...

I think he refers more or less at the general influence US companies have had in mindshare lately. Off course, mindshare != marketshare != cash (see Palm), but oh well, sometimes is too much to ask for decent journalism this times.

guys...both apple world headquarters is here in cupertino, and goodle headquarters is in mountain view.

there is your iphoney and andriod phones os's

they are bith silicon valley.

another company that had a lot of face here is danger (tmobiles sidekick) but they were bought by ms about 3 years ago and inhoused. (which is also in mt. view)

nokia did have some buildings in sunnyvale, which are now empty, and still have some offices in san francisco, but they are just some software geeks.

also, symbian is right here in rewdwood shores which is where oracle (amung other big companies) has thier head quarters.

should i also add that EA is also in redwood shores.

nothing would say that this is reference to apple when all 4 of the major OS developers have a major foothold here.

oh...and i missed palm....but that is an honorable mention.

He says he has a real job in the states, so if that were true, that would make him at least 18. But most people that are in need of this much attention are usually still in diapers. So, I'm not sure. He seems more like 16. If he's not lying about the job thing, then I'm guessing he doesn't get enough attention there either.

If he does have a job, I hope it's one where he can't do too much harm, because making leaps like the one in the thread title shows a lack of some basic logic skills. If he does have a high station, my guess is that nepotism or cronyism was involved.

I don't know what Nokia's up to, but I can say that at one point when my old department was short on space for student workers, we discussed rack mounting them. They were a reasonably fit bunch, so 6RU each probably would have done the job. Their rackable depth was an issue, of course, but one of the students volunteered to amputate his own legs in return for a 25¢/hour raise.

You really only need the torso, with head and hands, and you can mount 'em horizontally.

I'm not an expert on cell phone history, but I remember the N80 being one of the first, if not the first, slider in the US.

when I first got it in 2006 (and paid $600 bucks for it might I add) people were amazed at how a keypad slided out!

I'm referring to where the article points out Nokia is slow to catch on to trends like clamshell.

Yep, that was the idea. About 6RU for a torso mounted horizontally, with the head and arms out the front of the rack to reach the keyboard and mouse.

Our director vetoed the plan though, so we moved on to working out how to fly a second level of desks and chairs from a grid. No where near the density of student coders permitted by the rack system, but more "humane" I suppose.

(And yes, our director axed the suspended work areas plan too. Something about potential falls.)

In my opinion N900 is much more superior than iphone.

About moving to sylicom valley I see more like a consequence of the merging of movilphones industry and computer industry.

But it is very nice that nokia knows where they are. I think that it made them the number oe and it will do them stay in the numer one!

Re: NOKIA concedes iphone superior............

To get back to the OP's link, it's an article well worth reading. It is not US centric and stresses Nokia's global lead in both the software (Symbian) and hardware arenas. And as far as the OP's post itself, Kallasvuo was the one who said Silicon Valley was their competition and Nokia has been talking about needing to get into the US market since the CDMA lawsuits were settled.

The Kallasvuo quote I was struck by is: "I see great opportunity for Nokia to capture new growth in our industry by creating what we expect to be the world's biggest platform for services on the mobile" i.e. a focus on the Ovi store. More and more, it seems that both average and intelligent consumers are focusing more on the capabilities of phones as defined by the apps available as opposed to the OS or hardware.

LOL, the Japanese have actually implemented similar strategy for their 'transportable units' in capsule hotels...

It's just a matter of waiting land costs to go up a bit more, before we see rack-mountable salarymen.

All decisions are based on politics and if, as Machiavelli said, politics is power and, as Kissinger said, power is the ultimate aphrodisiac, then we can conclude that Nokia's decisions are all based on the pursuit of hot Finnish girls.
