[WIP] Theme bling !

5 Attachment(s)
Been working days to do this bling theme. I already had this going out on another thread but i was doing it in bits so my zip files were on loads of different pages, so someone suggested for me to make 1 full zip file with everything in it an start a thread so here it is.

I have changed may icons, some with my own unique designs some from the offerings on various threads. but mainly ive cocentrated on bringing the phone menus, buttons, and overall "flatness" to life. i love nokia phones, always have, but i feel they never seem to put any real effort into any "eye candy". so this is my attempt to do just that. i cant make installable themes, so im doin it all manually, so it may take you a while putting things in the right folders (it took me less than 10 min using winscp) but when you restart the phone its like you have been handed a new device, plus there is no bugs to watch for, etc. I have tried to make it simple by putting what you need in folders labled "place these files in.................." so just place the files where instructed and you will have the same theme as shown below. but if your more selective i have also made a "BACKUP" folder with all the fils seperately so you can choose what you wish to install. and thats why i prefer the manual way, you can choose what you change. hope ya like it.

Ive added this many pics so you get a good feel for the theme.

I really like the icons for a lot of the different apps you have i would love to get the icon for the media player.. the one with the globe and the headset over it, is it possible to do that with out having the extra shinny bling effect.

Very nice theme. A bit too shiny for my taste, though.

My other objection: Remove the IE icon from the Web shortcut. ;)

yeah sure, glad ya like it because i only made that today lol. just download the zip file and its in a folder with 295x295 on the end. take it and place it it in the folder .....usr/share/icons/hicolor/295x295/hildon on your phone by the way thats the icon for the radio streaming not the media player, but you could just change it to be so its not a problem.

yeah ive never bin Totally happy with the "e" but my mates wanted it on their phone so it ended up staying. good thing is though everything can be changed at any time to suit individual needs and tastes

VLC icon for media player that uses Gstreamer? Internet Explorer icon for a browser that uses Mozilla's Gecko?! Well ingnoring them, you really should tone down the glossy effect on the buttons since it looks like almost painful. Still nice job actually replacing all the stock elements :)

i use any icon that that simply shows what will happen when ya press it. anyone lookin at my phone would instantly recognise the internet explorer button an know it will start the web and vlc and media player icon will take you to the media. standard buttons i would have thought. i saw one theme today where they have used puppy icons for everything lol. and as for toning down...no way, that was the point of the theme! bling, loud an shiny.:D

Re: Theme bling !

I'm already using this theme, parts of it. It are all separat files so u can choose what you want and what not. he put all files in separat folders so its really easy to put them into the right one. must have been much work to make it so detailed.

no deb file sorry. we have been usin winscp to get root access to the phone then manually install what you need.

Re: Theme bling !

surly some one on here knows how to make this into a deb file. i would happily try. but im almost sure there is sum 1 here that could do it in a few clicks.

xomm 2010-03-11 01:19

Re: Theme bling !

You could try using the official Theme Maker to do it.

I haven't touched theme making ever since the Diablo update for OS2008, so I don't have any links or info handy at the moment.

Re: Theme bling !

I don't understand how to get this theme working..
Do i need to use the x-terminal and do i have to be in root to do this?
Or can i unzip on my windows computer and put the files to the right folders from there?
Can't seem to find .....usr/share/icons from my computer.

Sorry, but i'm a noob at linux.. :p

Mad cool theme tho. ;)

Thanks for all the great work. Installed easily, almost all the parts. Love it.

To install, it's easiest to install openssh on the N900 then use something like winscp or an ftp client to copy files to the N900 (I use filezilla). Be warned though that you can delete or screw up files on your N900 and may have to re-flash. If you only install the files in this package you should be OK.

I also installed all the files in /usr/share/icons/hicolor..... to /home/user/.local/share/icons/hicolor...

this way I don't overwrite the files on my root filesystem and only have to delete the files in the .local folder to return to the originals.

I think I used everything but the phone, media player, and general web icons. I also left the task manager/switcher and close items "stock".

And I updated the web shortcut to remove the explorer "E" attached.

Thanks! I got access using your metod. :)

Something else that i have to ask tho..

Say i want to change the "general_default_avatar"..
The instructions tells me to place in usr/share/icons/hicolor/216x216.
There is no files there to replace, so then i don't understand.. Will the N900 use the new avatar, or is it as i imagine that it shuld be plased under the folder "hildon"? (usr/share/icons/hicolor/216x216/hildon)
There are several avatar files there, so i imagine that one of them have to be replased..?

Told you i'm a complete noob, but i don't want to make a mess of my N900.. lol :p

Re: Theme bling !

Crom,

Yes, all the icon/hicolor stuff goes in a hildon folder inside the size (216x216) folders.

Tjgib2001 did a great job putting this all together, but I think there were a coulpe typos along the way.

Re: Theme bling !

unsure whats happening as most of the files work -

when my N900 is connected to my pc just make a new directory named "themes". (full path: /home/user/MyDocs/themes)

in this folder make two additional directories named "beta" and "beta-backup".

now copy all modded .png files into their relevant folders within the 'beta' folder as per you instructions .
disconnect usb.

open x-term.
1. get root:
type "sudo gainroot".
2. copy files to back them up:
type "cp -r /usr/share/themes/beta/* /home/user/MyDocs/themes/beta-backup/"
3. overwrite existing files:
type "cp -r /home/user/MyDocs/themes/beta /usr/share/themes/beta"

now things like the contact frames, web shortcuts, menu icon, desktop shortcuts, calendar widget etc etc (basically all mods that need to be in the 'images' folder) seem to work apart from the phone dialer, calendar (even though the .png files are in the same 'images' folder that seem to work for other mods)

Wow!!! Looking at this thread and the mods thread shows me some really really lovely things that can be done with the N900. Just wish I understood how to do all these mods, etc. Don't have a clue. Hopefully one day these things would be apps, etc that basic users like me can actually make use of.

think i will change mine back too, cos seeing it there now without the "e" i think it looks better, i was never really keen on it any way. and that what i love about installing it this way, you can pick and choose what u like and what you dont. glad you like most of it.

trust me, im a noob too, it might not seem like it, but i had no clue about anything to do with this phone, i didnt even know what linux was, but i did what you did (this is all in the last month) and read through posts, thought wow, and then said to my self ive gotta learn. then went onto "show off your mods" thread, and read every single page, including links to "how to gain root access" and "using winscp" then went on youtube and watched videos on "glossy buttons using gimp" and creating icons and then after learning gimp i set to work changing all icons and menus, it took ages because there are hundreds of things to change and most of the time you dont know what you are changing untill you try it, so there is a lot of phone restarting and finger crossing. but as long as you backup there is nothing to worry about

so from one noob to another just stick at it and read, and search, and also the guys in this community are amazin too, all the help you want from some real experts. good luck anyway.

not really sure im qualified to answer this as i have no idea how to use xterm. but one thing i noticed is in my instructions i say put them in the alpha folder and your using beta. maybe you would now have to change your theme by going desktop menu, themes, and changing to the other theme (one is alpha theme and relates to the alpha folder, the the other is beta theme and relates to the beta folder.) so if you have placed everything in the beta folder but are running the "alpha" theme then some thing will not show up. hope this helps. or hopefully someone with more xterm knowledge will jump in here

waited till i got home and used winscp and noticed that using xterm created folders within folders thats why some of the theme worked and some didnt.

now using winscp i have managed to sort it all out. so im happy now :)
