N900 no longer detects my home router?!

My N900 can no longer detect my home internet router, it worked yesterday and the day before to connect to the net using my phone, but has suddenly stopped-it simply states it cannot find any of my saved net connections, despite the wifi settings being the same and still saved in my phone. I know the router is working and using the same settings as saved in my phone, as I am connecting to the router right now to use this laptop online.

One thing notable is that although my phone cannot even list my working connection, it keeps listing all the neighbours own routers.. around 8... then they disappear and the list starts again - too many routers on at once perhaps?... and/or a N900 bug? I will try later on but its been like this all day.

Try to restart the router?

restart router.

99% of the times it's the routers fault. I have the same problem with my laptop and my phone. From time to time it decides not to show on one of the devices.

Also try restarting the N900.

Re: N900 no longer detects my home router?!

Ive tried restarting the router and phone 3 times now, no change, "no saved connections available", yet its listing/relisting all the neighbours home hubs. Ive also tried switching the router on to connect before switching on the phone itself, and vice versa, but that makes no difference either. Eventually it states "network connection error. try again?". Perhaps I could try deleting my saved connection settings, but if the hub still doesnt show then Im stuck.

Its probably a phone bug with too many neighbours routers on at once for the phone to handle, with it constantly re-listing everyone, but the only odd thing is if it was that, my home hub never shows, despite the "connected" light being on the hub itself and working on here using the laptop. the only thing i can probably do now is to try later on, if far less hubs are on and it works then its probably too many causing the problem. If it was the routers fault then surely it wouldnt work with the laptop either

Re: N900 no longer detects my home router?!

I have a cheap free Talk Talk router, so I guessed it could also be the router - I managed to eventually (just over 3 mins ago) get it to detect the router, by searching using my phone at the extact same time as switching on the router, standing right beside it! it then appears in the phone list. still odd though how it was working for the last couple days, yet today nothing would appear at all. it still does not connect, the phone lists the router but there is no signal according to the phone, despite it being fine on the laptop

update - i constantly clicked on the talk talk router now listed in the phone, and the signal strength got stronger and stronger - its now working.... hmmmm. will also test the mobile tomorrow to see if it connects or still plays up

I have since this afternoon EXACTLY the same problem. The connection (simple Motorola Surfboard cable modem connected to an Apple Airport) works perfectly fine on my laptop, but is suddenly not seen anymore by the N900. My network doesn't show up on my phone, although it does list all the neighbours' connections.
All was still OK last night, I did not make any changes on my phone since.
I deleted my connection on the phone & re-entered it, I rebooted the phone & the router, but no improvements: the N900 simply can't see it.

What to do? Who can help me?

Switch channels. =)

My Airport is now set at Channel 13 (Automatic). What channel should I change this to? And why? In other words: what effect does it have?

Can affect signal, I'm not sure how does the autom. channel pick work. Anyway, I've set this manually. Try different channels?

It's unbelievable but the channel-change worked! I changed it from Automatic (13) to Ch 3, and lo & behold: the N900 picked it up.

I guess this is one of those mysteries?
Thanks!

Not really. If a lot of people are on the same channel they will interfere with each other. The N900 uses intensive power saving so will try to minimise the traffic it generates so naturally is more sensitive to this than a laptop.

Chances are you could also fix the issue by switching down the WiFi power saving settings on the N900, but that would have a large hit on battery life.

Re: N900 no longer detects my home router?!

I switched from UK to Global firmware. My N900 now no longer works with channel 13 (perhaps 12 too, not sure). In fact, I'd already switched to Global FW, then moved my wifi from 6 to 13. The N900 followed the wifi up to channel 13, but when I rebooted it, it wouldn't find the access point. I'm now using channel 11.

Hope this clears things up a bit, although I don't understand why the N900 with Global FW followed the access point and worked when it changed from 6 to 13 initially, before the reboot. Perhaps that is a bug.

Channel 13 is not an authorized channel for wifi in many parts of the world (U.S. included). It's probably built into the global firmware to not communicate on that channel so that it can pass the various regulatory hurdles for sale in those respective countries that utilize the global firmware by default. Just a theory...

Re: N900 no longer detects my home router?!

Interesting theory, but why does communication via Channel 13 work for a certain amount of time and then suddenly not anymore?

Btw: how do I know if what firmware I have, i.e. USA or the global?
