You say that like it's a bad thing! I'm impressed almost as much with your ability to pull this one off unnoticed as I am the hardware performance!

Did u have the simpleWidget note installed or running?? cos when i have that on my desktop, i will be like you, my battery died in just couple of hours even when not used, But after I removed it, my battery back to normal....well it is just a suggestion.

Err, actually I didn't say that I am having battery issues. The loading of the hardware invovled in the OP's post is quite heavy with the radio usage for any hardware.

Personally I get around 12-14 hours out of my handset on a single charge with WiFi and 3G running too.

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

Mine lasts about 6 hours avg with 3g running (no desktop widgets, bluetooth off) - and running an hour of IM. thats it.

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

I've got mine upto around 18 hours!!
  • Moved the facebook widget off the homescreen
  • Set brightness to level 3
  • When at home on WiFi I switch off the cell and use tablet mode
  • Switch off Bluetooth when not in use.
  • At night in bed I use brightness 1
  • I have an external GPS on bluetooth - more accurate and doesn't eat the phone battery.

I am using this a lot, playing with apps, downloading and updating things all the time, surfing, etc. etc.

Granted I'm not using the phone too much, but I do a lot of SMS.

Fully charged at 8am, it will be down to 20% by 10pm.

The facebook widget was the big battery killer for me.

"an hour of im"? You mean you set yourself offline after an hour? does that even work?

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

lol indeed it's not a bad thing... don't think my diamond lasted anwhere near that long, also didn't get hot at all like that used to.
think maybe a dc-11 type thing might be needed for when i'm away from a plug for longer.

how did you mabge to post the same message 10minutes apart form each other?

my bat last from about 10-12 hours. some times its less sometimes its more depending on my use. i did find the first day of use the battery went in a few hours. this disappointed me but then improved say after day

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

I got increase from 10-15H to 30H just executing two commands in root shell:

echo "1" >/sys/power/sr_vdd2_autocomp
echo "1" >/sys/power/sr_vdd1_autocomp

Interesting, it looks like sequence has matter - I tried it in past but started from last week I occasionally set /sys/power/sr_vdd2_autocomp first, before /sys/power/sr_vdd1_autocomp and it produces this dramatic improvement. The setting sr_vdd1_autocomp first improves only around 30%.

I test it around 1.5 week and it created me now some (pleasant) problem - in the morning (after 24H) the battery still keep around 1/2charge now and I need to bring a charger to work or recharge it anyway. I hesitate to recharge it in 1/2 capacity ... just knowing the battery lasts longer if it is recharged after it comes red status...

Disclaimer: this trick may cause your N900 unexpected crash and reboot - it is not debugged well yet by Nokia. But try it and if it doesn't - you can be pleased.

mine lasted with more than 8 hrs.. with wifi enabled all the time, widgets running(facebook, foreca, and etc) played angry birds too( finished all the levels now =]) listened to radio and did web browsing..

Im just curious why on other ppl, the battery life doesn't last for more than 5 hrs even they are saying that they dn't even use it.. hmm... well, im lucky..

Another trick - keep one of four screens empty and keep phone on it while you don't use foreca, facebook etc. Because then you unlock the phone any widget on active screen starts working and some of them (like foreca) communicates via Internet and that consumes your battery.

EDIT: and if you use magnetic case (like me) then magnet may occasionaly switch the keyboard switcher while N900 is in case and phone think that you open KBD.

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

I've found that the worst thing I can do for battery life is constantly moving in and out of wifi range. If I stay on GSM, battery life is pretty decent. If I mostly stay on WiFi, it's even better. This is without turning either of the radios off entirely.

When I was working in a warehouse that only had wifi coverage to about half of the place last week, I'd be switching back and forth 20 times a day, if not more. I'd get about 20 hours out of it, with pretty light usage. It was pretty much dead by the time I got back to my hotel room with only 20 or 30 minutes of talking and 10 minutes of web browsing and 10 minutes of IMing.

When I got back home, where I'm on WiFi almost all day, I left it off the charger for over 30 hours before it started complaining of low battery, but that was also with light usage. Maybe an hour of calling, a bit of emailing, a few text messages, and a bit of IMing. I can usually get 16-20 hours out of it with more normal usage when I'm on WiFi all day.

I only have the calendar and several contact widgets on the home screen I normally leave active.

mine last 24hours -> 36hours each charage on normal average usage like light browsing and constantly connected to the internet, SMS, Photo, Video capture, Email checking, music playing for 2 to 3hours. Video playing 20mins. and 30mins of gaming.

Last me 15->18hours on mild web browsing and constantly on Wifi, SMS...etc like above,

Last me 6->8hours with very heavy web browsing, email, video playing, music, gps, recording, Radio, watched a few youtube videos, music, and 30mins of gaming.

Last me 4->6hours on Extreme heavy web browsing + youtubing, GPS and playback videos

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

mine lasts for 20 - 24 hours

changes:
-no active widgets on desktop (apps that connect on the net)
-using 2.5G signal (for the whole 8 work hours and 2 school hours)
-wi-fi only at home
-brightness set to 1 (i like it better when dark)
-unchecked all boxes on setting > location (GPS)
-minimized rebooting as posible
-enable "power saving" (disables all options along with it)
-backlight time set to 30secs
-notification lights not active for "device on" and "others"

activities:
-2-3 hours of mp3 music
-online using 2.5G signal up to 10hrs straight (browsing, im, etc...)
-1 hour of games
-less than an hour of calls, 20-30 sms/mms

(on weekends with no school and work, power lasts for 8 hours, applied the changes above)

It enables SmartReflex power saving - see https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?...ltiple&id=7633 for details

Actually, Li-Ion batteries prefer to be recharged early and often.

I sit in amazement at mine... i charged it 2 nights ago overnight have used it on the first day for light internet use and about 6 phone calls and numerous texts,
Is switched off overnight then back on yesterday morning and used for the same...
switched off last night back on this am... i still have 3/4 of a green battery full so judging on it's currently use i should imagine i won't need to recharge till tomorrow night :0)
The bettery life seems to be getting better and better of course i only have wifi set to always ask and make sure when i'm not using it i've swtiched the wifi off :0)

Perhaps it would be even better if you didn't switch it off, and you just used offline mode.

Did you add these commands into a /etc/event.d script or some other place so that it is executed automatically? I would like to do that, but I am afraid I could brick my device if this is executed too early..

I already answered in another thread, but to put the information also here you can edit the powermanagment settings in /etc/pmconfig instead of running the commands on startup

Re: battery lasted 5 hours!

I charge my phone at 21:00 each night or so, and 3G connection is continuously on.
During the day I work, so usage is very minimal.
It's to say that I am impressed that when I chatted for nearly 2 hours on it the battery finally gave up at around 18:15 giving me the "red" status.

My brightness is set to the near highest setting.
Not to mention that I have GPS positioning enabled as I go online.
I was also installing and testing different MSN plugins too and also switching between them during testing and thus logging on and off all the time during those two hours.
Meanwhile, Xchat (IRC) was running as well with about 7 channels open.

Now that I am writing this post, I notice that I keep losing track of perspective when it comes to battery life on devices like this.
I was disappointed at the time when the fun was over after "only" 2 hours of chatting.
And yet, if I would attempt the exact same scenario with my Nokia N95 (which has a smaller screen with less pixels, slower CPU etc. to boot) it would not even come close to all this performance on one single charge.
