A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

With the Phone app, uou can only set the orientation as Portrait and Automatic.
But with either modes, it will switch between landscape and portrait depending on how my phone is held.

It's super annoying when I don't want it to flip but it does and keeps doing it. Until I keep it still.
Not good during speaker phone mode and I'm holding my phone. It's way to erratic.

So I want my phone to be kept in Portrait orientation no matter what. Permanently. Is this possible??
(Even when I slide out the keyboard, turn it around etc etc. Just fixed in portrait)

If you set it to portrait it will NOT rotate if you rotate the phone, it will only rotate if you open the keyboard.

However, I do not know if it is possible to keep the phone in portrait mode even after you open the keyboard.

well this is not a phone so it was designed to be used in landscape mode but phone appl and web browser can work in portrait mode. If u want phone with portait mode u should buy a phone not computer :)

Re: A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

Whether it is a phone or not has nothing to do with it. Actually, using the phone app in landscape-only mode is not even possible.

I agree with the OP that the flipping is unwanted, it causes a time delay when trying to pick up the phone (often closing the keyboard in the process). I would actually rather set it to landscape, as long as it stays like that.

@rrdbala: Launch the phone app, tap on the "phone" along the top which launches the menu, then tap Turning Control and change display orientation to Portrait.

That's what I expect but it's not the case most of the time.
I have it set to portrait but it still flips to landscape often.

Could you please exactly explain in which case or situation?

It should not be doing that if you set it to Portrait. As Helmuts said, please provide more details on when exactly this is happening i.e. after you finish a call, or straight after you open the phone app etc.

I have to agree, there still is some uncontrollable switching between Landscape/portrait despite setting it to display Portrait only. The phone application is somewhat immature. :(

Strange... I have it set to portrait and I have never seen the phone app even try to go to landscape, since I changed the setting (except when I open the keyboard)

Re: A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

I have had this also but now when i test, it seems to be working ok.

i THINK this occurs when someone is actually ringing you. I have had experiences where i have gone to hang up and the phone has flipped. again i have just tested this and for the life of me i cant get it to falter but it has happened enough for me to notice this and seems others have too.

all in all wouldnt say it was a show stopper though

Even when you set orientation to Portrait, phone app in background is in landscape.
And when device is hold in landscape and you receive a phone call, the phone app appears in foreground landscape and then flips to portrait. And in that fliping time it is impossible to answer a phone.

It definitely doesn't get 100% fixed in portrait. I've reflashed my N900 but still same. It will rotate to landscape during call quite often. It really gets annoying when you can't even press the Speaker or the End button.

it would be really helpful if ppl could "thank" to the posr when they're having the same problem. also i think people with real solutions or solution attempts should reply to the post. it's reallly annoying to read so many posts and pages of replies for nothing but people replying to unrelated things. just an opinion.

Re: A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

i have a similar annoying issue with the randomly rotating phone app.
i've set it to portrait only, and what happens is when i get the phone out of lock with the side switch, press the phone shortcut, the app launches in portrait, but right away it flips to landscape, regardless of the keyboard and the phone orientation, then when i press the 'keypad' button, it goes back to portrait. other applications shows there is no problems with the accelerometer either...

can post up a video of this happening if it gives a better idea.

i just want the entire phone app to stay in portrait and never be in landscape, seems this isnt working at the moment.

"phone application" force portrait mode?

hi there, i was wondering if there is an app or if it is easy to edit something and force the phone application to always launch in portrait mode.
it is designed to work in portrait mode too + there is the switch to change modes depending on orientation.

anyways i was too furstrated that i just couldnt predict where the answer/end call button will be when i remove the phone from my pocket.

so is there any1 that can design something about it? or some app that already exists?

The thread "'phone application' force portrait mode?" with three posts has been merged into this thread.

Re: A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

Mine and my friend's N900 both have such problem of the phone app constantly changing it's orientation during when i try to pick up the call or when hanging up. sometimes it never changes to portrait even when held vertically. it's super annoying.

i want to fully disable accelerometer-based automatic orientation switching for the phone app. i want it either fixed in landscape or portrait permanently. can this be done?.

Re: A way to fix the Phone app as Portrait permanently?

I can report that the leaked fw (PR 1.2 alpha-bravo) has fixed this issue.
So once we get the official PR 1.2 update, this thread should no longer be valid. =)

well, it still does switch to landscape if you open up the keyboard. But at least it doesn't switch erratically.
