4G network out already
Apparently Sprint is the first one
Just saw the ad for it, not sure if it's misleading or not since I don't know any handsets that can cope with 4G? http://sprint.com/4g Their slogan was something like the first and only wireless 4G network from a national carrier. US residents can sue them for misleading ad I suppose :) Ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImAD8BOBOhw not the one I saw, I'll look for that one. |
Re: 4G network out already
I believe Sprint is pushing a mobile broadband router or whatever. No handsets yet (from them). They're using WiMax, I think there are a few devices that may or may not work on their network (they probably wouldn't let you in any case).

Re: 4G network out already
Uh, Sprint rolled out the first part of their 4g network last year. It's still not nationwide, but it is in almost every single major metro in the nation. That's why I was laughing so hard at CES this year. AT&T are going at each other's throats and completely ignoring Sprint who's right now currently kicking both their ***'s to the curb. :D

Re: 4G network out already
They have had 4G for a while, since they were a major investor in ClearWire WiMax and actually gave them the wireless spectrum they owned to roll out WiMax they just piggy back on their 4G and call it sprint. They don't have any actual phones yet but the HTC supersonic should be hitting in June/July.

Re: 4G network out already
No -- The fact is that they have a 4G network. My desktop is hooked up to it right now (via a router). I'll even give it my personal endorsement since it is the first service I've seen that delivers AS-ADVERTISED speeds.
Here's what I'm getting for $40/mo.: http://www.speedtest.net/result/740880464.png |
Re: 4G network out already
4G with Spring=2G with other networks.

Re: 4G network out already
I guess this is good news for folk in the US but I would like to ask 1 question.......If a 4G network is widely available, do we need newer hardware to be able to take advantage of it or is the n900 capable of handling it? I also speculate that if not then perhaps a firmware update may allow this?
At the moment I see the n900 reach upto 3.5G sometimes. |

Re: 4G network out already
Mobile WiMax is working in Russia for about a year already, however there is only one phone from HTC:

some of N810 has support for WiMax (I think it was called WiMax edition) |
Re: 4G network out already
Yeah, 4G is a whole other signal type, thus requiring different transmit/receive chips. Current 3G chips won't work.

Re: 4G network out already
The thing is that they got the wrong 4G tech. LTE will be the global 4G network and will be the one used in Europe and is already the 4G network in Asia, probally in USA too(Verizons 4G network will be LTE).
North European capitals got LTE networks working since last year and this is the year when the build is on for LTE. Still India, China just to give example and USA with HSDPA networks are still on the build so i don't see too many manufacturers having even fraction of 4G phones coming this year. Thankfully there is chip made that can use LTE and WIMAX so hopefully we don't again have the America with other and Europe and Asia with other. I'm sure just like with 3G Nokia will be one of the first with many 4G phones considering it's Nokia Siemens Network that's building by far most of the networks with Ericsson :) http://pcworld.about.com/od/networki...ope-Snicke.htm |
Re: 4G network out already
Tissot: Ain't gonna happen. American companies think they're the **** and refuse to play by the same rules as everyone else, thus you won't see them adopt the same standard as ANYBODY else. Heck, you don't even have similar networks in the US between regions in some cases, and most definitely between carriers. So expecting them to conform to the world is like nearly impossible until someone beats the arrogance out and some commons sense into the suits making all these ******ed decisions.
<sarcasm> Oh wait, that's right, they're not ******ed! They're designed to force carrier/vendor lock-in which American corps seem to love in space. </sarcasm> *groan* |
Re: 4G network out already
forget all this 4G lol! with 3G O2 i was able to play COD4 PC online with 98 PING much to my supprise and had no lag! I tried this same with voda 3G......300 + ping , i felt like sharing this info lol
edit, actually i aint tired vodafone 3G on pc yet just tested ping on phone using speedtest site. i might give it a try at some point |
Re: 4G network out already
Strange, I don't have 4G where i live, but the 3.5G connection can get a 10Mbit connection nevertheless.

Re: 4G network out already
seeing as both verizon and at&t are going to be using LTE as their 4g technology, Sprint with its wimax will likely be left in the dust.
Most major manufacturers have said they are pretty much dissing wimax and heading straight for LTE including the like of nokia, motorola http://www.betanews.com/article/Noki...max/1238686479 |

IOW, Sprint is screwing up again, investing in another incompatible, less capable technology. WiMax is a loser. |
Re: 4G network out already
Nope, they're not screwing up. They're doing it purposely to once again vendor lock their customers. They don't want you to go to anyone else, so they're more or less ensuring that you don't without going through a lot of pain and suffering. Yes, it'll all backfire on them, but it's not a screwup. It's intentional.
