Been using the beta for a little while now on my n800. Canola seems really great. Only feature I'm really missing is podcast downloading (currently you can only stream), which the text on their new homepage implies will be in a future release. Keep up the great work, Canola devs!

IMHO:rolleyes: , when using a device like the n770 of the n800 a non-squint, non-stylus interface is a huge benefit. If this were a spreadsheet, the interface would be crap, but, this does exactly what it should do. It offers your media in a clear easy to use manner.

The only thing missing is the ability to minimize it (at least while playing music).

Hi Hempla, I can for sure answer you since canola concept was created by me, so I can tell you exactly what I told everyone.

Maemo devices, are great because they are open, and that gives you the power to transform them in something else. We used them daily and it just didn't feel right for Media consumption. Sometime you're on the bus, walking.. there's no room for stylus based usage. Why? because you need precision for that. And finger usage on GTK / hildon is getting better, but still clumsy.
Also to simple media consumption there's no need for a FULL Featured Windows / real desktop metaphor. You want fast access to your media and you really want to consume media, not browser on the internet on that UI.

This is the UI concept, and was very well received by the Users. But of course we did a lot of things under the hood!
1) it's a really stable software. We wanted to provide not a fancy but also Solid application
2) it's incredible flexible. We can plug new backends, create new features pretty fast now
3) We try not only to use but also contribute to the platform, and also to other projects (helping them, sending bug reportings, and even patching some UPnP servers.
4) We improved a lot the Shared media experience, so you can for example slideshow pictures from one upnp server while listening to music from other.
5) We ported libdmap to maemo, and released it for all other devices, so now you are able to see Iphoto sharing, rhythmbox sharings, Tangerine sharings and also Itunes(not 7 now).

In the end, I think it's like frontrow for the OSX or a simplified version of media center for windows. You just don't need your full desktop.. just want the media, easy and simple.

Geatgazoo :

You mean using it while minimized right? because you can press the home button and use maemo while canola stills on the "background". it's there minimized but you can't use it because there's was no way to create a interface with the same usage concept if it was in the application space (touch spots would be in the middle of the interface, smaller, clumsy).

Re: Canola for the N800 (and the n770) is officially launched

As this is the first time ever I've tried Canola, my questions might be really really stupid. Nevertheless:

I find myself storing more and more photos on NaB00 (my N800) and Canola's interface is indeed both very powerful and extremely intuitive, but the possibilities with the picture viewer seem to me rather limited: I can get either a small, static non-fullscreen picture, or a slideshow fullscreen that I cannot stop or change. Also, there seems to be no possibility to change the orientation of the pictures, nor any zoom facility for that matter. Did I overlook those or are they absent?

My suggestions (at least for the picture viewer):
- make it possible to go manually through the pictures in fullscreen and give more user control for the slideshow parameters
- incorporate zooming facility
- being able to switch from landscape to portrait would be very nice.

Overall, a very nice program. I absolutely love the wood theme (I wish someone would make a general steampunk theme for the Internet Tablets. Maybe I'll give it a shot myself...)

Re: Canola for the N800 (and the n770) is officially launched

Is this the beta2, released a few days ago?
If TRUE, there is some very strange behaviour with that release. When I try to connect to the configuration page on the webserver it does not work while I am offline, although the webserver is beeing accessed on localhost. The "Select Connection" popup is beeing pop-uped every time

Karel, you can stop/start the slide show by clicking the icon in the bottom right hand corner of the interface. You can then manually step through your pictures in either thumb view or full view etc.

I thought Canola understood portrait or landscape dimensions of each picture and then rotated accordingly, is this not happening? (I have no larger portrait pictures to check this ATM?), I do not believe there is yet a manual rotate option and zoom etc.

Your suggestions are good, we need to pop them into the feature request forum of Canola if they are not there already. https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?at...25&func=browse

Good day to all.

I am a complete newb to linux and my tablet , tho learning more daily. I really need some guidance on installing canola specifically the libgcrypt issues of not being installed. I would be lying if i said i understand installing repositories other than thru the add apps wizard. Any kind guidance would be greatly appreciated until i get my feet wet somemore.

Thanks in advance to a great community.

Although the UI is nice, but what about the FM radio or improve decoder? The problem with the n800 when playing movie is that it's a bit under power. Also, I just try it, and it freeze when I tried to fast forward the movie(that I encoded specifically for n800) that play fine in Media Player.

Does this use the standard N800 codecs and media player and provide a clean front end (love it by the way!) or is it an entirely new media player?

Good work guys, this is the kind of App that makes the N800 great

It's "just" a front-end.

"http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/repository/bora" does not exist. There is "http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/repository/", but it doesn't seem to have anything for bora.

I was overjoyed to see this! Installation went VERY well for me-- I wish every 770/N800 app had such a process!

I especially like the full screen fading controls-- very, very nice design. My only gripe is that I have to use the arrow controls to navigate through library options instead of simply clicking them on the screen. Minor beef though. Overall, nicely done!

Aside to itkach: use the .install file on the main page. It sets the repository up for you perfectly.

Playlists are extremely simple files.

It is simply a text file containing the paths to all the files you want to play ... one file per line.

You can use absolute paths (making it so that the playlist can be moved around) or relative to the location of the list (so if the playlist is in the same directory as the media files then it can just be a big list of the filenames you want to play with no paths).

The native media players on the Nokia ITs add a bunch of commented out stuff between each media file line and put the media files locations in URI format but will accept playlists in the more standard format.

There are playlist generators available for the NokITs. I can't comment on them since I have never used them. Redirecting find to a file via the command line does a pretty good job of making a playlist too :]

The note pad included with the NokITs isn't a good way to make playlists since it insists on saving your plain text as an html file. There are a few plain text editors available in the repositories.

Why don't you just use the one-click install file? The help page would appear to be incorrect, this is the content of the one-click install file:

Code:

[install]
repo_name = Canola
repo_deb = deb http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/repository-beta2/770 mistral user
repo_deb_3 = deb http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/repository-beta2/bora bora user
package  = canola

Thanks, .install worked fine. At first I didn't notice the "one click install for all devices" button, it's too green on green :) Providing incorrect installation instructions on the "Installing Canola" page, though, is still not a very good thing.

Re: Canola for the N800 (and the n770) is officially launched

Well, Canola is definitely very cool, stylus-less navigation is very convenient. I have one complain though, about order in which songs appear in audio albums (Media Player has the same problem). The songs are sorted alphabetically by song name from the tag. In my files these names are not prefixed by number (file names are), so the resulting song order makes no sense whatsoever and completely ruins listening experience. I guess there are albums where this is not very important, but there are plenty where it is. Does anybody know if there's a workaround?

Okay guys, can anyone help me get Canola installed? Before you ask: yes, I tried the install button on the official Canola website - I get the same error every time:

libgcrypt11
libgpg-error0

are missing.

I have read the install instructions on the Canola site and my N800 already has the 2 repositories mentioned added:

Nokia Catalogue
Nokia Catalogue (3rd party software)

I have 2 other repositories in application manager - added I suspect because I installed xterm and the to do list app, these are:

GPE Calendar
maemo-hackers

I really do not know what else to try.

Any suggestions?

There may be a solution for this in the near future - from the Canola FAQ (3rd item):

Quote:

Q: Why can't I select any item in the list, only the one under the "focus" area?
A: Canola was built thinking not only of the tablet but also for non-touchscreen possibilities. Thus it was made from scratch to work also with simple remote controls and etc. Placing selection in all items required a lot more user visual feedback to be usable, so we chose this simpler way. In our usability tests multiple selection activated got users lost or feeling uncomfortable browsing their media. If you wanna be able to do it, and know how to set Gconf strings, check back often for we'll soon place here the command to allow it.

Not to mention making a playlist from a text editor is something of a pita. :D

Okay, so I had a very similar problem. First I couldn't get Python 2.5 to install which drove me nuts and then I couldn't get Canola installed. Whether I need Python to run Canola I have no Idea. But still, It just popped up a dialog saying "Could not install xxxx". Extremely frustrated and after numerous installs, uninstalls and reboots, I downloaded "Nokia Internet Tablet software update wizard" and reinstalled N800 from scratch. All my old programs and settings got lost but with a little more "know how" about how the N800 works I got everything working pretty quick. I started installing Python 2.5 and then Canola and everything went super. No I only got the essential stuff installed on my N800. No more trouble for me :D.

Canola is great by the way and when you guys can get it working with different videocodecs so that it will play my movies, I'll send you a gift!!!

Im so frustrated! Mine keeps on saying "unable to install canola". I have dried dozens of times.

So you are saying we must flash the Nokia BIOS all over again to make Canola work? Yikes, that would delete all my programs. It would be time consuming to install everything back again. Or should I wait for Canola to come out of beta and install it by then. This sucks.

I tried installing canola but the download always gets hungup. This also happens when I try to refresh.

What's up?

I love the n800 but installation of programs is ridiculously complicated; it reminds me of the early days of DOS. Mainstream users will never put up with this.

Hi,

I installed the program. It looks super cool. It also works great. I have a question.

Does the program play WMA files. The player is not scanning these files.
I also installed on my 770 and the player is not scanning them.
Is this file supported?

On the N800 media player it does not scan all of my music files from my SD
card. It does pick up about 68 songs out of 170 songs.
Thanks,
JN

iFrank 2007-02-21 05:19

Re: Canola for the N800 (and the n770) is officially launched

Tom T., you can use Playlist Creator, which scans your 770/N800 and makes a single playlist of all audio files or use the default audio/media player and build your own custom playlist(s).

I don't know about a compatible application on XP.

iFrank 2007-02-21 05:33

Re: Canola for the N800 (and the n770) is officially launched

itkach, Canola (as of Beta2) sorts and plays album songs based on their track number and if the tag is empty, then, it sorts them based on song title/name tag.

So, you might want to fill track number tag using one of those file name to tag parsers or just manually.

Canola plays the same file formats the built in media player plays. Could you play WMA files before Canola?

ftao russ and beefy

as I seemed to have the same prob and no one seemed to be able to help, a simple re-boot (ie turning it off/on) did the trick. seemed to solve the problem of the appication manager saying it couldn't refresh because it was up to date. try it and thn try the "one click install" and hopefully it'll work for you.

as far as the app itself, it loks lovely, but unless you've tagged your mp3's and don't use wavs it doesn't really add much functionality as far as I can see.

I have too many files that have names in the format "[track number] - [song name]", but have empty track number tag, and a lot of them are on CDs (cast in stone:) ). Changing all these files is not really a usable option. If track number tag is empty, sorting by file name or no sorting at all is far better option then sorting alphabetically by name. Alphabetical list of songs is pretty much useless.

Thanks very much for the reply and suggestion, but no go for me...still fails completely.

I removed the Canola repository (from a previous failed install attempt using the one click install on the canola web page), then restarted my N800, then tried the one click install again...

Still failed with the same dependency missing error. Even though I have the 2 listed repositories.

I guess Canola won't work for everyone...

Massive shame that...it looks so nice too, it could have been the killer app for the N800...
