T-mobile USA bandwidth
 
What kinds of data rates are people getting with T-mobile in the US on their N900? I live in West Lafayette IN and my N900 consistently gives 5 bars and reports either 3G or 3.5G. Yet with speedtest.net, I never get more than 1.1Mb/s download either locally on the device, tethered via USB, or tethered via bluetooth. Sometimes I get far less, 200-300Kb/s, sometimes as low as 20-50Kb/s. Yesterday I tried in Chicago (Hyde Park) and also got abysmally low data rates even though it also reported 5 bars and 3G or 3.5G.

I have the even more plus plan and use epc.tmobile.com as my APN.

I get 300Kb/s in Tucson, AZ with 5 bars. I'm on the same plan with Tmobile using the epc APN.

In the Washington DC area, I average between 480kbps to 695kbps on T-Mobile using the internet2.t-mobile.com APN.

Used epc.tmobile.com as my APN since day one.

Getting avg of 600k in Los Angeles.
Once, I get up to 1.2mbs in City of San Gabriel, CA.

Make sure you are on the t-mobile smart phone data plan, not Android.
Android plan will work, but not optimized. (I was getting only 200-400k, before the switch). Price is the same for switching.

I get 800 kbps to 1 Mbps download speed with 3.5G in Macon, GA, using epc.tmobile.com APN.

can anyone tell me if i get the regular cheap data plan from t-mobile, the $10 one, if that will work the same as the smart phone data plan thats $30 i think, or does having the smart phone data plan really make a difference?

I just ran a quick speed test from speedtest.net and this is what I get:
1.1 Mbps down
0.33 Mbps up
I'm in Washington DC and have the $5.99/mo T-zones plan

the day i got my tmobile sim card and put it in i ran a speed test... i got a little over 1.25 Mbp/s down and about .3 Mbp/s up... i didnt take a screenshot and cat remember how many bars i had...

this is from Seattle. WA.

im on the epc apn and havethe $30 data plan...

and to think i was whining about i being low... i got on video chat at the store with a tmobile who actually knew something... i thought i saw other n900 users online getting 4-7 Mbp\s... am i mistaken?

Im in NJ in the basement of a lab, right now I have 3 bars on 3G, and my download speed is 1.69Mb/s and my upload is 0.59Mb/s

In Austin,Tx I get anywhere from 40kbps to 700kbps. I can test all day and switch the sim to my HTC G1 that consistently gets 800kbps to 1200kbps. Don't know what is going on there, but it is true.

FYI: my3gspeed.com is soooo much easier that speetest.net.

Yeah, but how accurate is that site, vs. speedtest.net? The same goes for Mobilespeedtest.com, or whatever that other site is.

Just use this link for "speakeasy" (same provider, different page):

i just called t-mobile to add the data plan for my n900. when i told them i wanted the $10 data plan the rep told me i had to get the $25 plan. how did some of u guys get the $10 data plan?

Order online...however it is too late for you, now that they know you have a smartphone.

I switched to the $25 plan...couldn't deal with the latency issues. Anything over 150ms is "not recommended" for VoIP.

I added the $10 plan online, and I got speeds from 600-800kbs. But I called in to ask them some questions about APN's, the rep reset the connection to phone and now I get 3.0mbps+.

Does anyone know if you have to call TMobile to update them if you put the SIM in a new device? I got some cheap free phone and told them to put the smartphone plan since I would be using the N900 in the future and they did it. But the cheap phone was limited to 2G. When I first got the N900 the epc was internet2 but I switched it to epc. Though I'm not sure if I need to call TMobile to let them know to get the speeds reported. I'm usually in the DC area for school and work and the epc APN works.

Postitive. EPC has nevered worked for me. The epc apn always redirects me to an upsell page. The speed change had nothing to do with apn because I've always used internet2. The only difference was that I called in, the rep told me to turn phone off so he can reset connection. When I turned it back on, I noticed speed increase.

How do you know where its routed through? Your link says the server is still in Kansas. I live in the Seattle area, and my speedtest.net also says the server is in Kansas. I have the $25-30 plan and am using the epc apn...

I'm guessing it's where the yellow star is located at is where you're routed through? Yes that picture shows Kansas, but look at the distance FROM Kansas. ~1400 miles from Kansas.

So I've got 3.5g connection through 't-mobile internet' with the EPC apn. I have 4-5 bars. I believe im now being 'routed' through Seattle, WA, or very close to it as the icons are all stacked on top of each other :)

I've tested three times, the first time my latency was 345 ms (this is the time i scrolled in the web page to make sure to select 'seattle wa, as it was closest to me... The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, time Ive gotten 130-145ms latency (just hit begin test, no messing around with selecting a location, it would select seattle, wa automatically) and 1.00-1.10 mpbs download and 0.30-0.35 mpbs upload.

EDIT: It appears that whenever I open a new page, the first speed test latency is in the mid 300ms's... but subsequent 'test agains' will always have below a 150ms latency...

Just did the same tests with the internet2.voicestream.com APN.

I tested did 4 consecutive tests.

The latency was always in the mid 300ms's. Download and upload numbers were in the same range as above.

If you want to make sure you are subcribed to the right plan, call them.

Either plan will give you access to the 7Mb network...whether you are in range of a 7Mb tower is another issue.

Well, if I'm using a testing site, which gives different speeds, for different file sizes, one of which is faster han the provider has provisioned, I wouldn't rely on it...not just my experience, not just on the 900, and not just T-Mobile.

However, if the mobilespeedtest site is working for you, good luck with that. I'm just a "user" of the site, not an admin, so my "experience" is what dictates my decision regarding continued use.

I know I have the smartphone plan since I see it on the TMobile.com page.

I was just wondering if TMobile has to do anything to do the SIM card (even remotely).

I'm impressed. I tested my N900 through CNET's bandwidth test, bandwidthplace.com, and speakeasy.net. Ended up averaging 3mb/s download and a 1mb/s upload with full bars in Sacramento.

Sure is going to suck when AT&T ****s it all up for everyone...
