would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

if nokia would offer a hw upgrade package with
upgrade lcd to amoled
upgrade resistive to capacitive touch
replace stock stylus with a stylus for capacitive touch...

would you pay for that?? if yes... how much??

To make stylus unusable?
No, thanks.

Nope, stylus is must.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

It has nothing to do with multitouch....

What about being able to use the phone with gloves? ;)

The answer: NOPE

Stylus requirements depend on your usage patterns. Some apps can do without just nicely, some don't (I'd say you're not an Easy Debian user, eh ? :) ). Do not assume that everybody uses the same apps and in the same way you do :)

No. .

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

nope wouldnt pay for such an 'upgrade'
the upgrade i would pay for is:

256mb extra internal mem
256mb extra internal rootfs flash
dual core cortex a9

then hardware wise it would be pretty perfect!

No, I love the Touchscreen

+1

Also, being able to fold the screen in 45 degree intervals would be neat, so you could put it on a table and tilt the screen 90 degrees and watch stuff on the screen.

why do we discuss about this ? is this possible to happen?

@dimkit

why not?? forums are made for discus, speculate and asking for the thinking of other people.... or am i worng??

@ attila77

nope i m not using easy debian.... but i want to.... can you tell me a link for a tut how to install that?? and yes i dont worry about bricking my device beacause i know how to reflash it....

not for the N900 ofcourse
but i just pointed out what i would like to see in my next device.

i think n900 has just really 2 things that should have been different (256mb extra mem and rootfs flash) and the cortex a9 is just what i would like to see in a next device

currently i think it suffers from just to little memory (has to use the slow flash as swap to early) and rootfs is a very well know problem, if that was twice the size then we wouldnt have all these rootfs discussions here (optifying is still prefered then also ofcourse)

Capacitive styluses aren't as accurate though.

Switching to capacitive would only an "upgrade" for certain purposes but certainly not for something like rdesktop or any other app with small icons and text on the screen.

What they should really do is put a capacitive layer over resistive so you get the best of both technologies. Resistive input can turn off when capacitive is in use and there could be a setting to switch to one type if someone so chooses.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

is it possible to repartition the 32GB storage so that it would have 25GB user memory and 7GB rootfs?? (example)

or have rootfs its own storage chip??
if yes is it possible to make an empty partition on that 32GB storage and redirekt it to rootfs....??

not interested either.. the screen and stylus is one of the things i like most about this device.. whenever i use an iphone the screen drives me mad as i generally use my nails or the stylus on the n900..

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

No, I wouldn't pay to downgrade my N900.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

amoled yes, capacitive no. amoled as the colours are apparently richer and its easier on the battery. i could care less about resistive vs capacitve. i find the resistive screen works perfectly for me!

would pay for an upgrade to stantum resistive multitouch though. stylus would still be just as good.

MohammadAG 2010-03-06 15:34

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Personally I think capacitive is a downgrade (for me, not starting a flame or whatsoever), it's just too oversensitive.
Multitouch is something I haven't seen the use of, except impressing people around you and I'm not that type of person, plus if it's essential to using the OS then one handed usage will be harder.

SD. 2010-03-06 17:13

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Multitouch is better for on screen keyboards I think.

Without it you need to lift your finger completely to input the next letter.

With it, the next key you press can start firing off immediately while your still pressing on the previous key, much like a hardware or computer keyboard would.

Agreed ... i would upgrade anything that helps out the battery lol ...

maybe the title of this post should be:

will you trade in your N900 for a N910 when its released?

since most of these update are sure to be in the new device.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Sorry but the stylus is completely useless when you have pinch to zoom capability. No question.

So to gain pinch to zoom I would absolutely upgrade to capacitive. Upgrading to AMOLED is always worth it too.

Don't agree at all - IMHO pinch to zoom is a flashy UI gimmick and is realy form over function.. admittedly it does LOOK very cool but when using websites not rewritten for mobile the use of the stylus is far more useful to me than pinch to zoom would ever be...

This would be good due to the impact on battery life but the n900 screen is fine as it is in every other way...

IMHO effective multitouch gestures has a lot of merit on a handheld mobile device, primarily because you can potentially represent multiple types of controls simultaneously (pan, zoom, tilt) without having to switch between the modes.

Moreover, when you're comparing it against stylus control; both of them already involve tying up both your hands on manipulating the UI.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

@felbutss, you sound worse than many iPhone fanboys here. The OP didn't mention iPhone at all and getting a capacitive screen was actually on Maemo 6's device roadmap anyway.

The OP could've rephrased the question as "If Nokia offers a hw upgrade package to make your N900 fully maemo6 compatible with capacitive touch screen (w/ amoled), will you pay for that? and how much?" and that would've given it a more maemo spin.

Btw:
- should have
- capacitive
- think != thing
- Proper use of capitalization, grammar and punctuations are appreciated.

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Capacitive = No, I like to use gloves to answer my phone, i live in UK, weather is poop here lol.
OLED = No, had it on the Nokia n85, couldnt see ANYTHING on the screen in the sun, very very poor in direct sun light.

craftyguy 2010-03-06 18:36

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

I would pay for such an upgrade. I've only used my stylus MAYBE twice since I bought the phone back in December, and I don't wear gloves. As much as people here seem to hate multitouch, I actually like it (though it took me a couple of months to get used to it on my old iphone). It makes things like zooming quite intuitive.

Also, not sure if it has been mentioned earlier in the thread, but migrating to OLED would shave a few millimeters off the overall thickness of the phone :)

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

I would not pay, until the platform is more mature with more and better software. What they have now is very bare bones and they need to fix that LONG before they fix the hardware, which is pretty ok as it is. Not that it couldn't be better.

jaysire 2010-03-06 18:41

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Oh, and thanks for making this thread, that gives me the illusion that my opinion matters ;)

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

yes I would love these features.... just not on the N900 .. this phone is in a completely different league.. it needs its own hardware n software FIXES rather than UPGRADES....

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

i woildnt, the touch screen is very sensitive as it is! also, using my nails to pinpount links, and using the stylus when im feeling lazy is a bonus!

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Samsung already has a phone or two on the market with both types of input on the same touchscreen, and RIM filed this patent last year. There's no reason this shouldn't be standard on every smartphone...

Re: would you pay for amoled & capacitive touch upgrade?

Hell yeah!!! I had an ipod touch for three months or so (before I could not bear owning an apple product anymore and had to sell it). In that time not once did I ever make a selection error even though it was my first experience ever with a capacitive sreen. With the N900 I make so many errors and I am tired of bending my finger to use my finger nails. I also treated the ipod touch like crap and not once did I even get a dot of a scratch. With the N900 I have two of the biggest scratches in history even though I treat it like the most fragile egg and do not put anything in the same pocket with it.
