[March 2010 Council Election] Voting Now Open!

Dave Neary, our hard-working docmaster, has posted the following on his blog:

Quote:

The voting tokens have just been sent out for the Q1 2010 Maemo Community Council elections.

I already have over 100 bounced emails, so if you think that you should have a vote and you have not received an email with a voting token yet, please send me an email or leave a comment, I will look up your Maemo username and send you on the voting token/email combo we have on record so that you can vote.

Voting runs until March 30th – you can find more information about the election and the council in the Maemo wiki.
Please make sure your e-mail address at maemo.org is correct!

And please be sure to VOTE!

Just a note about this voting system:

Your first choice is the most important. Only if your first choice is eliminated will your second choice be considered.

I'll also re-post the Election timeline (from this post), with the finished portions crossed off.

Voting open for Q1 2010 elections

Hi all,

For those who had not noticed yet, voting is now open for the Q1 2010 Maemo Community Council elections.

If you had a maemo.org account created on or before Dec 31 2009 and 10 karma or more at the start of the election process, then you are entitled to vote. Even if you linked your Maemo accounts after Dec 31, but you had created your Talk account before then, you were eligible to vote.

What follows is the instruction email which those of you who qualify to vote should have received yesterday. If you did not, please contact me here or at dneary@m.o, and I will either explain why you didn't get a token, or issue you your token (about 150 tokens bounced).

----

Sorry dude! After I asked you to create the thread, Niels said "There's nothing on Talk", so I took the initiative (but didn't see your thread first).

Dave.

I corrected it on maemo.org/vote - but I've been copying & pasting the candidate list around the place & forgot!

Sorry.

Dave.

Re: [March 2010 Council Election] Voting Now Open!

Even though I'm a rusty old member here and running for re-election, I want to encourage people to vote for newcomer candidates. The council truly needs a healthy mix of new and old to both move forward and avoid repeating mistakes of the past.

Good fortunate to all candidates!

The rule is "maemo.org account". This includes:
  • Garage accounts (i.e. you have a page at http://maemo.org/profile/view/nick). These are the "normal" maemo.org accounts.
  • Bugzilla (i.e. you have a log in on http://bugs.maemo.org/ with your email address and can point to 3 month old activity).
  • Talk (i.e. here ;-))

If you now have a (Garage) maemo.org account, created it within the last 3 months but have had another maemo.org account which is older; please let Dave know.

...and don't forget to vote!

Re: [March 2010 Council Election] Voting Now Open!

I just want to point out that there's no way you can have karma if you don't have a maemo.org account. I make lots of exceptions for people who can show that they've been doing stuff for more than 3 months (most recently someone who started using Bugzilla in December but only registered for maemo.org in January), but I made it clear at the start of the election process that there was a cut-off date for having a maemo.org account, and it was the beginning of the election process.

Cheers,
Dave.

LAST CHANCE: GO VOTE!

These are not official results, the official results will be confirmed by Dave Neary (dneary)

We can see that the amount of votes cast drops very rapidly. We can definitely see that some people just want to use the 10 sliding votes, whereas some have very specific ideas of whom their vote should go to.

Average of votes per voter: 6.173803526
Voters who gave 10 candidates: 144
Voters who gave 9 candidates: 5
Voters who gave 7 candidates: 6
Voters who gave 7 candidates: 11
Voters who gave 6 candidates: 27
Voters who gave 5 candidates: 54
Voters who gave 4 candidates: 41
Voters who gave 3 candidates: 50
Voters who gave 2 candidates: 36
Voters who gave 1 candidates: 23

Congratulations to everyone.

And here are the results as generated per OpenSTV, using the Fractional Transfer STV Count (Droop-Static-While method)

Code:

Maemo.org uses Fractional Transfer STV with Droop-Static-Whole threshold (use Options -> Show All Methods to enable it), but the final outcome is the same in this instance.

Thanks to all the candidates and voters. Still disappointed at the turnout (only 399 ballots) though.

Thanks lma, wasn't sure, so that's why I ran a few of them. As I just said in #maemo, it's amazing how little difference there is.

Why again are we using STV, if the impact is so small? Or is it so small because the turnout is so ridiculously unbalanced?
