N800 dark shadows on screen
My N800 is going back today because it has a dark shadow bar vertically down the right side of the screen. Very noticeable on white backgrounds - anyone else having this problem or shadows around the screen?
I ordered a new one already so hoping it won't be the case with the next one. |

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Thats good to know - I think I'll just stick with this one then and cancel the new one.
Thanks! |

I don't even think Nokia still accepts returns because of the shadowing. |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Yes mine is just kind of faint on the right - Nokia issued an RMA with no hassle but I started thinking better a devil I know than an N800 that may be worse...

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
mine is also much more noticable in FBReader and also on the white boot screen. That right edge also gets much warmer for me. My guess is that is where the screen connects to the internals.

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I can see the little lights on that side - I think you're right..
|
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
There's a light source under the screen (on the right side on the N800). There is one on all LCD screens of this type, although it's done a bit differently depending on the brand (Palm Sanyo screens are very different from the Sony screens, the latter are much nicer but the lights are very visible). The shadows are probably caused by the angle to the screen so near the light source, or something like that. In any case it's normal.

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Well I picked mine up in the case over the weekend and it slipped out, hit the corner of my desk right on the display of course. Now a much brighter spot right where it hit on the display but no other damage or abrasion on the screen. The film screen protector had a nice gash in it where it took the impact.
So my wife now has it since she could care less about the screen inconsistency and I have a new one coming. Not a fan of the soft case so far. |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
The new N800 just arrived and the screen seems not quite as bright but there are no shadows or dark areas that I can see.
I can still see the little lights along the right side but they are not as pronounced and the dark vertical bar that was along the right side is definitely not there on the new one. I know this may sound silly but the new one is much faster booting up and running. My original N800 seems to be very slow doing most things -randomly freezes up loading web pages and email. Odd. |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I brought mine about a week after CES, and I don't see that problem. But yes I do feel a little sluggish from time to time. But nothing major. Considering I have bunch of stuff on there, and booting off from an 8GB card, I'll say it's handing very well, much better than 770. And yes, I hate the case as well, so I bought a DS lite case for $10, cut off some of the plastic, and use the rest to hold the n800. It fit sungly.

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
As has been mentioned, the shadowing is a known issue. It can't be completely eliminated as yet, but it does manifest to various degrees. If yours is really bad, you might consider returning it for a replacement, and if you can, fire up the replacement in the store before taking it home.

Is the shadowing and position of the backlight on the right handside, connected with the loss of touch screen sensitivity on the N800, thread here? Most of the touch screen sensitivity issues seem to happen on the right hand side, is there a link? Rich |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I am not sure if there is a link. If you look closely, though, you will see that the LCD light emitters are on the right side; they are the cause of the shadowing. I'm thinking a solution would involve an improved diffuser. It *may* be possible that the emitter strip interferes with screen sensitivity, but I'm not in a position to verify that at this point.

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Just to confirm this issue, when i got mine brand new from nokia it was a bright lit display as expected on all four corners. Today i have now noticed the gray shadow wiith it apears to be light emition on the right most dominant on the boot screen. Also the day before i noticed on the far right sside i had trouble witthh having the screen to scroll and had to press harder in order for it to respond. This is definetly not a feature because it was not there when i fitst got. We may need to replace al; our units if this is infact a problem that needs to be recalled.

I would recommend returning your device for another. |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I have had the slight shading on the right side of my screen on the n800 since I first turned it on. I have seen this before on other mobile devices. After a while I do not notice it unless I look for it. For me it is not enough of a problem to return it.
I also noticed over time that I now have to press a little harder to scroll on the lower middle right side. But again, at this point it has not been enough of a problem for me to return it. Still have 9 months to decide before the waranty expires. :o |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I've always had the shadow, and can guarantee everyone else has it if they look for it.

When I first got my tablet in perfect working condition I went to google.ca and typed in the search feild " nokia n800 forums" this forum came up and as I browsed through it to find what cool things I can install to make it more functional I came across this section. I looked for the dark shadow to see if I had this issue most were complaining about and didnt see it, I didnt even bother to respond to the topic with a comment "mines good" it would not be very productive or helpful to those who do have this problem. Now that its very noticable and gradually getting darking.. id say myself and others are not imagining things. If you had this problem all the time, then yours was bad from the get go. I can tell you for a fact the left side of your screen should be as bright as the right and the screen should be sensative on any side of the screen you touch. I will see if I can take a picture of how it looks and see if the camera can pick it up for those who dont know what it looks like. |

I got mine from Nokia Canada, is there anyway to find out if they have no defective ones there? will they have to ship it from the U.S or were the main factory is that has adjusted this in the assembly line? Id rather ship it to were it will get replaced then to go into a loop that get me no where bot a lost device like some had on this forum. |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I have the shadow also since I bought the device 2 weeks ago.
But actually if you don't look for it, it is hardly noticable. But it seems that the touch screen gets less responsive at the border areas. Not sure if this is connected to the display protection foil. |

Yeah, I don't know what to tell you about the loops. It's easy to say "replace it" but I do realize there's a risk. All I can say the process is being scrutinized... |
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
As promised, this is a picture of my N800 after about 2 weeks use. No dropping or bad handling. It never looked this way when I had it before on the first week and a half.
I can only imagine this will get worse over time as it has now... http://www.shakepourserve.com/pics/n800.JPG |

Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
I would like to bring mine back to Nokia Canada were I purchased my unit online. Has anyone had experiences with them in returning the device and time it took to repair? I'm reluctant to do so with the stories I hear and also upset I have to deal with an unsatisfactory device because of the touch screen issue after paying over $500 for it. Any suggestions?
|
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Profusion, that's not the absolute worst I've seen (which, interestingly, has only been 1 out of several thousand), BUT it is typical of the general worst cases (of which I've seen many dozen). It may or may not worsen from there.
|
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Other then the fact that i can no longer scroll on the right, what was your suggestion again?
|
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Ok, if scrolling doesn't work, return it.
|
Re: N800 dark shadows on screen
Wow! I'm glad I found this discussion. I was getting more and more upset about the shadow on the right side of mine. It's annoying, but hasn't affected functionality at this point - although it seems to be spreading.
