Flash Chess & Garnet VM (Palm) Chess

Hi all...

I'm a very keen chess player but just don't like the built in chess app, the pieces are ugly and there aren't enough options...so I've been looking around for alternatives, flash being the obvious until somebody more familiar with developing than me comes up with a better alternative.

I've been following the 'Miniature' thread and look forward to when it's ready, thanks to qgil and others there for all your hard work.

So, this is what I have so far.....

FlashchessIII - A good looking game with the ability to save current state of play, and choose white or black.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2769/...caf011f487.jpg
as it plays in the browser you can zoom in.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/...41777bab28.jpg

FlashChessI - A simple flash chess game...good for beginners.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/...5c757c860a.jpg

Sillybullchess - Another simple game, just a different display.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/...fe0fb2c411.jpg

Flash Chesser - Just a board and pieces that you move, great for analysing games....
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/...1ec94e2cf5.jpg

Mate Master - A good chess puzzle game, includes many 'mate in' puzzles of increasing difficulty (maybe able to add more puzzles, i'll look into it when i've done them all).
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2785/...bb32f8481b.jpg

And finally, as they are played in the browser you can add shortcuts to your desktop :-)
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4006/...a650ddb5d7.jpg

UPDATE 15 FEB 2011. Two more to add......

CrazyChess..Quite a nice chess game with several levels of difficulty, you have to take the pieces with your white piece as they advance down the board whilst avoiding being captured yourself.
A good, fun game that helps speed of thought I suppose.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5097/...d5d97b2691.jpg

ChessMineFields..Place your pieces safely onto the board in a given amount of time. Great little time killer.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5015/...c9448f33dc.jpg

Uploaded to rapidshare, just about 3mb....download, extract and copy to N900.
I have them in a chess folder on my SD card with shorcuts...

One final thing, as i've said before, i'm not a developer but was hoping somebody who is could have a look at these links and see if there is any possiblity? :-)

Incidentally, the chess game I use most now though is Chessmaster on the SNES emulator...looks and plays well in 2D mode.

Re: Flash Chess

:-)... yep, all free, they're flash apps just gathered from around the web.

really looking forward to your miniature app though...would love a program to play through some PGN's.

I'm taking the liberty of bumping this because I've added a couple more games and a new link. :D

Thanks abill, Actually , I usually ride a motorbike home most of the time and save the buses for when I fancy a drink after work - never tried playing chess while riding but it's a thought!

Should have updated this thread though because all my chess needs are currently sated by Garnet.
I have Chess Tiger, Chess Genius, Hiarcs and Openchess installed and they all work excellently...
Here are some screen shots:-

Open Chess

Hiarcs

Chess Genius

And they all have changeable views, similar to this:-

And I've also now got Eboard for playing through PGNs

wow, lots of cool options .. Agree that the inbuilt chess game is pretty dumb. Shall check out couple of other games listed above !

Thanks for sharing this info mate!

Of those mentioned. OpenChess is completely free. Hiarcs is probably the best commercial Palm chess game. Miniature was a big disappointment. Eboard is not that good for viewing games.

All in all, Nokia is still an astonishingly poor environment for chess players. It someone was going to make an actually good chess game for the N900, they should either start with Scid (for its many useful functions) or Miniature (for its beauty and mostly unrealized potential).

Re: Flash Chess & Garnet VM (Palm) Chess

Just to let you know where I am now regarding chess on the N900.

I installed the new Nitdroid Vostok mostly to get the chess.com app and also the freechess app to play my online games. Both are excellent, as is the shredder chess app. Obviously there was the chance of missing calls whilst playing so to get round this I divert calls in maemo to my other mobile (SE T68i) and then boot nitdroid, when a call comes in, just reject it and the other mobile rings.
Still use GarnetVM though for games against comp when I fancy just a quick game.

@Geneven, I completely agree, I had such high hopes for minature but I think it's abandoned now and whilst Eboard works it's a bit too fiddly...

This is one of my favorite sites.

http://m.gameknot.com/

But it has serious problems.

Using Tear, when I choose a chess puzzle, the cookies don't keep so it has me as a Guest, and I can't save any of my chess pieces or board color settings either.

With Microb, it's not too bad since my settings do get saved.

However, I have to click two squares to the left of a chess piece, which makes the first two columns on the board unselectable.

As for Opera, it was just a hot mess.

Is there anything at all that I can do to make this site run correctly on my Maemo 4 tablet?

Also, to add on this thread, Tascbase is a really nice chess engine that can run under Dosbox.

Well, I played my first game on that website I posted above.

It's actually works fairly good. There's still not a perfect browser I have found for it though.

I thought I was pretty awesome by getting a checkmate, down a queen, and only taking a couple of pawns.

I love to bum rush one side of the board. *lol*

Anyway, after it was over, it will point out all of the innumerable mistakes you've made for deeper study.

Apparently I made plenty of them. *lol*

The D-Pad works perfectly to review the game, plus it will also show the best moves at points of error.

Additionally, it has plenty of statistics to review as well, including your opponent.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/714...2022122242.png

It has about 58,000 chess puzzles and also chess tactics too.

You should check it out.

I know it's a paying site, but what it offers, there's not much reason to subscribe for this unless you're a chess die hard.

Anyway, I was bored just now and wanted to share more of this with you guys. :)

I just found my new favorite web site. :)

http://chesstempo.com/

It's another one that while registration is free, it also offers a paid membership though I don't see much of a reason for this just yet.

I'm completely addicted to the Chess Tactics puzzles. I played these for hours yesterday with joy while watching my chess rating climb and fall. :)

http://i40.tinypic.com/34s08dv.png

http://i40.tinypic.com/34rbzpw.png

Loads of options... I actually prefer the board much bigger, pic not shown of this.

It only works in Microb and also make sure to have your preferences set to click then click.

Drag and drop doesn't work well at all.

Anyway, if anyone signs up for either one of these sites, set us up with a match.

I'll get an instant notification through email.

My username is Steffenfield at both places.

Kind regards.

Re: Flash Chess & Garnet VM (Palm) Chess

Has anyone signed up over at chesstempo yet?

The tactic puzzles are all brilliantly well done.

So far, this is my current record.

Correct: 128 Incorrect: 101

Needless to say, I stink at them. :)

Another thing I've enjoyed on the tablet is also just watching videos. :)

Something like this:

Does anyone have any good YouTube chess subscriptions?

Can I install this newer version of Xboard?
http://maemo-apps.org/usermanager/se...1ed8d7dd649c52

If so, what might be the steps for this?

Re: Flash Chess & Garnet VM (Palm) Chess

Okay, last question...

What's a good place to play chess online through a web browser?

You know, custom board, colors, pieces, tournaments, game analysis, and instant email notifications?

The two sites I have mentioned previously really requires premium memberships.
