UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

Just read this over on maemo-freak.com:

http://www.maemo-freak.com/index.php...ia-smartphones

I wonder if this has anything to do with the non release of the recent update over maemo update in the uk?

Having read my TMobile contract it does specifically exclude use of VOIP through my data plan but I must say, having 1200 mins in my contract I only use skype at home over wireless anyway. However, the skype client does work over my data connection too - the only thing that doesn't work is msn/ facebook chat etc....

Hmm.. food for thought at any rate....

(Ps - hope this isn't a problem to post this.... please delete/ move if it is....)

?? really, mine on Voda works great

but you could be correct with the link regarding the firmware, but all any UK users need to do is flash with the global firmware.

Have you actually managed to have a Skype conversation over T-Mobile 3g? Mine works fine over wifi but on 3g it is basically unaudible, just constantly flickering on and off. Been meaning to make a thread about it asking other's experience but haven't got round to it.

How can I do this? Sorry I only jump on this forum every once in a while so forgive me if there's all all knowing thread out there, and feel free to throw a link at me! Will this help me get updates as soon as everyone else gets them? Bit like symbian flashing to get rid of software branding?

Cheers

Do you mean your skype works or your msn works over your data plan? In my case skype, which is specifically excluded under t&c, does work and msn/ fb chat doesn't - there is a thread on here somewhere about the msn issue with Tmobile.....

Not so strange when you read that chat will work once I upgrade from web and walk to web and walk plus with Tmobile (at an extra £5 per month!) lol. I'll be calling them about it shortly but cba with the arguement that will ensure atm.... It's a specifically TMobile issue I think....

i didnt, phone actually seems snappier as well, so im happy :)

i did use the backup proggie on the n900 to keep all my settings, so id suggest doing the same, and save it to a memory card.... just in case :)

What do you do about backup-ing settings, apps, contacts etc? I'm guessing it will remove them all..?

So like is the .documents folder going to be safe? All I'm worried about is music and ROMs, took me a hell of a time to convert/find!

Yeah, I've done it quite a bit. Over 3G all over the UK (Manchester and surrounding areas, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and London and most of the south-east). That being said, London sucked most -- too many connections?

Here in Australia I get a better ping on Skype over 3G than regular mobile call when dialing very long distance (Oz to UK/Europe, or Canada/US)

Edit: Please keep the thread roughly on topic. If you need help, create your own thread.

this is actually quite interesting, since VOIP is 'meant' to be unavailable on all UK networks except 3!!

VOIP is available for me over Orange.

Hi guys,

Since we are on the topic of Skype on the N900. I though I ask this question which I havent been able to find an answer for.

How much data does Skype take up if connected to a 3G?

The reason why I ask this is because, Orange/Vodafone's Unlimited Internet is capped at 500mb. I got a shock when my data usage was over 600mb which doesnt seem right to me because all I use it for is emails and the occassionally surfing of the web.

The only thing I can think of is when I log onto the built in IM (facebook, MSN) VOip and Skype logs on as well. Exactly how much data does this take up?

Any thoughs on this?

Thanks.

Just wanted to add to this thread that I'm on Voda and Skype works fine for me.

Network operators blocking/shaping Skype traffic are short sighted... In a couple of years it'll all be VOIP so they should just adopt 3's approach and get on the 'dumb pipe' bandwagon.

Re: UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

What is all this Global firmware stuff? I have an N900 on a Nokia Vodafone contract and have absolutely no issues whatsoever regarding Skype of and IM programme.

I thought the issue with N900 bought direct from Vodafone is that Vf had added thire own version of firmware (including Vf360) that inhibited VOIP.

It is not, as far as I am aware a UK firmware issue, and the recent update workd just fine. Trouble is that mine is now at the menders :(

VOIP works fine for me too. Vodafone UK.

I've used Google Talk to google talk and that was fine. Still not used skype though. And I havent noticed any vodafone firmware stopping VOIP. They even promote the VOIP calls on their website with the N900.

remember your n900 is downloading full webpages now, not just some shrunk down wap site. good tip is to access all ur regular websites via wifi first... all images etc will be downloaded to ur cache. then you will download less when you access via 3g. also ive read that a few mb is used up is you refresh you app manager a lot. also widgets updating etc... reset my dataplan counter 2 days ago and ive built up 144mb....

i rang vodaphone. they said they wont charge for over usage of your 500mb. unless you do it all the time. they will also ring you tol let you know you are close to your limit

Re: UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

im on 02, and ive used skype a couple of times to make voice calls. But I didnt notice a charge? Ive got the unlimited web bolt on with my contract.
I read the info in the link and O2 said "We do not as a general rule block access to voice over IP services on our network. However, in the case of unlimited data services such as our data bolt on and iPhone tariffs, VoIP is prohibited within the excessive use policy,'
Im therefore assuming that if i was to abuse it or use it regurarly then they will charge me for this as they will know?
I also note that they prohibit audio/video streaming and p2p?!
Whats the point in having the package if people are going to worry about their bill when surfing sites like YouTube etc, or for people who are streaming videos/audio from a server setup on their PC via their 3G connection?!
:(

teh 2010-03-08 12:47

Re: UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

At the moment on my O2 simplicity contract I can use VoIP, MSN, Skype and streaming audio/video without issues. I quite frequently journey up and down the M27 Motorway with Fusion Radio Chicago streaming.

This recent stink kick up could change all that. The service won't be dramatically affected if they sort out bandwidth issues! P2P I can agree with a block on, use a broadband line for this as it hoards so many connections and bandwidth.

badboyuk 2010-03-08 13:07

Re: UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

p2p should not be blocked as it falls under data package. But if your downloading all the time then only you should be blocked from that service or bandwidth limited.
VOIP i can understand as they stand to lose a lot of money on that but then again iphone has been out for ages and its always had these things so why decide to block or charge for all this nw?! :-/

FYI anyone on Vodafone can get their data allowance upped to 3Gb/mo for an extra tenner :)

Thanks for the info.

Are there any widgets that allows you to check data usage seperately for wifi data usage and 3g?

I only know of one, but I think its the total data used..

Re: UK network operators not happy about skype client on nokia smartphones.... Maybe a reason for non release of recent update in UK???

personal dataplan monitor only measures network data.

I tried to check the amount of data used on a Skype call but because of varied results ended up rounding to 1mb / minute.
