UK South Meetup - Easter time

Ok, just got round to posting, but how does a South England meetup sound?

I will be in minehead from 3rd - 8th April (2010). and was hoping for a meetup on either:
Dates
  • Sunday 4th
  • Monday 5th
  • Tuesday 6th April
  • Wednesday 7th April
(Either/any is good for me.....)

Time: - I'm thinking evening is better for most, but not too late so people can get home?
So i can get there from 1pm and stay till about 10pm - but would rather a 2/3 hour slot in there somewhere

Location choices (Quick overhead map link) :
  • Bridgewater
  • Taunton
  • Tiverton
  • Barnstaple
  • (Exeter at a push)

Please state your date/time and location preferences :D - and hopefully we can set a date in the diary :D
Everyone is welcome with any device, or no device :D (Or people who want to see the N900 in action!)
I can bring my laptop if people want to see how i code in python/qt... (Bearing in mind i am new to it and i blag my way around!)

Anyway! - let the comments, suggestions and clever people roll :D :D :D

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Nuffin clever from here. I'm working all those days (including Easter Day).

My trusty n900 tells me that I could possibly skive off early on Tuesday 7th as I don't actually have any appointments that afternoon (yet).

However I am over 100 miles west of Exeter (yes there is life out here, though whether it's civilised life...). Obviously, the further West the better: Bridgwater is a three hour drive each way.

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

i can prob come further west, any suggestions? :)

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

bump....

Anyone else in the south area who would fancy a meet up? :D :D

Kathy - are you free on the saturday? (3rd)
I'm aiming to get to minehead for about 3pm, but could head out for a few hours after... (Need to have a bit of a change, as it will be a 4/5 hour drive in the morning)

Great idea noobmonkey, I couldn't get there but the thought of a group of N900s in Barnstaple gave me a chuckle. Hope you guys make it.

I'm voting for Tues 7th, around teatimeish. If I quit work at lunchtime, I can get up the A30 a fair stretch.

The question being how far west? Would you guys consider coming as far as the Little Chef at Jn 27?

For that matter, this is a Very Useful Website.

(and yay! for post #2000 being a community one)

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

awww that's a pity :( - more the merrier! (I'm going to check the 3g signal this morning and will report back at good pub locations! - hehe
Still hoping for a few more though :D :D

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Looks like we're going with Tuesday afternoon then? I sadly can't make Wednesday om. Could do Thursday afternoon, though.

Pick us a Nice Pub, NoobMonkey, one where you can sit and relax while the rest of us gather. If I leave work for about 12:30-1:00 ish, it's about 2 and a half hours (nearer three to Bridgewater). I'll stay till Walkies time (about 5pm) walk the terrierist and then head home about 6ish. If that's ok?

Hi Alls - sorry been very busy!!!

Still planning for this meetup to occur! - Havnt had time to do pub hunting but looks like the tiverton area is near the junction Kathy mentioned? - few wireless pubs in there :D

I will have a proper look tomorrow and paste a few links in here.

Just three of us?

Anyone else? :D

Annoyingly it looks like my weekend plans may have changed due to visitor supposed to be coming tommorrow possibly now arriving (and leaving) a day later... I will know for sure by tommorrow and will post and let you know...

noobmonkey 2010-04-04 07:37

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Right..... now we are down to two? :( :(

Some Suggestions:
TIVERTON AREA
http://www.blackhorseinnexeter.co.uk/ - situated on the old A30, ½ mile from the M5 junction 29 and 1 mile from Exeter International Airport.

Verbeer Manor - To find us take the B3181 from J27 or J28 of the M5 & follow the signs for Willand.

The Wyndham Arms (says free wifi!) - The Wyndham Arms is located in the beautiful Mid-Devon village of Kentisbeare. Kentisbeare is found between Cullompton and Honiton from J28 of the M5.

OAKHAMPTON AREA
Seven Stars - just off the A30 between Exeter and Okehampton

(started looking at Bude etc as well - but running out of time this morning)
Anyway - any suggestions or choices :D ?

RevdKathy 2010-04-04 08:26

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Ooh! Okehampton area looks very reachable. Though at this rate it could be just you and me... find somewhere romantic! :p

noobmonkey 2010-04-04 09:03

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

hahaha! i think we need our very own twitter updates for the massives :)
no one else up for it? should only be 1.5 hours from me, ish, so reachable!!

zail 2010-04-04 09:32

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

<sigh> looks like we are having more unplanned easter visitors who will be arriving at unspecified times today, but post where u decide and meeting time and if i can get away i will! all places sound good to me - and sound like they might serve cake! lol.

noobmonkey 2010-04-04 10:14

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

zail - i will even buy you a cake if you make it :D :D - but technically I'm only in minehead - so could also do a separate cake-up/meet-up on Wednesday :) - as not going home till thursday

Anyway, Kathy - take your pic of places for Tuesday so we can set that in stone so to speak :)

zail 2010-04-04 14:30

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

unfortunatley i'm back at work wednesday.. so will try most heartly for tues.. Partner thinks i am mad.. to quote.. 'so you want to meet up with some other people cos they have the same PHONE as you?' i did point out there was the possibility of cake which did lead to more understanding but still some headshaking!

RevdKathy 2010-04-04 17:39

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

The Seven Stars would be nearest for me (Currently trying to work out where you leave the A30) - I might even get there while they're still serving lunch, depending on how early I can get away.

But any of the suggestions is reachable. I worked another two and a half hours today, so they owe me some time off.

And Zail, we'll definitely run to cake (if they do it) if you get there. I remember the first tech meet-up I went to: my sister was going ape at the thought that I was going to meet up with a bunch of blokes I'd never actually met in a pub somewhere! Tell your wife it's quite the done thing!

zail 2010-04-04 23:01

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

ok.. the cake .. err I mean tech meetup is looking more likely for me will know for sure tommorrow! What time are teh two of you aiming to arrive and is the Seven Stars the preferred venue?

imprezwift 2010-04-04 23:26

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

If it's the seven stars on alphington road, exeter you're thinkin of...I wouldn't recommend it. wifi is suspect and there's virtually no mobile reception let alone 3.5g on any network I've tested...it's kinda in a black hole! :( if venturing into exeter there's 4 wetherspoons to choose from. also most of exeter has 3Mbit voda reception, so throw in some Joiku magic and...;)

RevdKathy 2010-04-05 06:47

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

I'm pretty sure the Seven Stars at South Tawton is a different one. It has a completely different website. Thanks for the warning, though. :)

noobmonkey 2010-04-05 08:32

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

hmmmmm there really is no 3g there! :| - http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...pageID=OS_0200

really it looks like exeter or tiverton? :D

RevdKathy 2010-04-05 11:44

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

How about the Poachers Inn, Ide, just this side of Exeter?

"Our location is also ideal for those informal business lunches and meetings when customers can take advantage of our free WiFi internet access to catch up on what’s going on back at the office. "

Haven't checked voda, but Orange 3g is 'good'. :)

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

sounds good to me!
are we saying 2pm onwards? :)

zail 2010-04-05 17:41

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

sounds good to me too as long as I can get away - I guess I'm about 50/50 at this point... looks like it's between an hour and a half and 2 hours drive for me (depending on the state of the glorious M5 south and how lost I get!) so if you're aiming to get there about 2ish I'll hopefully be not long behind.. I'll post on here to let you know as soon as I do... :)

imprezwift 2010-04-05 18:01

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Ide shouldn't be a problem for anyone, it's pretty well signed and a stones throw from the A30. It's only 10 minutes from me as well but I fear I'll be sound asleep :D my beloved graveyard shift...

Good luck all :)

noobmonkey 2010-04-05 18:05

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Ok so we are set! - just waiting for Kathy to agree :D

I'll prob get there early just in case (bout 1:30)- and will have my laptop and n900 out - so you shouldn't be able to miss me ;)

about 5'9, dark brown hair and most likely sun glasses on my head :D

RevdKathy 2010-04-05 18:55

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

I'll be there as soon as I can. Aiming to leave Redruth as soon after midday as I can. I shall have the post-bank-holiday traffic to contend with (going home up the A30) so time will be flexible.

Easily spotted: a woman of a Certain Age, 4' 9", hair in a topknot. (Think midget librarian)

noobmonkey 2010-04-05 19:00

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

hahaha, should be a great meetup! :D :D

If anyone else fancies joining us the location is - Poachers Inn, Ide
Map and location details here - http://www.poachersinn.co.uk/location.aspx

Hee hee.. sounds like a plan :)

If I make it (which I really really hope to) I'll be the confused looking 5ft one (after getting lost!) with messy hair (probably) and glasses wearing jeans and a fleece clutching an n900! :)

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

Okay so I feel a bit guilty for not showing since it's so close (and a bit nervous about being hunted down) so I'm gonna try to make it out for a little while.

I'll be 6'4" (including mohawk :D) and most likely with a beer in my hand before the door closes behind me!

noobmonkey 2010-04-06 07:58

Re: UK South Meetup - Easter time

haha!!!!
wow, 4 of us.... (Unless Kathy brings the bears?!) :D
Will take me 1.5/2 hours, so gonna leave here at 11:30 :D

All too far for me - the Isle of Wight is where I am, that's what I'd call South!
