N900 Abroad - what features can I use?
 

Sup!

I live in the UK, am on o2 with my n900 and am off to Austria tomorrow for some snowboarding action.

Question is, i dont wanna use my data intensive n900 and get spanked by the operator for doing so!

So, can i set the internet to ONLY connect via wifi? If so thats good as the hotel has wifi!

But what im not sure about is GPS - is there anything I can do with the GPS/maps to kinda see where I am on the journey or anything - WITHOUT it connecting to mobile web and taking half my year salary with it!! I still dont quite understand what features use the GPS and what uses the internet

You can set n900 to use either just WiFi, Data, any connection that is available or ask you whenever it needs connection. Go to Settings->Internet Connections->Connect automatically and then choose WLAN in your case.
For GPS again in Settings->Location and under Network positioning uncheck the Enable check box this will disable positioning using data/WLAN connection and internal GPS is used which takes quite sometime to get lock and from what I have read in this forum it is advisable to enable the Location desktop widget from the edit mode by going to Add widget coz the maps application gives up looking for GPS fix quite early so you need to turn on the Location widget which from what I have read looks for 5 minutes.and needs to keep turned on again until you get the fix.

You might also look into the maploader to sideload Austria maps onto your device if you are moving around at all. At a ski resort I doubt you will do too much travelling around though.

thanks but it says ive connected a phone without a valid map drive or sumin! ive tried in usb mode and pc suite mode?

I guess you haven't use the Map applications at all. Before you download map to your device you have to first, at least, start the map application. Doing this, it will create required folder etc, etc to your device, then you can download the map to your device.

hmm ive used ovi maps before! ive used it in my car to get from A to B so i would have thought the right folders were there!

Maybe not a direct answer, but when I was in Austria a few months ago, I bought a prepaid data sim (t-mobile, 10Euro for 500MB). If you forward your calls from your o2 in the UK to the Austrian number, you can still accept calls, and it usually comes out cheaper than roaming charges,

Ok, then I'm not sure what's going on there. You can searh this forum for "map loader n900" coz they have released Map Loader for N900 or may be follow this link if you are using Windows XP: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ding+maps+n900 or atleast go through it.

Help: Need advice. My N900 is on a T-Mobile account in the U.S. I am travelling to Austria (Vienna) in a few days. I want to continue using the N900 without getting billed an arm and a leg in roaming charges from T-Mobile. So, I assume I need to get a temporary SIM card in Austria. Is this correct? Can anybody recommend any particular company and/or SIM card to use in Austria? Will I still be billed for any roaming charges and/or any other additional costs, aside from the cost of the SIM card itself? Should I set the N900 in any other ways to avoid any additional charges? Will the temporary SIM card allow me to use the N900 for telephone, internet, and texting?

One great thing is that unlike Android devices, you should not have to worry about constant data pulling. I have seen many a horror story of four figure Tmo bills after returning from a trip. Even when people turn features off, some apps reopen them and run up data roaming fees :eek:

That assumes there are no Maemo apps that replicate the same issues with Android.

Alternately, you can buy the data SIM that Matan mentioned and some skype in credit so that your callers can call a UK number and you don't pay expensive international call rates. Otherwise if you can live with outgoing calls only (don't pick up when thry call and call them back later as you will see who is calling you), you can simply open a skype out or SIP account. Most cafes and hotels have free wifi so you can use that to make cheap calls and won't need any new sim.
