Microsoft would get angry and disable the world! then they would be angry as N900 doesn't have 3 hardware buttons.

Dude, Google before you post. WP7 can't multitask, can't copy/paste, and you cannot install apps from 3rd parties yet.
And why would you install something with missing functionality for smartphones on an almost-complete tablet?

MS is very strict regarding the hardware specs - the three hardware buttons they want to see on every Phone 7 device are "Start - Search - Back" plus a dedicated "camera button".

One of the BEST things about the N900 is that you CAN'T install WinMo 7.

Amma, dont take the comments personally - you just happen to be asking to install a closed system on an open phone so to speak :)

Allthough you can get windows 95/98 etc working on the device, they are not really usable.... Win7 is a different beast, and apart from it really not being at all usable even if someone could miraculously figure out how to port it, the phone itself is just not designed to run the micro-software. (And doesnt have the three h/w buttons) :D

If you are interested in a technical answer...

Well it depends really.

If Winmo7 mobile supports the same version of OMAP as the N900 has it could function in some sort of alternative boot environment, if that is even possible on the n900, with some minor tweaking...that's quite a big if though.

In short you can dream about it but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: Windows Phone 7 on N900??

Technically, a clever someone with too much time on his hands who is unable to leave a challenge alone, can probably make it possible through virtualization... If he could get his hands on Windows Phone 7. Lots of stuff have been run using virtualization, like Windows 95 and Android.

Experience suggests that would only happen quite some time from now, and only as a proof of concept that would not run very well beyond the fact that it run at all.

In practice, since this sort of OS frontier people no longer feel that Maemo is the future (while MeeGo is), it just will not happen at all.

No sir. really without any criticize. I am thankful to you ppl for answers and really appreciate for your concern to help.

If u can tell onething more, actually, its my first experience to work on Maemo. I used Microsoft Windows always on PC and symbian on Mobiles. So, when I saw WIndows Phone 7, the environment attracted me so I asked...

Okay...

1) Techically it can be done using techniques called virtualization or emulation. And only by someone who have access to Windows Phone 7 code so they could put it there.

2) Only a handful of people would do it if they could, and only to prove a point. Once they had proven it could be done, they would put a video on youtube and then abandon it.

3) The handful of people who could have done it if they wanted to, probably no longer feel a need to prove how excellent Maemo is, because they're expecting Meego. Meego is a new/merged operating system that Nokia will be using instead of what we know as Maemo. It is in part based on Maemo.

Edit: I just realized I failed to use simpler words.

Re: Windows Phone 7 on N900??

Thats right, but it wouldn't have to really be emulated, it really depends on the hardware sets that win 7 mo is released to, i mean some guy got android running and i don't think that was emulated,

Re: Windows Phone 7 on N900??

You forgot Win7 "features." (As MS see them)

Can't run anything of SQL (databases) which also limit functionality
App's can't communicate with eachother.
Walled garden affair, like the iphone, so you can't mod and develop freely.
And silverlight isn't supported. (There version of flash)

Check these for the "what is missing from Win7"

Only a complete fool would buy something as locked down as this, but the world is full of fools. I mean I bought the N900.

but the difference is, that android is mostly open source. windows phone 7 not.

That was funny, but do you mean only 3 hardware buttons? Because I'm not sure Microsoft specified a maximum. Besides, my n900 has 44 hardware buttons, 4 of which are on the outside. And not that it matters, but it also has 2 sliding switches.

But Win Mobile 7 on the n900 would mean the end of times.

Read this, which is an interview with some MS bigwig on win7 phone OS.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03...ils/page2.html

Read the second page.

Most notably these comments.
"That said, it seems there will be an exception. Kindel says that Microsoft is working with Adobe to bring the Flash runtime to Windows Phone 7, though it will not be ready "in this release," even though it is a native coded piece. I asked whether other runtimes such as Java might be supported? Kindel says it is unlikely."

And

"Which version of the .NET Framework is supported on Windows Phone 7? Kindel says it is a super-set of what Silverlight 3.0 provides, but does not include everything in Silverlight 4.0. He adds that although there are currently two distinct development platforms, Silverlight for general applications or XNA for games, Microsoft intends to bring them closer together in future."

So in the first release you don't get flash and the Silverlight you get ain't the version most people will be using.

Then reading further into the links, MS are splitting XNA for games and Silverlight for apps, with a view to merging later on, so the very future of silverlight is a bit shady.

This
"When building apps for Windows Phone 7, developers can choose between Silverlight, intended for general applications, or XNA, a .NET game development framework."

Is here.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03...ndows_phone_7/

So as a developer of apps for a win7 phone, what would you do? Learn one program language with bits removed - Silverlight, another XNA? To do a game and an app you need to learn both, which some might find easy, but most amateurs won't.

OR stuff it and do Apple and Android stuff.

The whole win7 interview is a list of things "not for this release."

Re: Windows Phone 7 on N900??

I'm PRETTY sure that one day a coder will be able to install it on an N900. i mean for gods sake, we installed windows xp, mac osx and some Linux platforms on n900. o yea and android is on n900 :)
It's just a matter of someone getting off his/her *** and start working on it.. i would, but i dunno how :P maybe someday ;)

So yea, i think that there will be something like windows 7 phone on N900.

Well, you can almost always tell how good their future'll be by looking at their track record. In this case, M$ has a track record of dictating the hardware specs from smart phones to netbooks. So much so that M$ dictates the specs to its own demise! Just look at sales of netbook and it's own 'Kin' phone platform.

And why have I purchased n900? Answer is - to do away from M$ for good! No M$ whatever for me. I have being looking for ways even to get the community-driven Debian onto my N900. I have used Debian for my desktop and notebook for years and no problems whatsoever, zero concern with virus, no corrupted filesystem nor reformating every year or so. One word - happy life without M$ trouble!

So you like WP7, go ahead and 'enjoy' it.
