[Announce] VICE for N900

Hi,

I am happy to announce that my port of VICE is available in extras-devel.

It is tested *only* on N900, might work on other Maemo's as well.

Few words before you go:
-Application is in extras-devel, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
-Only Commodore64 (x64) emulation is tested, others (xvic,x128 etc) are also available from terminal
-Tap screen to get into control menu
-Fn key does not work in emulation
-Sound is unstable, you might get buffer overflow or similar error, re-enable sound from menu->sound settings->sound (*)

Wow! That's awesome Barfly! :D

Back in the day, I made some pretty fun games using 6502 assembly language but all those were stored on tape and I'll probably never see them again.

But hey, I always get sentimental when I can revisit some of the old classic electronics I owned in the past.

Good job!

You made no mention to what tablet this supports.

Is it too late to say that this is only good for us Diablo users? :)

Re: [Announce] VICE for N900

@Addison

It *should* work at least on N810.

ps. good luck in finding those tapes ;)

Dang. I'm that drunk already?

I didn't even see the word "N900" in your thread. :(

Honestly, I wouldn't even have the first clue as how to transfer those tapes to a Windows PC.

But yeah, I'll give this a try sometime tomorrow. Sounds like it could be a blast reliving the past! :D

Many thanks!

Check http://perso.numericable.fr/ckckck/C64.html you'll find "How to transfer a C64 tape on a PC ?"

Great site!

I'll definitely be giving that a full read tomorrow.

Thanks again Barfly and welcome to the forums here! :D

Current version in extras-devel doesnt seem to work :(

Meanwhile you can use the version found in http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...el/vice/2.2.0/

Re: [Announce] VICE for N900

Fantastic. Been waiting for this, and the emulation seems very good also!
Guess it's just some of the usual details left then, a nicer virtual keyboard and settings page.

Very nice work of this vice port indeed! Thanks!
:)

I'd really love to try this out, but my /rootfs is getting tight these days with dev software.

Is VICE optified?

As said the Fn key does not work in emulator mode, you have to use the virtual keyboard (menu->virtual keyboard) for extra characters

Re: [Announce] VICE for N900

Oh sorry. Didn read that.
Do you think there is a way to enable the Fn Key?

Sure is, it's already working in the menu mode, didn't have time to dig into emulator keyhandler yet.

Hmmm... I just installed the .deb you specified in your first post since you said the one up on the extras-devel repo is broken.

Problem is that after I installed, my /rootfs shot up to 96% used. To be fair, I was already at like 90%, but still...

Removing VICE immediately put me back to my previous /rootfs usage levels.

Are you sure this package is optified?

The maemo builder version has to be non-optified then :( My locally built version is 100% optified.

[edit] Darn, I noticed that I had "all" instead of "auto" in debian/optify file. I will fix this to next release, sorry for the hassle!

Wow, this is great that Vice is finally working with n900!!! Great job Barfly! :D

Long time wanted to have reasonable good C64 emulation in portable format - now it is here! MUST for all 8-bit fans!

Unfortunately it is maermo builder version. I have already prepared new (hopefully fixed) version, which is also already built, should be on it's way to maemo-devel right now.

Can you tell us the version number of the corrected version so we can verify when it's safe to install from extras-devel?

Does it support zip roms?

Re: [Announce] VICE for N900

This package includes the entire set of commodore rom images (have a look at /opt/maemo/usr/lib/vice). Are you really sure maemo.org has a license to redistribute these?

Otherwise you might want to remove this pretty fast ...

Re: [Announce] VICE for N900

Just got it, pretty cool. However, I noticed that while sound is enabled by default, I don't hear anything. :(

One question, where do we go enable or disable 1394 emulation? I needed to toggle this to run certain roms in the past on S60's and S80's Frodo C64 emulator.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I got that wrong. It might not have been 1394 emulation, but it was a four digit number, I just can't remember what and I don't have an S60 device anymore to check...

Also noticed with VICE that I have to rename my ROM to end in ".d64" even if it's already a d64 disc formatted ROM image otherwise VICE won't run it.

The virtual keyboard does not seem to include quotation mark ". I can of course use "autostart image" from the menu but typing LOAD "*",8,1 would be quite nostalgic :D

Got it working now! This is fantastic. My two favorite pieces of hardware ever right in my hand!!! (N900 and C64)

Am I the only one with these problems:

- Virtual keyboard disappears when tapped.

-Joystick Keyboard map (to arrow keys and Lshift) not working

Looks wonderful otherwise! Thanks

Go to menu and click on drive and you will see true emulation i think thats the option you are after just click on it and switch it off then run your roms.

Switching this option off also makes games load faster and if you want it off all the time just goto settings manager and save settings.

Does anyone know how to store the rom path???

At the moment virtual keyboard is only to access some of the special keys with N900 keyboard ( like c= r/s etc )

Arrow keys and left shift works when you select Keyset as a joystick device and define keys in Define keysets

Go to machine settings / joystick settings then define keysets and change keyset 1 to your own configuration then change joystick device in port 2 to keyset 1.and away you go.

2 Attachment(s)
I'll try that Bazza :)

edit: That did not work. I load the game and it looks like this.

Attachment 8363

The game seems to load fine and then i press 'space' and this happens

Attachment 8364

Then i can't get any further. Did the remapping like you said.
