Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Just saw this: http://gizmodo.com/5490018/google-ma...ime-for-spring
Which is pretty cool for a cyclist like me in NYC. Would anyone know of a way to implement this in Maemo Mapper? |
Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
I read your post and added support for them (for the N900):
- click on the title bar - Maps - Manage repositories... - Sync - click on the title bar - Maps - Google Cycling Have fun :-) |
Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Oh noes, I have an N810 and I don't have the Sync option. Should I re-download the list of sample repositories, or am I out of luck? Any way to add it in manually?

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Hi,
Could you give a bit more detail on how to use this, and also explain what you mean by "title bar". Where is this found? Thank you. Quote:

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Please provide the URL for Google Cycling maps. It's easy to add the an N8x0 if you know it.

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Well, I have added a Google map to Mapper before, I just don't know how to go about getting the URL in the first place. If you go to Google maps, click on More, and then check Bicycling you'll get the cycling maps.

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Here is the URL to be used in the diablo version:
http://mt.google.com/vt?lyrs=m@119,bike&z=%d&x=%d&y=%0d @RockCreek1: the title bar is where the word "Mapper" is. When you see a small arrow next to the application title, it means that there is a menu. |
Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
I'll try this on my N810 and then document it in the Maemo Mapper Howto http://FragosTech.com/MaemoMapper

I am cyclist as well, this will be totally sweet if it works!

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
It's cool because the map colors are more simple and it's easier to see the streets and stuff. And it marks streets with bike lanes in green which is helpful when venturing into areas where you haven't biked before. Unfortunately the bigger aspect of the tool which is directions on bicycling won't be available on Mapper, unless someone can find a way to export google directions and import them in Mapper. Supposedly the directions account for bike lanes, large unfriendly streets, and even hills so that you're not going up a giant hill when there could be a better route.

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
Can this work on N900 too or only for N810 ?

Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
I finally got around to testing this bicycling map on my N810 with Maemo Mapper and indeed it does work. The work is all done in Manage Repositories. Start with the new button, I was offered both legacy and sqlite3 formats and chose legacy. Then enter the URL, map name and the location of the data base. I live in Fresno and some bike routes were available.
http://mt.google.com/vt?lyrs=m@119,bike&z=%d&x=%d&y=%0d There is a version of Maemo Mapper for the N900 that I've heard about but not used as I'm an N810 user. I'd think the URL would work there as well. It'll just be a matter of a different user interface for what I summize is basically the same application otherwise. |
Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
What's difference between the newer format and legacy, because I did the default and it works fine on my n810.
P.S. Fragos I like your guide but I can't seem to get the importing of directions to work for Mapper. Any tips? |
Re: Maemo Mapper with Google Maps Bicycling?
The legacy DB format may not be a standard but always worked for me. The newer DB format is sqlite3 which is very popular, particularly for personal applications with smaller DBs.
I usually use http://www.gnuite.com/cgi-bin/gpx.cgi on my desktop which yields a GPX file of my route. I then transfer that file to the folder on my N810 where my maps are stored. The built in function calls the same web site. All you need to enter are the street address, city and state or zip code in the US. You use these routes through Maemo Mappers menu system following Route then Open. You'll get a File Manager display of the folder with your GPX and DB files. Select the GPX file you want and it comes up as a green line on your map. |
