[Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Hi,

It's been there for a few days already, but in non-free extras-devel you can find a new app for N900 to calculate your routes using public transport in Helsinki Area.

It uses the HSL.fi service API to do it.

I have just recently uploaded a new version using the new PR1.2 SDK. So let's hope that we get the PR1.2 soon so it becomes usable.

Weheey great app :)

Can't wait to see it once we receive the PR 1.2. update.

great stuff!

The application is very nice. I really enjoy using it. I'm looking forward getting the new PR 1.2. update.

This inspires me to think, what would it be like, if it had routing like features to guide you to the busses and then to wake you up just before you arrive to the stop near your home.

You can bet, this is one of my favourite applications. It helps a lot.

Hi.. I have some plans to make the alarms, and also to show the map with the stops. but havent found the time to do so yet.

Damn wish I could lend a helping hand in code or smthn for this app, as this is a service I use every single day.

what is it like in practice?

i want something similar for Oulu :p

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

I downloaded it now that I got pr1.2

Why is the "GPS" button grayed out?

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Hey,

just dled from extras and it looks really nice!

But i'm wondering the same question, is the gps function disabled or what is the deal?

And also, would it be possible to somehow integrate this thing with the n900's map application? You know like it would show your route on the map or somithing... Now that would be awesome!

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

The gps function isnt implemented yet. It is just planned. The same as the map. I hope I will have time to do something soon.

excellent app

It's a brilliant app, thank you ilbambino for making it. Of course it shows that it's in early development and it needs polishing, but it does its job already. Hopefully you have time to implement both GPS and maps, and also polish the app graphically.

Hi there is a small bug in the application. it does not let bookmark the new address. hope you will fix it soon. also it would be nice if it shows metro and train schedules as well

Thanks for the great application

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Hi
I know it isnt very clear. But you can only make favs on the destination. Type, press enter, select one and press the add fav.

Yes it needs some work, but at least now works.

btw it already works with metro and train...

lubabula 2010-06-20 10:31

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Also it would be great if you could choose arrival time, not only time when you want your bus to leave.

Goal is to make it like www.reittiopas.fi someday? Same functions?

I did something slightly related: a simple app that shows Helsinki trams and buses moving real-time on a map:

I'll keep this off Extras until we get caching questions sorted out with the data provider. Before that, you can grab a copy from http://github.com/bergie/buscatcher

Totally awesome yet simple app. I'm totally jealous that I did not thought that :-(

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

For me maybe one of the greatest features would be just this realtime view of where the bus is in relation to the stops. I don't think that even the GPS lock to provide the info for "from" is as useful. I like to have precise control over the stop and not necessarily have it chosen for me.

The data feed I'm working with (see the Qaiku thread) includes locations of all stops. So some UI elements could be added that would allow you to center the map to any stop instead of your current location. Filtering the map to display only the trams and buses you're interested in might be another idea.

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

There's a bug in Como Llego that could be called serious?

The arrival time marked for routes is NOT when you arrive at your destination but when a bus/train/tram/metro arrives to your last station. So eg, if you have to walk for 1-2km the arrival time is NOT accurate.

Is this intentional or a bug?

ilbambino 2010-09-01 19:33

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

I did it intentional. But the problem is that the UI isn't very clear. Now that the winter is coming I want to redo some of the things there.

As an occasionally drunk Espoo citizen I am eagerly waiting a "Get home" button. In this the home (end point of the journey) could be predefined and starting point would be taken from GPS. Do you have any plans to implement something like this?

The data provider got their issues solved so the app is now in extras-testing. Please vote!

Seems to work as advertised.

One feature request: it would be nice to have a marker (red dot, cross or something like that) visible for the current location. The location is of course in the middle of the map, but when I scroll the map it becomes less obvious and it gets difficult to see where I am standing related to the moving busses...

This would be the most usefull feature in a phone ever (including voice calls).

There could also be additional features to this. For example, if you use this feature so late in the night that public transportation is no longer having any suitable busses for you, the phone could automatically call to taxi central, your wife, or your mother to pick you up.

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

The automatic centering of the map to the current location is bit too aggressive to my taste. If you want just see how's the situation in other part of the city and scroll the map, the application takes you to the current location almost immediately. This makes the map scrolling quite frustrating.

I noticed that too. Maybe the centering could be optional?

It also needs a big kebab button that will guide you to the nearest fast-food place

I think for next version I'll add a "keep centered" toggle so you can switch between this and free scrolling. And definitely a position indicator for where you are.

I'm actually doing my own application for HSL.fi to learn some C++ and Qt. I'm mainly concentrating on creating a good looking GUI and I was just wondering if it would be possible to take a look at your work? I'd be more than happy to share my code and ideas, but at the moment my project is really in the starting grounds. Hopefully I can get something to work in a few weeks.

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Hi!

This is a call out to all people developing apps for Helsinki-region public transportation:

Right now the three best (and only?) apps for navigating the Helsinki City public transport are "Bus catcher", "Como Llego" and "ZouBa".

* Como Llego has maybe the best (most functional, clutterless) UI for simple "A to B" navigation with public transport.

* ZouBa is the only app with working (and well rounded out) GPS-guided location searching. Also the idea of setting a "home address" is brilliant, as it saves you from typing in the same address every day into the program.

* Bus Catcher has a cool feature of a map, on which you can see trams moving in real-time. A request was thrown out to show buses as well, and even though I don't how much information HSL gives out on buses' locations, I know that at least the 550-line all use constant GPS navigation. Maybe at least some of these lines could be implemented.

So my request is this:

Is there interest between you developers to combine the best bits of all these applications into one über app that has it all? The features of these apps seem enough to be that über app, as each app alone has only one piece of the puzzle.

Any interest in this?

Yes. Since my main motivation is to learn more QtQuick, I propose UI is QML and business logic in Qt/C++.

Max.

As already discussed over email, I'd propose a discussion/hack session in our office after the Xmas holidays. I assume everybody hacking on Helsinki journey planners is in town anyway ;)

Indeed. I'm back in town on the 17th.

I've mainly just started to learn my basics on C++/Qt and don't really have anything yet to show. Mainly I've just done a few simple prototypes to query the API and parse the XML. I've also done some UI sketches.

I'm also interested in QML, but as far as I know using QML would require you to create a date/time selector manually. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Even though I do not have anything to share at this moment, I'm interested in collaborating.

P.S. I just nearly shat my pants when I looked at the source code where you convert WGS84 to KKJ. Clearly my math skills are somehow rusty.

LOL. I didn't do that code - it was one of my colleagues who also set up the zouba repository. I think he got the algorithms from somewhere else too.

Re: [Announce] Como Llego - Helsinki Journey Planner

Some nice-to-haves:
  • When making a route plan, compare the scheduled times to the actual location of a tram (or bus, if info is available)
  • Make it possible to call a cab by SMS if there are no good route options
  • Map should show not only your location and destination, but also the available routes and currently moving trams

It seems that the new version of the HSL API has just arrived on beta testing. My username is not yet working though, but there seems to be a lot of new improvements (e.g. no WGS84 to KKJ2 calculation required).

Apparently, the WGS84 is still not working. This URL will give you error that coordinates are wrong:
