Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

Tilt the floor to roll a ball through an obstacle course before time runs out. Neverball is part puzzle game, part action game, and entirely a test of skill.
Also found here is Neverputt, a hot-seat multiplayer miniature golf game, built on the physics and graphics engine of Neverball.
Neverball and Neverputt are both known to run under Linux, Win2K/XP, FreeBSD, and Mac OSX. Hardware accelerated OpenGL is required. A 500MHz processor is recommended.

The game is available for Windows, Mac and the source is available.

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

There's some discussions on their message board (from last couple years) about porting to OpenGL ES but it all seems very secretive, mentions of Apple NDA's, etc.

Summary is that it has been ported, but source code is not being released at this point for whatever reason.

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

Perhaps they plan to port it to iPh0ne and hope to have some profit.

Perhaps we should contact them, they might consider a port for maemo aswell

looks just like a level or two from Super Mario Galaxy, my son's favourite Wii game.

LOL @ "Never Ball"... I thought this was a metaphor for Nokia stringing folks along or something. anyway.... it does seem like an awesome game

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

would have the same gameplay as Bounce evolution, though i like this better for some reason :P ... besides it seems like we're not getting more levels any time soon, just the 2 demo crappy ones :(

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

Hey, uhm... source code IS available....

So uhm... ANYONE could port it.. well, at least anyone would some programming skills.

I tried to compile the debian package (yes, it IS packaged for Debian, and the game does scream for the accelerometer. And yes, it is nausea inducing on a large screen TV....)

The debian compile didn't quite work, said it was missing some header files (GL/gl.h) and then gave a lot of errros of gui.h and libSDL errors. If anyone would like the log...

Wow! this is great news, perhaps other devs will gain interest in this as well.
Could you perhaps link to the source code and post your progress with some more details?

Thanks for your effort:D

But AFAIK the source code from the OpenGL ES port is not available, which is what we really need.

This wrapper might help out with the porting.

Hmm:
http://www.happypenguin.org/show?Neverball

EDIT: I've just played 20 levels on PC and this game is giving me headaches and making me feel dizzy. It's the way how the game moves with you. It would be even worse on a small screen. For me a big no-no lol.

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

Here is the link for the Debian Squeeze package, or you can 'apt-get source neverball' if you are running Debian.

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/neverball

I'm not a programmer, but I wouldn't think it'd be all that hard to port it from OpenGL to OpenGL ES.

I would think adding the accelerometer as the control would be more difficult, but would make the game a billion times less nauseating and much more fun (well, unless you like to vomit, maybe if you're bulimic or something).

Well i had similar games on symbian and they were nice:)
Maybe if the phone would be the moving thing it would be nice.

Anyway, now that I see your location, waiting for black mesa source too?:D

was that a stupid question??

On Symbian they didn't look so good and so real lol. I can imagine it could be a great game, but it would need tweaking.

Me? Definately! :D It should have come out some time ago, but i'm still waiting, it will be worth the wait! HL1 was and still is a legend. Playing it again with great graphics will just make it even better. :D Though i must add that i'm curiously awaiting HL2: EP3. Valve are being quiet about it the third year and that smells fishy. Unless they're already working on HL3. Gee...how much i love Gordon..ehm..Alex :D

Btw, looking at your avatar... you like Evil Con Carne/Grim & Evil :D ?

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

Has anyone tried it with Ubuntu?

slaapliedje 2010-03-17 12:25

Re: Neverball a game that deserves to be experienced with an accelerometer

I've played it on Debian and Ubuntu throughout the years. It was much more playable on my 21 inch screen than my 42 inch that I have now.

Only because when the entire world is tilting like that in front of your face, you tend to want to firehose your lunch all over the place!

Performance is awesome though, well at least on nvidia cards, I don't think I've ever tried it on an ATI or intel card, but I don't think it uses any high level shaders or anything, so should work just as well there.

From playing Bounce, I don't see how the N900 couldn't handle it very well.

Speaking of which, why would they have it all open source, then have a closed source port to OpenGL ES? I personally blame Apple!

Let's get this ported!

Neverball is coming :)
Blog post with video

I personally don't find that the accelerometer input is the best way to control the game, but maybe it's just me who's not skilled enough. :)

There are Neverball and Neverputt in extras-devel. Beware though:
Code:

~ $ /opt/maemo/usr/games/neverball
Font 'ttf/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf' doesn't exist, trying default font.
Could not load font 'ttf/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf'.
Segmentation fault
~ $ /opt/maemo/usr/games/neverput
-sh: /opt/maemo/usr/games/neverput: not found
~ $ /opt/maemo/usr/games/neverputt

It segfaults me even when I
Code:

Were there any errors when compiling?

The fact that there's a package in extras-devel doesn't mean that the game is ready. :)
Now I believe I got it packaged correctly, but I'll announce it here when it's ready.

That's because you want a murcielago, I think a Gallardo is more realistic and will surely suffice. :)

There is an accelerometer issue. Doesn't want to tilt forward.

OK, now it's in extras-testing!
And neverputt is also there: http://blog.mardy.it/2011/07/e-neverputt.html

Neverputt doesn't appear to be in testing yet. I only see it in devel.
