Nightly Fennec Builds

Anyone still downloading the latest nightly Fennec builds? I know this questions has been asked across a bunch of Firefox threads, but figured it was worth its own thread. I just removed Firefox and replaced it with the latest nightly build and find it to be a much better performer than the current 1.0 release. My only issues are that the number of compatible add-ons is limited, but at least Weave (the biggest reason I enjoy using it) is functioning.

We seem to be in a similar seat. I was using Firefox about two weeks ago then I tried Fennec and never looked back. Too bad Nightly Tester Tools isn't working on Fennec, that way you could have run any extension. I guess you can just hack it at your computer/direcly in the N900 if you wished too, though.

Started using Fennec nightly builds-way faster than the current Firefox. Add ons stopped working for me in the last two builds, how to make them work again?

Re: Nightly Fennec Builds

Looks like we need to tell people about the repo. Beware however that using it from a repo will trigger a daily update. That's what a nightly build is after all.

This is a very useful guide to that as well, written by a Mozilla QA tester:

Well, I guess that should be pretty obvious:D
It happens to me all the time at my computers too, since I run Minefield on them.

By the way, I will check if I can hack an extension and install it on my N900 later tonight.

No the add-ons are not working with the recent nightly builds

Weave does, thankfully.

EDIT: And Autopager lite, an awesome addon.

So does TwitterBar. NearMe is also available.

Hm, I'm surprised that the nightly is still called Fennec (and has the lovely Fennec pictures), while the release name is Firefox.

And also, the nightly doesn't have an icon. :(

Re: Nightly Fennec Builds

the icon will eventually show up, probably after restarting.

Firefox aka Fennec nightly will also support portrait mode any day now:

Today's update implemented it on my N900. It works nicely, although the "new" home page doesn't seem to like it very much - everything else reflows nicely to fit the new aspect ratio...

If an add-on doesn't work, you could always try editing the max version the add-on claims to support. Many add-ons that claim not to work actually can work just fine.

I have notified Mozilla: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556601#c5

How do we do that?
I would love to install lazy click

I'd like AdBlock to work.

Yep, it definitely is. Either way, thanks for using our nightly builds and thank you again for notifying us! We appreciate you taking the time out of your day to find and comment into that bug.

Confirmed that this is also possible on the N900.

Zooming with buttons works, yes.

It was bug 533560.

I would also like to know. After a bit of research (not really familiar with Linux directory structure...) I found hidden Mozilla folder ( ~/.mozilla/fennec/ ) and one directory deeper there's a 'extensions' directory. Under this extensions folder, there are few directories which I guess correspond my installed extensions. The directory names are mostly some random ID inside curly brackets (I guess those curly brackets block the autocomplete with tab so you have to write those long names by hand :().

Anyway, I edited all install.rdf files and changed every maxversion to 1.* (from 1.0.*) under <em:tagetApplication> but it didn't help. Weave is still the only one that works. All I need is Adblock. But I have to say that there nightly builds are so much better that it makes up the lack of extensions. :) Startup time is shorter, start page is better and browser feels snappier.

The easiest (and probably fastest) way to get the add-ons rev'd up to the latest version would be to ask the author himself/herself.

You can do this by contacting the author via whatever means they've outlined in their AMO profile page. For example,

1. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addon/1865
2. Click on the Author's name (will be a hyperlink)
3. E-mail the author with your request ( be nice! they appreciate some pleasantries :) )

Hope that helps.

Indeed the current nightly build is very much better than the Fennec 1.0! Good work! I really like the UI in Fennec. It will be nice to see how the browsers will develop (microb vs. fennec)

Well, I guess your method is the best since the fastest and easiest (at least when you know what you do :)) doesn't work. I wrote email to author of the Adblock Plus. Let's see what happens. I tried to be really nice. :p It's awesome plugin after all.

Re: Nightly Fennec Builds

Just looked at this thread again. To make an add-on work with new versions of firefox, you have to edit the supported versions that it lists. You can either turn off compatibility checking (see here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_extensions) or change the max/min versions listed in the add-on's install.rdf file.

Is there any way to disable the auto-rotation functionality of nightly Fennec?

It starts to annoy me a lot.

I set accelerometer.enabled to false (and restarted, rebooted and stuff), but no effect.

ToJa92 2010-04-05 23:49

Re: Nightly Fennec Builds

I guess Fennec still can read it so it will still be that way. You can always download an older .deb from the repository and downgrade manually, I guess.

Re: Nightly Fennec Builds

Got email from Wladimir Palant, author of Adblock Plus. He has updated the max version of the plugin and suspected that my install.rdf editing didn't work since that plugin is signed. Editing install.rdf makes signature verification to fail. But there's a new version out now so Adblock Plus should now work with nightly builds! Works at least on my N810.

I'd suggest filing a bug at bugzilla.mozilla.org under the Fennec product and General component. If you don't want to, I can always do it myself on your behalf.
