[Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

good morning everyone ... I open this topic to say I am disappointed with how nokia is treating the N900 users...
how is it possible that at this point we still do not have an official msn messenger for nokia n900 and we need to use external and defective applications ... I have the phone since November and we still do not have this application which is so important today? ?

Well it is possible to get working MSN by now. I doubt Microsoft has any intentions on releasing a full fledged MSN application on a competing device. As far as I know there does not exist an official MSN app for any linux device, desktop or mobile.

no pdin sucks....and why we have to use third party apps ????

we bought a huawei phone or nokia ? WTF

Sorry, but you bought an open linux phone. Feel free to use what ever you want - one of the best features of the N900. If you want to use only preinstalled or "official" software you bought the wrong phone?!

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

one of the reasons that i bought nokia and not other brand is that i want to use only Linux and its applications

i found pidgin very good and i am satisfy except the smiles that they are small and is hard to select them. I would prefere the smiles of sms

is it possible to install other Linux msn clients as kopete or kmess ?

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

how are the MSN protocol plugins for conversations app flawed ? (I don't really use "MSN", the plugins work really well for connecting with the people who refuse to see the light of sane and open protocols like Jabber [GTalk is actually Jabber]).

My main problem with MSN as a whole is that the procol is very data hungry which makes it power-hungry as well (If I keep only Jabber accounts [2] online vs Jabber plus MSN I get significantly longer battery life).

The plugins are available in the default repo, as for using only "official" apps, definitely wrong platform...

Edit: just a note I use Adium on my desktop/laptop (again it has more than enough of MSN support for my humble needs).

Edit2: Someone might make "official" (as in OVI-repo, probably paid-for since the OVI QA costs money) MSN client but I doubt it since the free alternatives available directly in the enabled-by-default extras repo are enough for almost everyone. (OTOH I've come to understand that all kind of inane crap for the iPhone sells like the proverbial hot cakes so maybe I just don't have any business-sense)

I use the MSN Pecan conversations plugin on my N900.
Works great. Integrates fully with my contacts also.

MSN is a Micrrosoft product. Please contact Microsoft customer support and ask them to port their application to GNU/Linux so you can run in on your Nokia phone.

@rambo - do you find a big difference in battery life for jabber vs msn(pecan)? i find that the battery drain on pecan isnt significantly worse than jabber

@osmelg - you represent the 0.0001% of N900 users that would prefer to use the official microsoft messenger rather than any alternative. write to ballmer...

Actually, it's the opposite. Of course, it depends on the implementation, but on avg. to comply with protocol requirements, MSN eats less than Jabber (bandwidth wise) and has fewer beacons that will constantly wake up the connection.

But out of them all Skype is the worst, we'll have to wait and see whether they'll fulfill their promise to trim-down their protocol.

Bingo. I don't think you'll find an official MSN app on any device (but Windows Mobile).

Try with Gaze, it works perfectly unlike the Pecan which couldn't even log me in. The only problem with Gaze that I've experienced is handling messages from users with status 'Appear offline'

You are probably right, I forgot that I usually have skype on with MSN as well and Jabber only is well, Jabber only...

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

question is very valid. Since Microsoft does not support linux, there will be no official live messenger for n900, period. Having said that, Pidgin is NOT the best alternative. Its the most stable of alternatives so if you want to use msn on n900, use pidgin. Best linux alternatives for live messenger are kmess and emesene and unfortunately none of the gurus have tried porting it.

thanks to the awesomeness of microb, live messenger can also be used online @ http://webim.live.sg/

I wonder how MS would respond to an ever so polite request for a port of their apps.:D

Unfortunately none of them support MSNP16. I don't believe any non-official clients or libraries do. I'd like it for MPOP.

ahh thx for the info.

"It features "Multiple Points of Presence" (MPOP), the ability to sign in at 2 places at the same time with having chats replicated at all places."

thats how skype works. and thats how it should work if you just have a laptop/desktop and a mobile like the N900.
Skype just does that exactly, Google talk doesnt :(

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

Off course this is just my stupid opinion. But in my eyes pidgin of butterfly is just brilliant!
IM's show up in the Inbox widget, you get nice notifications, you got a very clear contacts list and IMdisplay and its integrated with your contacts(so if you want to text someone but you got a small dataplan its always nice to find out that you can also chat with him instead of spending your SMS).

Only problem could be a too long contacts list, but who cares? You type 1/2 letters and you found your man! I did the same before using pidgin

How cool it would be if you could select to view only IM-friends and vice versa? Of course you can view it by selecting the group but having it as a automatic thing would be awesome (maybe switching between groups by moving your finger same way you can skim thru pictures?)

I had installed haze and it used to work fine. I disabled it a while back, now trying to reenable it and it doesn't work.

Any of you guys know what should I do now?

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

Microsoft did release an official MSN messenger for the N97 didn't they? They took their sweet-a** time but after several months they did. I don't think Microsoft has much problems with competing cellular devices, it's just really not a priority at all But now we are talking about an official competing OS. Microsoft's prime little baby is Windows, and i HIGHLY doubt they would develop apps for Apple OS or Linux. Is there an official Windows Live Messenger client for Debian or Ubuntu?

felipec 2010-03-14 13:38

Re: [Maemo 5] Want official MSN client, not third party alternatives (was: n900 users)

Also note that there are different releases of msn-pecan. If the one in extras doesn't work, try extras-testing, we need more votes to move that one to extras.

Skype just does that exactly, Google talk doesnt :(

Jabber/GTalk works just fine with "MPOP" (multiple resource ids), I often have at least N900 and either laptop or my home desktop on-line with Gtalk (in some cases even all 3) and initial contact goes to all of them and then depending on where I reply the conversation continues (I see no point of replicating the whole conversation in all of them).

The main problem with this is that if I forget my home machine on-line and I lose access on the N900 for a while (like in train, happens intermittedly) or put it offline for purpose I can miss convesation starters.
